“Truly This Was the Son of God” - April 7, 2023

Morning by Morning, April 7 - “Truly This Was the Son of God”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I honor You and remember Your sacrifice for me and for all the world on this day the world remembers Your Cross. ...

Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’

“Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, ‘This Man is calling for Elijah!’ Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.

“The rest said, ‘Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.’

“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

“Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

“So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, ‘Truly this was the Son of God!’” (Matthew 27:54)

In that moment, You were forsaken. In that moment, the Lamb of God took away the sin of the world (John 1:29). In that moment, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

“Thank You” seems so shallow. “I honor You” seems so hollow. “I worship You” pales in comparison to the depths of all You have done for me.

So on this day that I remember You and the weightiness of all You’ve done for me, I just behold the Lamb and speak the words of the centurion -- the words of one who had not been able to fully esteem and comprehend just who You were and all You had done, but declared for all eternity, “Truly this was the Son of God.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today. In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Secure in Identity in the Garden of Gethsemane - April 6, 2023

Morning by Morning, April 6 - Secure in Identity in the Garden of Gethsemane

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m humbled as I think of You and Your love for me, watching and waiting for the leading of Your Spirit to begin my day. ...

On that Thursday night of that Holy Week, You shared Your last supper with Your disciples, washing their feet and preparing their hearts, knowing in your heart the one who would openly betray You and the one who would openly deny You (John 13:1-38). You spoke to them about loving one another, serving one another, and living out their faith to share it with others in the Presence and power of Your Holy Spirit who would come into their hearts in Your name (John 14, 15, 16, and 17). Then You went out to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray (John 18:1).

What comes to mind is the scene from the Garden when the soldiers came to arrest You:

“After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with His disciples. So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to Him, came forward and asked them, ‘Whom are you looking for?’ They answered, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ Jesus replied, ‘I am He.’ Judas, who betrayed Him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, ‘I am He,’ they stepped back and fell to the ground” (John 18:1-6).

When You spoke the words, “I am He,” those who came to arrest You couldn’t stand in Your presence. Something in You and in the power of Your words pushed them “back” until they “fell to the ground.” In that moment, the darkness of their souls could not stand in the light of the glory of Your Presence.

There’s power in Your name. There’s power in Your identity. There’s power in Your words and Your voice and Your confidence to stand Your ground in truth and love.

Even though You already knew “all that was to happen to (You),” You weren’t afraid and You weren’t about to run and hide. They came at You with their “lanterns and torches and weapons,” but You stood Your ground with courage and faith and love. They may have thought they were coming to take Your life by force, but You were willingly surrendering Your life in love.

You are “I AM” (John 8:58, fulfilling Exodus 3:14). Your words push back the darkness. And now You are in us and we are in You (John 14:20). Your words abide in us, as we abide in You (John 15:7).

Fill me with Your Spirit, Lord Jesus -- “the Spirit of Christ” in me because my life is surrendered to You (Romans 8:9). Give me courage and faith and love to stand my ground from the place where my knees hit the ground in the communion of prayer with You. Speak Your words of spirit and life in truth through me. Push back the darkness and let everything fall to the ground that would try to insist on its own way apart from Your way. And keep me secure in the identity I have in You, as a beloved child of God through You (Romans 8:15-17). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today. In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be secure in Your identity because of the security of the identity of the Spirit of Christ in you, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Jesus Wept Over Jerusalem, but Also with Hope for a Time to Come - April 4, 2023

Morning by Morning, April 4 - Jesus Wept Over Jerusalem, but Also with Hope for a Time to Come

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and every moment of my day. ...

One day the crowds welcomed You with shouts of joy into Jerusalem. Another day soon to come they would cry out with shouts of anger to crucify You outside the gates of that same city. And what comes to mind this morning is the mournful cry of Your heart over that city in between those two days:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (Matthew 23:37-39).

The hardened heart of Israel broke Your heart. And today, every hardened heart that doesn’t understand the depths of Your love or the eternal cost of Your sacrifice or the power of Your grace in the mercy of Your love to change their lives now and for all eternity continues to break Your heart.

And if we have Your heart and mind, if we are the Body of Christ in this world with the Spirit of Christ filling our hearts, that should break our hearts too. That should move us in prayer over our cities and move us in action to share the hope that’s in us, flowing out our hearts that are fully surrendered to You.

Come, Holy Spirit. Give me the heart of Jesus for my city, for this generation in my world. Only Jesus has the power to change desolate lives and replace that with living hope.

During this Holy Week when more people are thinking about Jesus, when the world wonders why there’s such a world-wide movement that’s lasted for centuries, even for two thousand years of followers of Jesus, I pray for hearts to be turned to You. And I pray for that myself and all Your disciples will reach out to hearts that can be opened to You.

Even for Israel who could not see You in their day and missed their day of visitation, You spoke a word of hope: “You shall see Me no more till you, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (v. 39). The word “till” means there will come a day when Israel will see You, when Israel shall cry out, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” That will be a fulfillment of many prophecies one day, including the Prophecy of Zechariah:

“And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn” (Zechariah 12:10).

And one day even the Prophecy of the Apostle Paul, who carried Your passion for Jerusalem and all of Israel, will be fulfilled:

“For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:

‘The Deliverer will come out of Zion,

And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;

For this is My covenant with them,

When I take away their sins’” (Romans 11:25-27)

It’s hard for us the grasp Your heart and Your eternal perspective and Your heart to “have mercy on all” (Romans 11:32). I know I don’t have it all figured out. But I see these things of both mourning and mercy, grief and hope, in Your words and Your cry over Jerusalem that day.

Let our mourning for what is broken lead us to joy for what will be healed, let our grieve for what is lost lead us to joy for what will be found. Let our sorrow and sadness over what is desolate and dead le us to a living hope for what will be filled with life -- resurrection life that we only have in Christ alone.

For every soul that we mourn over and pray over who’s presently hardened their hearts to Your mercy and love, let us pray with expectant faith for the day of their “till” -- “till” they see You and cry out to You and welcome You as the One who comes in the name of the Lord! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today. In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be moved to pray and cry out over your city and over all who don't yet know the love and mercy and grace of God through Jesus Christ that their hearts and eyes would opened to Him, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Knowing When to Turn the Tables and When to Turn the Other Cheek - April 3, 2023

Morning by Morning, April 3 - Knowing When to Turn the Tables and When to Turn the Other Cheek

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your leading. ...

On the journey to the Cross, during this Holy Week, I’m remembering the story of when You went into the courts of the temple and overturned the tables of the money changers and drove them out with a whip, told in all four Gospels:

“In the temple courts (Jesus) found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So He made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle;

he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, ‘Get these out of here! Stop turning My Father’s house into a market!’” (John 2:14-16).

“He said to them, ‘It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers!’” (Matthew 21:13)

You never sinned, yet You did express Your anger. As Your Word calls us and cautions us, we’re to express our anger, yet without sinning in our anger. “Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil” (Ephesians 4:26-27).

Some things should make us angry. And some things should lead us to take action. But as we follow in Your steps and walk in Your ways, how are we to know when to turn the other cheek and when to turn over the tables? It’s only by seeking to live in communion with You and surrender to the leading of Your Spirit in all we do and say. “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” (Romans 8:14).

Even when we’re angry, even when we’re led to take action, give us grace to release our anger to You so we can then act and speak by the leading of Your Spirit. Get the money changers and robbers out of the temples of our hearts, so we can truly sense the leading of Your Spirit instead of the tempting of our flesh, acting out the righteous anger of God rather than the unrighteous anger of man. For our temple is not a place made of stone on a mountain, but a place prepared for Your Presence in our hearts. “For God’s temple is holy, and (we) are that temple” (1 Corinthians 3:16). “(Our) body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within (us), which (we) have from God, and (we) are not (our) own” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

The expression of Your emotions and the courage of Your convictions were part of what led to Your crucifixion. There were consequences for Your courage. And there will be consequences for ours. “A disciple is not above the teacher” (Matthew 10:24). As You said, “If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20). But You stand with us, as we stand in You, through whatever we encounter and endure as we take up our own cross daily to follow You (Luke 9:23).

Come fill the temple of my heart with the Holy Spirit of Your Presence, Lord. Get everything out of me that’s not yet like You. And give me humility to listen for Your leading and courage to act at Your command. Align my heart with Your heart, my thoughts with Your thoughts, in all my actions and my emotions out of the place of abiding communion with You, for “anyone united to the Lord become one spirit with Him” (1 Corinthians 6:17). And in that way, my temple will by Your house of prayer and my life will be an expression of Your heart. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

My friend, may you be filled with the Holy Spirit in the temple of your know, knowing when to turn the tables and when to turn the other check, as you take up your cross and follow Jesus on your journey of resurrection life in Him each day, in Jesus' name. God bless you!
