Morning by Morning, August 23 - “Awaken! Arise! Shine! Do Not Sit Back but Go Forth!” Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I draw near to You--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--I know You draw near to me, just as Your Word promises: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). ... As I wait for the leading of Your Spirit, I hear in my heart: “Awaken! Arise! Shine! Do not sit back but go forth! Do not hide away but shine forth! My people are My light in this world. My people are created and called to awaken, arise, and shine! For the darkness of this world shall not overcome the Light of My glory--not in My people, not in this world.” ... To confirm what I believe I hear and “test all things” to “hold fast” to what is good and true (1 Thessalonians 5:21), this Word of Your Scripture comes to mind immediately: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: ‘Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.’ “See then that you walk carefully, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:8-16). Yes, Lord. Awaken me. Arise within me. Shine through me. You know every measure of darkness that has sought to hide me and consume me, but I praise You for the Light of Your Glory that has saved me, healed me, freed me, and has now unhidden me! I’m remembering right now how I used to be afraid of the dark when I was younger--before the healing and deliverance of my soul (James 4:7). But now the darkness fears me because You are in me and I am in You! (John 15:4) Now I can arise and shine, for my Light has come! (Isaiah 60:1) And darkness cannot ever overcome the Light--the Light always overcomes the darkness (John 1:5). You are that Light in me, just as You said: “I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the Light of Life (John 8:12). And now by Your Spirit living in me, shining through me, “He who is in (me) is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). As You spoke to Your first disciples, so You still speak to every child of God and disciple of Jesus Christ today: “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). Lord, let it be so in me today--this day and every day--all by the power of Your grace motivating me and empowering me to Awaken! Arise! Shine! No holding back; no hiding away. Overcoming the darkness by the Glory of Your Light shining through me wherever I am and wherever You send me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, August 22 – “A Time of Trouble. A Time to Shine” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me hear Your voice in my heart, as I listen for Your leading, for Your sheep hear Your voice and follow You (John 10:27). ... As I wait, what comes to my heart are these words: “A time of trouble. A time to shine.” ... I’m drawn to the end of the Book of Daniel, to words written there, sealed up and “shut up” from understanding and revelation “until the time of the end” when “knowledge shall increase” (Daniel 12:4). There will come a day when these Prophetic Words are fulfilled: “At that time Michael shall stand up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever” (Daniel 12:1-3). At that time to come, it will be both “a time of trouble” and a time to “shine.” Despite the trouble of the darkness of those days, “Those who are wise shall shine.” And in their shining with “the brightness” of the glory You impart, they will “turn many to righteousness,” who will also be given that same brightness to shine “like the stars forever and ever.” Lord, let me be one of those who will “shine.” Even now, in the unfolding of time, in the advancing toward those days of both a time a trouble and a time to shine, be at work in my heart now. Get the darkness out of me; let Your Light shine in me. Cleanse my soul and awaken my spirit. As Your Word commands by the power of Your grace, we are to be children of the Light--"blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom (we) shine as lights in the world, holding fast the Word of Life, so that (we) may rejoice in the day of Christ” (Philippians 2:15-16). You are “the Light of the world” (John 8:12). And because You abide in us and we abide in You, You said to all who follow You and allow Your Light to shine through us, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Lord, lead me “in the paths of righteousness” now so that I can be among those who “turn many to righteousness” then (Psalm 23:3). Then “I will fear no evil” even through the darkest valleys and even “in the presence of my enemies” (Psalm 23:4-5). Every day now, between this day and those days to come, are days of preparation--days where Your Holy Spirit is preparing the way of the Lord in our hearts and in our world (Isaiah 40:3; Mark 1:3). Every day now and until those days to come, may I be a part of those You’ve called by Your name to awaken, to arise, and to shine: “Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you!” (Isaiah 60:1-2) Let me be one of those “found written in the book” You’re prepared to shine with an impartation and imputation of Your righteousness (Daniel 12:1). Do all that needs to be done in me now: Crucify my flesh (Galatians 2:20). Deliver me from evil (Matthew 6:13). Fill me with Your Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). No matter what times of trouble may come--in our world or in my life--may my eyes be upon You and by the power of Your grace, may the Light of Your glory arise and shine through me. “Christ in (me), the hope of glory”—Your glory shining through me and every one of the sons and daughters of God in Christ (Colossians 1:27). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, August 21 - Divine Favor to Walk with God by Imparted Righteousness through the Blood of Jesus Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are my Father and Friend, my Lord and Savior, my Counselor and Advocate, my God and King, my All in All. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God, I worship You and welcome You into every moment of my day. ... “The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually.... But Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord.... Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6:5-9). The blood of Jesus has the power to change the thoughts and hearts of men. And only the blood of Jesus can make wicked men righteous and blameless before God. “You know that (we) were ransomed from the wicked ways inherited from (our) ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish” (1 Peter 1:18-19). Through the blood of Jesus that cleanses our souls from sin, we each now have the opportunity and the honor to walk with God. We have the blessing to be called “children of God” (John 1:12). We have the outrageous fulfillment of Your promise to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). And we have the astounding truth of Your earth-shattering, divine decree that in Christ, we might become the righteousness of God--all by the mercy of God and the power of the blood of Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21). Noah found favor and walked with God, blameless in Your sight. And now through Christ, we have “a better covenant” with ever “better promises” (Hebrews 8:6). We have favor because You have chosen in the sovereignty of Your mercy and grace to favor us with forgiveness, so we can walk with You in the imparted righteousness of our intimate relationship with You. Lord, let me never take for granted the blessings and promises I have in You through the power of the blood of Jesus. Every day, cleanse me in Your blood and fill me with Your Spirit. Let me walk with You throughout the moments of my day, being forgiven of my sin and freed from the wicked nature that would consume me apart the ever-abiding Presence of Your holy nature within me and every one of Your children by Your Spirit (Colossians 1:19-23). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, August 19 - Loving Correction of a True Friend Good morning, Lord Jesus. I seek Your face and trust in Your grace to seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit. ... “Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful” (Proverbs 27:5-6). As expressed in the Easy English Bible Version of these Verses: “When a friend is not afraid to warn you that you are wrong,     it shows that he really loves you. You can trust a friend when he says things that hurt you.     But when an enemy kisses you, he is deceiving you” (Proverbs 27:5-6 EASY). Thank You for true friends who will speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Though they may wound our hearts in the moment, we can trust a true friend’s correction when spoken in honesty and love. When they love You and their hearts are surrendered to Your heart, their words are an expression of Your words, just as their heart is an expression of Your heart. So we can receive the correction, even embrace the rebuke, as a means of Your grace to help us learn and grow. And that’s the point--to learn and grow up into the image of Christ, to be conformed to the image of the Son of God (Romans 8:29). We’ll always need Your conviction and correction on our spiritual journey into Christ-likeness—"until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13). Where I’ve fallen short, where I’ve disappointed, where I’ve failed, help me learn from my mistakes of failing to love my friends as I should. And through repentance and prayer, saturated in mercy and love, may You make my true friendships even stronger than before, as You redeem all things and set all things right again (Romans 8:28). “As iron sharpens iron, So a (a person) sharpens the countenance of (their) friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Thank You for the iron—even when the blade is sharp and forged in fire, but coming from the heart of a true friend who loves You and loves me. Thank You that “Love bears all things, believes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:7). Thank You that “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8). And even though I do sometimes, You never do. You never have and You never will. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; (Your) mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is (Your) faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today.
