Doubt the Doubters Rather Than Jesus - April 17, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, April 17 - Doubt the Doubters Rather Than Jesus   Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I begin my day, I speak out Your name over everything I’ll face, for there’s no other name above Your name (Philippians 2:9). ...   “Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, ‘Tell them, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.’ And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will appease him and make you secure.’ So they took the money and did as they were instructed; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.   “Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.   And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen” (Matthew 28:11-18).   Matthew’s account of the days following Your resurrection doesn’t shy away from the issue of doubt. The Jewish leaders were sowing doubt and misinformation with their money. Even some of Your disciples were giving into doubt and unbelief with their skepticism.   Better to doubt the doubters than doubt Jesus. Better to overcome the skepticism than believe the misinformation.   Your Word says of Your disciples, that they say You, they worshipped You; but at the same time, “some doubted” You (v. 17).   Even among Your disciples today, we have to battle the doubt and unbelief that’s been sown into this world to deny our Savior. Even “until this day,” that same spirit of doubt and unbelief persists. Skepticism and misinformation continue to spread.   But You still come among us and still speak Your words over us. You still remind us of Your authority and Your desire for hearts and souls from every nation. And You still encourage us You are with us -- “with (us) always, even to the end of the age” -- as we go make disciples of the nations in the name of Jesus.   Deliver us from doubt and increase our faith. Free us from the skepticism and misinformation of this age and fill us with hearts that trust You and obey You, that worship You and willing “Go” for You everywhere You send us with the Good News of Your resurrection. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, April 12 - “All the Scriptures” Speak of Jesus   Good morning, Lord Jesus. I declare the power of Your name over every moment of my day (Philippians 2:10). ...   “Now on the same day two of (Jesus’ disciples) were going to a village called Emmaus.... While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself came near and went with them.... Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them the things about Himself in all the Scriptures... They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking to us on the road, while He was opening the Scriptures to us?’” (Luke 24:13-32).   “All the Scriptures” speak of You. The words of Moses. The words of the prophets. As it turns out, it’s all about You!   Holy Spirit, come like a Fire, as You burn in my heart and open my eyes to see Jesus in “all the Scriptures” ...   Lord Jesus, You’re the Point of every parable. The Hero of every Old Testament Story. The Object of Our Affection in every Psalm and every Song of Solomon. The Nugget of Wisdom in every Proverb. The Glory of God revealed and perfectly expressed as human form in every Gospel. The Author and Finisher of our Faith every Epistle of Paul and Peter and James and John and Jude. The Soon and Coming King and Ultimate Restoration of All Things in the Book of Revelation.   My Heavenly Father, in every Word of Your Scripture, let me see Jesus. Let me know Jesus. And as Jesus Himself draws near to me in every Word about Him, let my heart burn within me with Your consuming, eternal Flame of Holy Fire. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. “Rejoice!” and “Go!” - April 11, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, April 11 - “Rejoice!” and “Go!”   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Grounded in Your Word, filled with Your Spirit, I want to begin my day in communion and alignment with You. ...   “So (the women) went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word. And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, ‘Rejoice!’ So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. Go tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me!’” (Matthew 28:8-10)   When You met the women outside the empty tomb, You told them two things: “Rejoice!” and “Go!”   Fill me today with the joy of Your resurrection. Send me today to go share the Good News.   I grew up singing a song out of the Methodist Hymnal that keeps stirring in my spirit today: “Christ the Lord is risen today, Allelluia!” And we always sang it where you joyfully draw out the “Allelluia” like “Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ahlelu, u, ia!”   I’m drawn to look back now at the power and joy of the words, as written by Spirit-filled, revivalist songwriter, Charles Wesley, brother of Spirit-filled, revivalist preacher John Wesley. Here’s a few of the verses:   Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!  Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia!  Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!  Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia!    Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia!  Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!  Death in vain forbids Him rise, Alleluia!  Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia!    Yes, Lord Jesus! “Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ahlelu, u, ia!” By the power of Your grace, I’ll rejoice and go. With Your joy in my spirit, I’ll go share my joy of Your Good News everywhere You send me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Running with the Good News of Resurrection Glory - April 10, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, April 10 - Running with the Good News of Resurrection Glory   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Risen Lord, Reigning King, come rule and reign in me today. ...   “Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.   “But the angel answered and said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.   “So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word” (Matthew 28:1-8).   He is risen! He is risen indeed!   Just as You rose from the dead, You rise in our hearts to live in us. “Christ in (us), the hope glory!” (Colossians 1:27). We live in resurrection power because the same Power who raised You from the dead lives in us! “If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in (us), He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to (our) mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in (us)!” (Romans 8:11)   As I mediate on the words and the wonder of that Resurrection Morning, I’m drawn to the reaction of fear in response to the angel of the Lord by both the guards and the women. As for the guards, they were shaken by the fear of the Lord to fall like dead men. But for the women, they were shaken by the fear of the Lord to tremble with joy -- with both “fear and great joy” to run with the word of the good news of Your resurrection glory!   Reverence for Your resurrection should stir within us both the fear of the Lord and the joy of the Lord. We should be moved by fear and reverence for Your holiness and glory and power in all that You are and all You have done. And at the same time, we should be moved with great joy. Not just fear but also joy. No just joy but also fear -- reverent, worshipful, honoring fear of the Lord, while also being filled with the joy of the Lord. “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him!” (Psalm 33:8) “In Your Presence is fullness of joy!” (Psalm 16:11)   In holy fear and exuberant joy, I celebrate Your resurrection and embrace Your resurrection power to live my life in resurrection union with You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God! In the reverent fear of God, let me never take Your resurrection for granted. And in overflowing joy, let me never stop running with the word of the good news of Your resurrection glory! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. “Truly This Was the Son of God” - April 7, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, April 7 - “Truly This Was the Son of God”   Good morning, Lord Jesus. I honor You and remember Your sacrifice for me and for all the world on this day the world remembers Your Cross. ...   “Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’   “Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, ‘This Man is calling for Elijah!’ Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.   “The rest said, ‘Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.’   “And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.   “Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.   “So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, ‘Truly this was the Son of God!’” (Matthew 27:54)   In that moment, You were forsaken. In that moment, the Lamb of God took away the sin of the world (John 1:29). In that moment, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).   “Thank You” seems so shallow. “I honor You” seems so hollow. “I worship You” pales in comparison to the depths of all You have done for me.   So on this day that I remember You and the weightiness of all You’ve done for me, I just behold the Lamb and speak the words of the centurion -- the words of one who had not been able to fully esteem and comprehend just who You were and all You had done, but declared for all eternity, “Truly this was the Son of God.” In Jesus’ name I pray.
