“In Everything Give Thanks” - November 23, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 23 - “In Everything Give Thanks”   Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift up my heart and listen up for Your voice to go where You lead in my morning prayer and every moment of my day (John 10:3). ...   “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NASB).   The will of God for me is not “everything” I go through. The will of God for me is that I “give thanks” in everything I go through.   Not everything that happens in this broken and fallen world is the will of God. Evil is never the will of God, but evil happens in this world. Sin is never the will of God, but sin happens in this world.   So even though there is evil, even though there is sin, even though there are so many things that I will go through to endure and overcome on my journey through this world in this little sliver of time that I have, You give me the power of Your grace to go through it all with thanksgiving in my heart. Not thanksgiving for the evil and the sin, not thanksgiving for the things that break Your heart and mine, but thanksgiving that You are with me, that You are for me, that You will even cause all these things to “work together for good” (Romans 8:28) and that “in all these things” I am “more than a conqueror through Him who loved (me)” and that none of these things “will be able to separate (me) from the love of God in Christ Jesus (my) Lord” (Romans 8:37-39).   That’s what I’m thankful for. That’s what fills my heart with thanksgiving in all things. That’s how I can live into the invitation of Your Word to “Rejoice in the Lord always,” to “be anxious for nothing,” because “the Lord is at hand,” filling me with “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,” which “will guard (my) heart and (my) mind in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:4-7).   That’s why Thanksgiving is more than a holiday. It’s even more than a holy day. Thanksgiving is an attitude of the heart, a perspective of life, that I can choose to embrace by Your grace every day.   And so I do. Lord, I thank You. “In everything (I) give thanks.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Morning by Morning, November 22 - Preparing the Messengers to Proclaim the Message   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Seeking to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit, I settle in to my prayer chair for my morning time with You. ...   “Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of His coming, and who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.   “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear Me, says the Lord of hosts.   “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts” (Malachi 3:1-7).   Lord, You’re calling Your messengers. You’re preparing Your messengers who will prepare the way of the Lord.   Your Holy Spirit is refining hearts and purifying souls -- first in the hearts of Your messengers so that they can boldly proclaim Your Message. And You are the Message.   You say, “Return to Me” (v. 6). You don’t say, “Return to a teaching. Return to time that was better. Return to an institution or a government or to a place where it appeared everything was fine and everyone was free and every house was full.” No, You say, “Return to Me.” You say, “Return to Me, and I will return to you.”   In a place and time -- here in our hearts, here in our nation, here in our world -- where we are being drawn away, farther and farther from You, You’re preparing Your messengers to proclaim Your Message to return to You.   In the place and time of the days of Isaiah, You took a coal from the burning fire of the altar of Heaven to touch his lips, to refine his heart, to purify his soul, to be a voice for You and Your Message in his generation. You asked from the heart of all the fullness of God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” (Isaiah 6:8). And Your messenger responded from all the fullness of his heart, fully surrendered to You, “Here I am. Send me” (v. 8).   I join with the hearts of every messenger You’re calling and preparing to prepare the way of the Lord in this place and time of our generation. I turn to You. I return to You. As best as I can and all by Your grace, I embrace Your refining of my heart and cleansing of my soul, ready to proclaim Your Message, ready to proclaim You, for You are the Message. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! True Children of God Hear and Obey the Word of God - November 21, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, November 21 - True Children of God Hear and Obey the Word of God   Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I begin my day, I seek to hear Your heart and wait for the leading of Your Spirit. “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” (Romans 8:14). ...   When You walked this earth as the Son of God to reveal the will and the ways and the words of God the Father to us by the Spirit of God abiding in You, You boldly confronted those who falsely claimed to represent the character and authority of God. They pointed to their traditions and authority and religious heritage. You pointed to God and to the words of God, declaring “Whoever is of God hears the words of God” (John 8:47).   You confronted their hypocrisy and confusion, standing firm in Your convictions, telling them to their face who was the Source of Your authority and exposing who was the source of theirs:   “I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” They answered Him, ‘Abraham is our father.’ Jesus said to them, ‘If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are doing the works your father did.’ They said to Him, ‘We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father -- even God.’ Jesus said to them,  ‘If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of My own accord, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear My word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God’” (John 8:38-47).   I want to be one who hears the words of God. I want to be one who believes the Truth of the Word of God.   I want to grow in spiritual discernment and spiritual conviction that empowers me to be courageous to stand up and speak against what’s not true and what’s not of God. I want be bold in the face the false authorities, even cloaked in religious traditions and threatening their religious power, that deny the Truth and refuse obey the Truth, thinking they know better than the One who is “the Way and the Truth and the Life (John 14:6).   Your words “are spirit, they are life” (John 6:63). So let Your words get into my spirit. Let Your words guide my life. Let the Word of God be the standard and plumbline, the guiding principle and the determining factor, for the choices I make and the path that I walk on my journey of life. For You are the Word of God, revealing the will of God for all who would be true children of God, “full of grace and truth” (John 1:1-14). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “Draw Near” - November 18, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, November 18 - “Draw Near”   Good morning, Lord Jesus. You invite every one of us, You promise every one of us, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to You” (James 4:8). As I begin my day speaking out Your name and listening for the leading of Your Spirit, I embrace Your invitation and believe Your promise. ...   “Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,  by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain, that is, through His flesh, and since we have a great Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:19-23).   By the sacrifice and the power of Your blood, I can “have confidence to enter the holy places” of Your Presence. And only by the sacrifice and the power of Your blood, can I “draw near” to God “with a true heart in full assurance of faith.”   Because You’ve cleansed me, because You’ve washed me, I can draw near and enter into the place of spiritual intimacy with a holy God, despite all the unholy thoughts and desires and actions of my life. Forgive me for ever taking that for granted. Forgive me for every time I’ve held back and for every moment I’ve failed to enter in. Forgive me for breaking Your heart in that way after all You’ve done and sacrificed for me.   I love You, Lord. And I thank You for first loving me. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). “God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:1-2). “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Romans 5:5).   Now, not only can we come into Your holy places, You’ve made us to be Your holy places. Not only can we come and embrace Your love through “the access of faith into this grace,” but Your love actually comes to abide in us through the Spirit of Your very Presence, the Holy Spirit of the Living God who “has been given to us.”   This is Your love. This is Your grace. And this morning I take time to embrace Your Presence and Your promise, not holding back, but fully taking hold of all You’ve done and sacrificed for me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Am I “Raised with Christ” Where “Christ is (My) Life?” - November 17, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, November 17 - Am I “Raised with Christ” Where “Christ is (My) Life?”   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind, Your desires in my heart, and Your words in my mouth, as I entrust my life and my day into Your hands. I’m listening now for the leading of Your Spirit. ...   “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:1-4).   Have I been “raised with Christ?” Am I one whose “life is hidden with Christ in God?” Is Christ truly the One “who is (my) life?”  ...   Your Word speaks of those “having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised Him from the dead.... (and) made alive together with Him” (Colossians 2:12-13).   That’s what I desire. That’s the stirring in my spirit, the hunger and thirst in my heart that I would be Yours, that my life would be Yours. How do I know? ...   Your Word says it’s “through faith in the powerful working of God” (Colossians 2:12). And how do I know if I have that “faith,” if I’m living that “faith” or just blindly saying I do or just going through the motions of my life as if I do? ...   What comes to me is this, going back to the very first passage of Scripture Your brought to my heart today: “Seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:1-2).   What comes to me is that’s a way to test my heart, to test my faith. What am I seeking first? What’s the focus and the priority of what I’m setting my mind on? Is it You? Is it Your Kingdom, the Kingdom of God and the things that are above? Or is it myself and the ways of man and the kingdoms of this world?   You said, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). And that’s how I know, as I test my heart. Am I truly seeking You and Your Kingdom and Your righteousness? Is that what’s important to me? Is that the goal of my desires and my efforts? Is that the priority of my time and my focus?   What comes to me right now is that the emphasis here is “Seek.” That’s my part -- to “seek.” That’s how I “set (my) mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” And then Your part is Your fulfillment of the Promise of Your Word for all who seek You and set their minds on You to pursue You as the priority of their lives:   “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will hear you. You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 29:11-14).   You reward those who seek You. You bless and embrace those who seek You by faith with all their heart, as best as they can and all by Your grace. “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).   So, yes. I do believe that by the power of Your grace at work within me, I am seeking You, seeking to set my mind on You and on the things that are above as the priority in my life. I believe You’re helping me keep my priorities straight and my heart right, seeking first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness, as best as I can and all by Your grace.   Therefore, I believe by faith, according to testing of Your Word You’ve set before me today: I have been raised with Christ. My life is hidden with Christ. Christ is my life. Lord, let it be so. Lord, I believe it is so. And if I’m deceived or confused and it’s not so, then convict me of the truth, lead me to repentance, and make it so. Because this is my heart’s desire as I seek You with all my heart, as best as I can and all by Your grace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
