Courage to Confront the Invasion - February 28, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, February 28 - Courage to Confront the Invasion Good morning, Lord Jesus. Grounded in Your Word, filled with Your Spirit, I trust in You as my Lord and Savior--here at the beginning and throughout the moments of my day. ... In these days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there’s a spirit of courage stirring up in the hearts of the leaders and people of Ukraine for all the world to see. Fill them with the courage of Your Spirit, Lord. Make them “strong and very courageous” in You, Lord (Joshua 1:7). I’m reminded of a time when the small nation of Judah was invaded by the much larger nation of Assyria. Not only did the army of Judah take a stand against the onslaught, but so did the people of Judah, in the courage of their God: “After these things and these acts of faithfulness, King Sennacherib of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself. When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem, he planned with his officers and his warriors to stop the flow of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him. A great many people were gathered, and they stopped all the springs and the wadi that flowed through the land, saying, ‘Why should the Assyrian kings come and find water in abundance? Hezekiah set to work resolutely and built up the entire wall that was broken down, and raised towers on it, and outside it he built another wall; he also strengthened the Millo in the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance. He appointed combat commanders over the people, and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying, ‘Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him; for there is One greater with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.’ The people were encouraged by the words of King Hezekiah of Judah” (2 Chronicles 32:1-8). May the leaders and people of Ukraine turn to You, that You may help them and fight their battles. May they know the One who is greater. And may the people of Russia be stirred with courage to take a stand against ungodly leaders and illegal orders that would target civilian populations being forced to take up arms in their streets and city squares to repel all the horde coming against them. Come, Holy Spirit. Bring good out of this evil. Turn fear into faith. Transform human courage into godly confidence in the only One who can truly save us and “help us and to fight our battles.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Overcoming the Tribulation of Our World - February 25, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, February 25 - Overcoming the Tribulation of Our World Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of all I am, all I have, all I’ll encounter today. ... “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NKJV). How we need You peace in our world, Lord Jesus. In this world, we have tribulation; we have wars; we have wickedness and evil and the consequences of the choices made by the will of men rebelling against the will of God. Death came into this world through sin (Romans 5:12). And death continues to come into this world through sin. But You are greater than sin, and You are greater than death (Romans 5:15). You are greater than whatever tribulation we face in this world when we turn our face to You, because You have overcome the world. It's only by Your grace that we can “have peace,” that we can “be of good cheer” in the midst of all that’s going on, even as it breaks our heart and Yours to see the consequences of evil choices from sinful hearts in our world. Your life overcomes death (John 10:10). And Your love overcomes all (1 Corinthians 13:8). So as we put our lives in Your hands, as we trust in the grace of Your love, You’ll give us the wisdom and courage and faith we need to overcome (James 1:5). You’ll even use the challenges we endure and the tribulation we overcome to make us more like You, as we keep turning to You and trusting in You.  In this way--and only in this way--“whenever (we) face trials of any kind, (we can) consider it nothing but joy, because (we) know that the testing of (our) faith produces endurance; and (we can) let endurance have its full effect, so that (we) may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4).  The joy is not from the tribulation of evil choices or the inevitable consequences of sinful acts of sinful man in rebellion against the will of God. No, the joy is in knowing evil will not have the last word, wickedness will not have the final say; and as we overcome by the power of Your grace at work within us, “we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37 NKJV). “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).  “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:3-5 NKJV). As we keep turning to You, trusting in You, we will keep overcoming the evil and tribulation of our days in this world, for You have already overcome our world. And You’ve already made the way to even use it all to make us more like You through it all (Romans 8:29). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Nation Against Nation, Kingdom Against Kingdom - February 24, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, February 24 - Nation Against Nation, Kingdom Against Kingdom Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I begin my day, I seek first Your kingdom and Your Presence -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “When (Jesus) was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah!’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth pangs. ... But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this Good News of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and then the end will come’” (Matthew 24:3-14). Even as we see these signs around us -- nation against nation, kingdom against kingdom, wars and rumors of wars -- at the same time, we see Your Presence within us. For the kingdoms of this world are shaken, but ours is “a kingdom that cannot be shaken” (Hebrews 12:28). “Now He has promised, ‘Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven.’ This phrase, ‘Yet once more,’ indicates the removal of what is shaken--that is, created things--so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:26-29). The kingdom that cannot be shaken is a kingdom that abides within us as we abide in You (John 15:4-7). The kingdom that cannot be shaken is the kingdom of God within us (Luke 17:21 KJV). “For the kingdom of God is ... righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). Come, Holy Spirit. Steady our hearts. Even as nation turns against nation and kingdom turns against kingdom, even as the forces of this world seek to realign the world in their image according to their vision, You are aligning us with You, according to Your image and according to Your vision. Because we are in Christ and Christ is in us, our kingdom shall not pass away (Luke 1:33). “To (You) was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve (You). (Your) dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and (Your) kingship is one that shall never be destroyed” (Daniel 7:14). Yes, these are days are struggle and darkness, of famine and sword, but at the same time, these are days of Your Presence and Your glory arising and shining in us--giving us courage and faith to endure to the end, as the prophetic Promises of Your Word declared long ago: “Arise, shine; for your light has come,     and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth,     and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you,     and His glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light,     and kings to the brightness of your dawn” (Isaiah 60:1-3). As we endure and overcome these days, we look forward to the day of the full consummation of Your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven and the fulfillment of this Word: “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Positioned for the Presence of God - February 23, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, February 23 - Positioned for the Presence of God Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind, Your desires in my heart, Your words in my mouth, as I seek to walk in Your steps by the power of Your grace working in me today (1 Peter 2:21). ... “Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ and he said, ‘Here I am!’ and ran to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call; lie down again.’ So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, ‘Samuel!’ Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call, my son; lie down again.’ Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, ‘Go, lie down; and if He calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for Your servant is listening.’ (1 Samuel 3:1-10). When Samuel heard You calling his name, he was positioned for Your Presence. The high priest Eli “was lying down in his room,” but Samuel “was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.” And it was Samuel who heard You calling in the night. Because he heard You calling in the night, he was able to respond with his heart, “Here I am, Lord.” He was able to respond with his voice, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” As in the days of Samuel, the word of the Lord may be rare for those who are not listening and visions may not be widespread for those who are not looking. But Your word is near for those are listening and Your visions are clear for those who are looking. So You invite us to listen and look, to watch and wait, as we position ourselves for Your Presence, as we embrace the Promise of Your Word, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to You” (James 4:8). Lord, I’m drawing near. In these first moments of my morning and throughout the moments of my day, I want to be positioned for Your Presence. I want to hear what You’re saying and see what You’re doing. I want to sense Your leading so I can walk in Your ways as I follow in Your steps. “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” (Romans 8:14). For Your sheep hear Your voice; You know them and they know You and follow You (John 10:27). With my heart in worship, I say, “Here I am, Lord.” With my voice in prayer, I say, “Speak Lord, for Your servant is listening.” With my spirit that hungers and thirsts for more of You, I draw near to You and I position myself for Your Presence and take hold of Your Promise, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
