“Come, Follow Me. Come, Be with Me.” - March 31, 2022

Morning by Morning, March 31 - “Come, Follow Me. Come, Be with Me.”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You still say to me and to every one of Your disciples, “Come, follow Me” (Matthew 19:21). Here I am, Lord; ready to come, follow You today. ...

I hear You saying in my heart:

“Draw near to Me, then I can send you out. Spend time with Me, and I will multiply the moments of your day. Let Me fill you up with My Spirit, so I can pour out of you My love. Allow Me to empower you, that My power can flow through you. I am the Author of your faith. I am the Source of your success. I am the Lord of your life because you have believed that I am Lord of all.” ...

Yes, Lord. This Scripture from Your written Word comes to mind to conform what I believe I’m hearing in my heart as Your spoken word:

“I love those who love Me,
and those who seek Me diligently find Me” (Proverbs 8:17).

And these familiar Words are coming to life with a fresh breath of Your Spirit right now:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in Me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit He prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in Me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in Me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from Me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in Me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become My disciples. As the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. I have said these things to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:1-11).

Simple Words. But powerful, intimate Words. Welcoming me to come and follow You, to come and spend time with You, so that my life bears fruit and my joy may be complete -- all because of a genuine, authentic, and deeply personal relationship with You.

By the power of Your grace, with this hunger You’ve put in my heart, I’m here to come follow You, to come be with You -- this day and every day, this moment and every moment -- morning by morning and step by step. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

The Wrong Way to Defend the One We Love - March 30, 2022

Morning by Morning, March 30 - The Wrong Way to Defend the One We Love

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I look and listen, as I watch and wait for the leading of Your Spirit this morning. ...

Recent events, where an actor slapped a comedian on live television for insulting his wife, lead me to ponder what might be my actions and reactions in a moment like that. There’s room to defend the ones we love, there are ways to stand up and speak out for what is right, but the way we do it makes all the difference.

A story comes to mind when Simon Peter acted to defend the One he loved in the Garden of Gethsemane:

“After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with His disciples. So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to Him, came forward and asked them, ‘Whom are you looking for?’ They answered, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ Jesus replied, ‘I am He.’ Judas, who betrayed Him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, ‘I am He,’ they stepped back and fell to the ground. Again He asked them, ‘Whom are you looking for?’ And they said, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ Jesus answered, ‘I told you that I am He. So if you are looking for Me, let these men go.’ This was to fulfill the word that He had spoken, ‘I did not lose a single one of those whom You gave Me.” Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus. Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given Me?’” (John 18:1-11).

Simon Peter was hurt and angry by what was happening to the One he loved. And he acted out with his hands what was rising up in his heart. But striking the man’s face with his sword wasn’t the way You had in mind for Your disciple to respond. You basically told him, “Not that way. The better way is to obey the will of God, no matter the cost.”

From Matthew’s account, You told Simon Peter, “Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once send Me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way?” (Matthew 26:52-54).

In the confrontations of life, You call us to look to You as our example and to depend upon You as our Source of guidance and wisdom, courage and strength, humility and patience. And if we’re to respond well in the moment, we need to be abiding in You and You abiding in us by Your Spirit already (John 15:4).

We need to be in the place already where we’re listening for Your leading. “And when (we) turn to the right or when (we) turn to the left, (our) ears shall hear a word behind (us), saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21). “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” (Romans 8:14).

One of Your Words of Scripture that always helps me live out the balance of what to do and how to do it comes from the Prophet Micah:

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8 NKJV).

The only way we know when it’s time to “do justly” or when it’s time to “love mercy,” to know when it’s time to stand up and speak out or time to step back or take a knee, is to “walk humbly with (our) God.” In humility, we let You put Your thoughts in our mind, Your desires in our heart, Your words in our mouth, so that our ways reflect Your ways and our actions are not just reactions to the world but witnesses of the One who sends us into the world and abides within us in our hearts.

So keep me connected with You, Lord. For apart from You, I can do nothing (John 15:5). And in the words of the ancient proverb, “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be constantly connected with the Lord, abiding in Him as He abides in you by His Spirit, so you can respond well in the confrontations of your life, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

“That the World May Know” by God’s Love in Us - March 29, 2022

Morning by Morning, March 29 - “That the World May Know” by God’s Love in Us

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are One with the Father and One with the Holy Spirit; and in the mystery of faith and the mercy of grace, You desire to be One within me and within all who call on Your name. ...

“I in them and You in Me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that You have sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me” (John 17:23).

How great our Father’s love for us--the love of God You made known to us through Your life, death, and resurrection. “God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10).

When we embrace Your love--the love of God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, abiding as One within us--then “the world may know” that we have a Savior, sent from the God who loves us and lays His life down for us that we may live with Him forever.

Your love is for all, “not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16).

But we all have the freedom to love You or not, to receive Your love or not. We all have the freedom to trust You and trust Your will and Your heart for our lives or not. And part of Your plan is to display Your love through us, through Christ in us, abiding in us, loving in us, loving through us. “So that the world may know” You love them (John 17:23).

So to all who call on Your name, to all who have received Your love in our hearts by Your grace, You say, “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God” (1 John 4:7). “Little children, let us love, not (merely) in world or speech, but in truth and action (1 John 3:18). This is the commandment “we have had from the beginning, let us love one another” (2 John 1:5).

As You said to Your first disciples long ago, You continue to speak to Your disciples today, “By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

Yes, Lord. Make me one with Your heart today; make me one with Your love today. “That the world may know.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with the Love of God through Jesus Christ abiding in you and you in Him, so that the world may know the Love of God flowing through you today, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

“Never More, Forever More” - March 28, 2022

Morning by Morning, March 28, 2022 - “Never More, Forever More”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your leading, as I seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ...

Right now, I’m hearing in my heart:

“Never more, forever more.” ...

“Never more, will I remember your sins. Forever more, they are cast away from you, as far as the east is from the west. It’s not that I literally forget them, for all things and all time is forever present before Me. But that I mercifully no longer hold them against you. You are forgiven and free by My mercy and love, forever cleansed by the blood of My Son.”

Yes, Lord. Your Word comes to mind from Isaiah:

“I, I am He
who blots out your transgressions for My own sake,
and I will not remember your sins” (Isaiah 43:25).

And Your Word from Jeremiah:

“No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more” (Jeremiah 31:34).

And of course, Your famous Word of forgiveness and freedom, mercy and love from Psalm 103:

“The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always accuse,
nor will He keep His anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
    so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far He removes our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion for his children,
so the Lord has compassion for those who fear Him.
For He knows how we were made;
He remembers that we are dust” (Psalm 103:8-14).

In Your mercy and love, You don’t “forget” our sins as if you get some kind of spiritual amnesia about every sinful moment of our lives. In fact, the forgiveness of our sins is one of the most powerful points of our testimony. And the freedom from the guilt and shame and regret of our past failures, now replaced with the peace and joy that only the forgiveness of God can truly provide, is one of the most practical, personal evidences of the victory of the cross and the power of the resurrection.

You “forget” our sins and “no longer remember” our sins in the sense that You choose to no longer hold them against us, and that You choose to keep no record of our wrongs between us.

“Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity
    and passing over the transgression
of the remnant of Your possession?
He does not retain His anger forever,
because He delights in showing clemency.
He will again have compassion upon us;
He will tread our iniquities under foot.
You will cast all our sins
into the depths of the sea.
You will show faithfulness to Jacob
    and unswerving loyalty to Abraham,
as You have sworn to our ancestors
from the days of old” (Micah 7:18-20).

As someone has said, “You cast our sins into the depths of the sea and then put up a sign that says, ‘No Fishing!’”

Yes, Lord. That’s what You’ve done for us!

By Your mercy and grace, through the sacrifice of Your love, all who receive the forgiveness of our sins through the blood Jesus are forever more “giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled (us) to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins.... For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him God was pleased to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:11-20).

This is the “never more” that I celebrate today and “forever more” in You! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you know the peace and joy that you are forgiven and free by the mercy and love of our God, never more with sin separating you from God and forever more celebrating His grace for you, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!
