From “Almost Persuaded” to “Ready to Receive” Jesus as Lord - March 21, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, March 21 - From “Almost Persuaded” to “Ready to Receive” Jesus as Lord   Good morning, Lord Jesus. First things first; and the first thing I want to do today is speak out Your name and listen for Your voice (John 10:27). ...   This weekend I had an opportunity to share my heart and the Word of God with a group of men around the campfire out a ranch each night. There’s something powerful about getting away from our everyday world and getting out into wide open spaces under wide open skies that seems to open up our hearts and open up Your heavens.   I had the honor and blessing of coming alongside several men for personal times away from everyone else to talk and to pray more deeply, more personally. One was wrestling with the invitation to open his heart and surrender his life to Jesus as Lord and Savior, saying at first, “I’m not ready.” But in the mercy of Your love and the power of Your love to heal a wounded heart, You revealed Yourself in a way that made him ready to receive Jesus as Lord--ready to experience that life-changing moment that all of heaven loves to celebrate. Praise God!   In reflecting this morning--back now in the flow of my everyday world--I’m remembering the story about a man Paul was speaking to who was almost persuaded, but not quite ready, to turn over his heart to You in surrender and trust named King Agrippa:   “Agrippa said to Paul, ‘Are you so quickly persuading me to become a Christian?’ Paul replied, ‘Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that not only you but also all who are listening to me today might become such as I am--except for these chains’” (Acts 26:28-29).   Thank You for saving me. And thank You for giving me the heart and the opportunities to seek to persuade those who are listening to turn over their hearts to You. You’re really the One who does the persuading and the leading, just as You’re really the One who reveals Your mercy and love, along with Your healing and freeing power that breaks the chains of doubt and unbelief, fear and false pride, confusion and hesitation, so we can freely trust the One who sets us free from trying so hard to live our lives in our own power, our own way, apart from You.   Whether quickly or not, we can all come to the place of being fully persuaded to open our heart and take a step of trust because Your Holy Spirit has made our heart ready. And then, “There is rejoicing in the presence of the angles of God over one sinner who repents!” (Luke 15:10) “Count on it--that’s the kind of party God’s angels throw every time one lost soul turns to God!” (The Message Version). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “For Just Such a Time as This” - Remembering the Days of Purim - March 17, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, March 17 - “For Just Such a Time as This” - Remembering the Days of Purim   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Open the eyes of my heart to see You--here in my heart right now and with me throughout every moment of my day (Ephesians 1:18), for You are with me always (Matthew 28:20). ...   These are the “days of Purim” on the Biblical calendar, to “be remembered and kept throughout every generation,” as they continue to be celebrated by the Jewish people around the world every year. Last night and today, the Biblical Book of Esther is read aloud in Jewish gatherings to remember the story of Esther, Queen of Persia, a hidden Jew who exposed the plot of a governmental leader named Haman to destroy the Jewish people through an evil attack of genocide.   “These days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, in every family, province, and city; and these days of Purim should never fall into disuse among the Jews, nor should the commemoration of these days cease among their descendants” (Esther 9:28).   This is the story where Mordecai, Esther’s adopted father, tells her of Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews, and speaks these famous words:   “Do not think that in the king’s palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silence at such a time as this, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another quarter, but you and your father’s family will perish. Who knows? Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for just such a time as this” (Esther 4:13-14).   Esther replied with courage and commitment to speak up for her people, to go before the king in his inner court of governmental authority, even though she had not been summoned as was required under penalty of death under the law of the land, saying:   “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will also fast as you do. After that I will go to the king, though it is against the law; and if I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16).   As the Biblical story unfolds, she did not perish but rather prevailed. Wicked Haman’s plot was exposed and turned against him. He was hung on the very gallows he had built to hang Mordecai (Esther 7:10). The very place of governmental authority that Haman held was given over to Mordecai (Esther 8:2). And the very day Haman had planned to destroy the Jews on a national day of genocide was turned into a day of great victory and redemption for the Jewish people in that land (Esther 9:1).   What a story--a story of true events forever sealed in history and celebrated to this day--of how You turn the tables on the devil, how good triumphs over evil when courageous people bow in prayer and then speak up in faith, and how You take what was intended for evil and use it for good (Genesis 50:20). “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).   That’s what You did at the cross. What Satan intended for evil, You used for good and for Your eternal plan of redemption to the turn the tables on the devil and his plot of destruction. “None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Corinthians 2:8).   And that’s what You do in us and in every heart that will turn to You in faith. With Your faith in our heart, You move us with humility to bow in prayer and You move us with courage to speak up in faith for what is right and true. We get to see the promise and truth of Your Word come to pass again and again:   “Little children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).    In that way, in what You do, we begin to realize and embrace our identity and our calling in our day, just like Esther did, that we were chosen and created by our God to be here in our world at this time “for just such as time as this” (Esther 4:14). Living Examples of Courage and Confidence - March 16, 2022

Morning by Morning, March 16 - Living Examples of Courage and Confidence   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Rule and reign as King of kings and Lord of lords, here in my heart and here in my life, this day and every day. ...   In these days where we desperately need courage to stand our ground in the confidence that never surrenders and never retreats, in these days where we can feel so outnumbered and overwhelmed by forces beyond our control, You call us to come to You. You bring us into Your Presence to ground us in Your Word and fill us with Your Spirit.   This morning the Congress of our nation will hear from the leader of Ukraine. And no matter what is going on the war with Russia, no matter what is true or false in all the underlying stories and substories of the conflict, all the world sees a great measure of courage in this man as he seeks to lead his people through this horrendous time.   It strikes me that he sounds a lot like Winston Churchill and acts a lot like one of David’s mighty men of valor, whose stories are now inscribed on the pages of Scripture forever:   “These are the names of the warriors whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of The Three; he wielded his spear against eight hundred whom he killed at one time.   Next to him among the three warriors was Eleazar son of Dodo son of Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle. The Israelites withdrew, but he stood his ground. He struck down the Philistines until his arm grew weary, though his hand clung to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. Then the people came back to him--but only to strip the dead.   Next to him was Shammah son of Agee, the Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi, where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the army fled from the Philistines. But he took his stand in the middle of the plot, defended it, and killed the Philistines; and the Lord brought about a great victory” (2 Samuel 23:8-12).   These three were courageous men, secure in their covenant with You. When others fled, they took their stand. When others panicked, they stood in faith.   In their day, in the battles they faced in the world they knew, they were inspired in faith and empowered with courage as they looked to their leader, King David. And in our day, in our battles we face in the world we know, we look to our Leader, King Jesus, Son of David, Son of God.   We look to You and call on Your name, the name above all names (Philippians 2:9). We can stand in You as You stand in us; and all must bow to the authority of Your name (v.10).   In You, we can stand firm in the courage and confidence You supply, never to surrender, never to retreat. In You, we can “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of (Your) power” (Ephesians 6:10). In You, we are “able to withstand on (every) evil day (we endure), and having done everything, to stand firm (Ephesians 6:13).   May You move by Your Holy Spirit to stir in hearts to look to You through every conflict we endure through these evil days--whether in Ukraine or Russia, whether here in our own hearts at home or to the ends of the earth. You are our Leader. And there is no true courage or confidence that carries any eternal significance apart from You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Communion with God, Not Conformity to the World - March 15, 2022

Morning by Morning, March 15 - Communion with God, Not Conformity to the World   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Heart to heart, spirit to Spirit, deep to Deep, I turn to You and wait for Your leading to begin my day in communion with You--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. For “anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him (and) “(our) body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within (us), which (we) have from God” (1 Corinthians 6:17-19). ...   Yes, Lord. There’s a communion with You that keeps me from being “conformed to the world” (Romans 12:2). I’m in this world, but not of this world. As You said to our Father before You went to the cross, to be raised from the dead, to overcome the grave, to ascend to heaven, and to pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us to be Your witnesses in our world in Your prayer of John Chapter 17:   “After Jesus had spoken these words, He looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son so that the Son may glorify You, since You have given Him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on earth by finishing the work that You gave Me to do. So now, Father, glorify Me in Your own presence with the glory that I had in Your presence before the world existed.   “I have made Your name known to those whom You gave Me from the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they know that everything You have given Me is from You; for the words that You gave to Me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom You gave Me, because they are Yours. All Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them in Your name that You have given Me, so that they may be one, as We are One” (John 17:1-11).   Yes, Lord. Make us one with You and one with each other. Heart to heart, spirit to Spirit, deep to Deep--in communion with You, not conformity to the world. Just as You continued to pray:   “I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their word, that they may all be one. As You, Father, are in Me and I am in You, may they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. The glory that You have given Me I have given them, so that they may be one, as We are One, I in them and You in Me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that You have sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me” (John 17:20-23).   Yes, Lord. This unity of communion with You has a purpose, just as You continued to pray and finished Your prayer with this eternal declaration:   “Righteous Father, the world does not know You, but I know You; and these know that You have sent Me. I made Your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:25-26).   Love is the purpose. To love and to be loved. And even to share Your love in our world, as the nature and character and essence of Your love becomes one with us. We’re in this world, but not of this world. And we’re in this world to love--not in conformity to the world, but in communion with You. And in communion with You, Your heart will be in us:   “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 NKJV). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
