“Every Single Moment We Have on Earth is a Gift of God ... Only by the Grace of God” - July 19, 2024

Morning by Morning, July 19 - “Every Single Moment We Have on Earth is a Gift of God ... Only by the Grace of God”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. “King of Kings and Lord of Lords,” come rule and reign in my heart, my life, my community, my nation, and throughout the Earth today and every day to come (Revelation 19:16). ...

As I wait for Your leading this morning, I’m reminded of the honor and praise given to You last night from the world-wide platform of a man running for President of the United States of America. So many of the words I heard spoken were filled with honest gratitude and humble awareness of Your Presence and protection in his life. Though my wife jokingly made fun of my manhood, I was moved to tears in many moments of the evening, as I found my heart filled with hope that’s grounded in You.

Words like this:

“Every single moment we have on Earth is a gift from God.”

“I stand before you only because of the grace of Almighty God.”

As Rev. Franklin Graham observed, “President Trump had a near death experience, no question.... When we go through those experiences, it changes us.”

Regardless of politics or political leanings, You’re calling us all to lean on You and not our own understanding or wisdom or protection in these challenging days. As Your Word demands:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

And lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

We must make every moment count, with the little time we have, in the opportunities we’ve been granted. We must “Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold of eternal life, to which (we) were also called....” (1 Timothy 6:12). “Whatever (we) do, (we are to) do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Throughout our land, there’s a stirring of hope that begins with this humility of heart. There’s a stirring of faith that follows a passion to fight for what is right through the power and provision, the wisdom and understanding, the protection and guidance, that only You alone can provide. It’s “only by the grace of God” because as You said long ago, “He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Praise God, we are not without You. You are with us. And I’m moved with the hope and faith to believe that You are stretching out Your hand over us as “one nation under God” again. That’s my prayer and that’s my hope. As I also heard last night, “I’m not telling anybody what to do; I’m just telling what I know.” For me, I’m just expressing the faith and hope that I have.

“Now may the God of hope fill (us) with all joy and peace in believing, that (we) may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today. In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Friendship of God through Obedience of God by the Grace of God - July 18, 2024

Morning by Morning, July 18 - Friendship of God through Obedience of God by the Grace of God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I watch and wait for Your leading--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...

“The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear Him, He makes His covenant known to them” (Psalm 25:14).

O Lord, my God, You’re my heavenly Father and Creator, my Lord and Savior, my Advocate and Comforter. And You also desire to be my Friend, just as You desire that from every one of Your children. But in Your Words, Your friendship requires my faithfulness. Your friendship is reserved for those who fear Your name, who yield to Your Word, who humble themselves to honor Your ways. This level of intimacy is reserved for those who willing trust You with all their hearts and deliberately seek to obey You with all their lives. It’s all by Your grace, but it requires our desire and determination (John 15:5).

Some think and even teach that’s just “an Old Testament thing,” only required by “the God of the Old Testament.” Some think grace does not expect obedience. Some think friendship does not require faithfulness. But Your Word teaches differently. As You said directly in the “red letter words” of Your New Testament, “You are My friends if you do what I command you” (John 15:14).

Though You are always my Lord and Savior, I also want You to always be my best Friend. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart. Let my words and my actions be an expression of my honor, reverence, and respect of You and Your Word and Your ways in my heart. Help me want to hear and obey Your voice and Your will.

“He who has the bride is the Bridegroom. The friend of the Bridegroom, who stands and hears Him, rejoices greatly at the Bridegroom’s voice. For this reason, my joy has been fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:29-30). With all my heart that’s been changed and moved by the power of Your grace at work within me, I want to be a friend of God, a friend of the Bridegroom, a friend of Yours in both love and obedience. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today. In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you draw near to God in the friendship of God through obedience to God by the grace of God, in Jesus' name. Amen. God bless you, my friend! And you have a great day!

“Grace Under Fire” - July 17, 2024

Morning by Morning, July 17 - “Grace Under Fire”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Arise in my heart and speak through my life today, as we each do our part as our part of the body of Christ each day (1 Corinthians 12:27). ...

As I wait for Your leading, what comes to my heart are these words: “Grace under fire.” ...

What comes out of us in times of pressure, in the unexpected moments, in the extraordinary encounters--our words, our actions, our reactions--reveal much of what’s in our hearts and what’s been formed in our character. And these are the times to display the grace of God in our lives--whether by our deliberate choices in the moment or by the reflexive choices that are displayed from what’s already been established inside of us through our former deliberate choices. For all our choices, whether deliberate or not, are on display for the world to see.

You said it this way:

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

Help me make right choices today, by the power of Your grace at work within me. Help me have Your truth settled in my heart, Your character formed in my nature, that in the moments of surprise, in the moments that are far out of my control, the light You’ve formed in me will shine before men and my Father in heaven may be glorified in me. I pray the same for every one of Your sons and daughters of God.

May we each display “grace under fire” in whatever encounters we face. We may not all take a bullet to side of our face, but we all face the bullets of words, the persecution of faith, the taunting of our values in various forms and to varying degrees throughout the battles of our lives. So prepare our hearts now, develop our character now, that we may glorify You on that day of our challenge to display Your grace under fire.

As Your Word encourages us through the witness of those who have gone before us in the past, just as we’re inspired by the witness of those who live by grace before us today:

“In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith--the salvation of your souls” (1 Peter 1:6-9).

Through the “various trials” I may ever endure, I embrace Your grace now to develop “the genuineness of (my) faith” so that whenever I’m “tested by fire” I may display Your “grace under fire” coming out of me to the “praise, honor, and glory” of Your name. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today. In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Tommy, may you be empowered by the grace of God developing His character in you to let His Light so shine through you with grace under fire in whatever challenges you endure, in Jesus' name. Amen. God bless you, my friend! And you have a great day!

“David Strengthened Himself in the Lord His God” - July 11, 2024

Morning by Morning, July 11 - “David Strengthened Himself in the Lord His God”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me begin my day grounded in Your Word and filled with Your Spirit. ...

As I wait for Your leading this morning, I’m mindful of so many who have been reaching out for prayer in desperate circumstances--battling doubts, wracked with questions, even struggling in faith. And I’ve been led to share with them a story from one of the darkest times of King David’s life. Not when he sinned with Bathsheba, but when we was almost stoned to death by his own people, surrounded by such grief and sorrow of losing all they had with no hope in sight:

“So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep. And David’s two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive. Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God” (1 Samuel 30:3-6).

That’s the key to the turnaround: “But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God” (v. 6).

“David inquired of the Lord” (v. 8). He sought You. He pursued You. He pressed into You as deeply as he could, trusting in You no matter what was to come. In deep humility, he willingly chose to be desperately dependent upon You alone. Not on what the people around him were saying and doing or failing to say or failing to do. He turned to You. He inquired of You. He strengthened himself in You.

And You told him to get up out of his grief and “pursue” his enemies. As David asked, You answered. You said, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all” (v. 8).

So he did. Some went with him and some did not (v. 10). But he listened for strategy. And You turned things around in his favor from places and people he didn’t expect along the way (v. 11-15). You gave him a strategy and supernatural strength to overcome his enemies and take back all that was stolen from him and him people (v. 16-17).

“So David recovered all.... And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all” (v. 18-19).

Today, in our everyday lives, our true enemies are not human flesh and blood, but the spiritual forces of wickedness coming against us, whether using the sin and flesh of human beings or not in the process:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:12).

You are “the whole armor of God.” You’re our Helmet of Salvation, our Breastplate of Righteousness, our Belt of Truth, our Shoes of Peace, our Sword of the Spirit, our Shield of Faith” (Ephesians 6:14-17). You’re the One who moves us to be “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,” persisting in “perseverance” through the battles, no matter how intense (v. 18).

That’s how we strengthen ourselves in the Lord. That’s how we keep getting up to pursue You and pursue our spiritual enemies with Your strategies, desperately dependent upon the power of Your grace, until we take all what stolen from us.

So give us grace to keep strengthening ourselves in the Lord--not just at the times of grief and doubt, not just at the times of battle or what feels like defeat in the moment or the season, but every moment of every day. Help us keep in communion with You--in worship, in prayer, grounded in Your Word every day, filled with Your Spirit every day (Ephesians 5:18).

Our spiritual enemies, ever-present in every spiritual battle, are not going away any time soon, but neither are You! You’re with us “always” (Matthew 28:20). You’re never leaving us or forsaking us (Hebrews 13:5). You’re right here with us to empower us to overcome, no matter what comes against us (Isaiah 43:2). You’re fighting for us in ways we don’t always know, with us in ways we don’t always feel, shaping us into Your character and developing us into Your nature in ways we’re not always aware.

“We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed--always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body” (2 Corinthians 4:7-10).

“And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:3-5).

In that way, even what was intended for evil or for our harm, You can turn around for good in Your way and in Your time (Genesis 50:20; Romans 8:28). In ways we can never prevail in our own power or wisdom, You give us the grace to learn what it means in in the Promise of Your Word:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

And lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways acknowledge Him,

And He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Give us that perspective that gets us through the battles. Give us that Spirit that keeps us lifting our eyes and hearts to You--humbly, desperately depending on You alone--as we strengthen ourselves in the Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today. In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be strengthened in the Lord our God every day, ready for every battle that comes, and ready to recover all the enemy has taken, in Jesus' name. Amen. God bless you, my friend! And you have a great day!
