“Ministry of Reconciliation” - September 16, 2021

Morning by Morning, September 16 - “Ministry of Reconciliation”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. My Lord and Savior, I begin my day by surrendering to You all of my heart for every moment of my day, as best as I can and all by Your grace. ...

“For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that One has died for all; therefore all have died. And He died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died and was raised for them.... So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us” (2 Corinthians 5:14-19).

The enemy of our souls comes to divide, but You come to unite. Our enemy tries to stir up our flesh to reject one another, but You stir up our spirit to embrace one another. You empower us to speak the truth in love and also hear the truth in love, to surrender our pride and lay down our defenses to hear Your words of conviction that lead repentance and Your words of correction that lead to maturity.

When we allow You to do this in us and in the relationships of our lives, we’re taking hold of this “ministry of reconciliation” and we’re living into this “message of reconciliation.” When we allow You to do this in us and through us, “we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Reconciled to God, reconciled to one another, You make us stronger than before. You unite us in bonds of love not easily broken. You empower us to embrace the Promise of Your Word that love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8). No, with a heart committed to this ministry and message of reconciliation, love “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Corinthians 13:7). “And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you embrace the ministry of reconciliation, speaking the truth in love and hearing the truth in love, as an ambassador Christ, letting God make His appeal through you, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Our “Day of Atonement” - September 15, 2021

Morning by Morning, September 15 - Our “Day of Atonement”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You here in my heart and every moment of my day. ...

On the Biblical calendar, tonight at sunset begins the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur in Hebrew, and the holiest day of the year under the Biblical rhythm of seasons and festivals of the Lord set out in the Old Testament.

“This shall be a statute to you forever: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall deny yourselves, and shall do no work, neither the citizen nor the alien who resides among you. For on this day atonement shall be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins you shall be clean before the Lord” (Leviticus 16:29-30).

Under the Law of Moses it was the day that all sins were washed away in a national day of repentance, as the people humbled themselves before God and the high priest offered sacrifice for his sins and the sins of all the people. Then that solemn day would lead into the days of the Feast of Tabernacles at the time of the harvest to begin five days later (v. 34). That’s when their mourning would be turned to dancing and their fasting would be turned to feasting.

There’s something in the human soul that knows our sin against the will of God and knows our need for forgiveness by the mercy of God. And under the Old Covenant, with its precise rituals and ordinances to be followed to perfection, You made provision for the fulfillment of our human need for divine mercy through the sacrifice of the blood of a pure, spotless, and blameless animal by the high priest in the holiest place on the holiest day.

In Your eternal plan, every Day of Atonement pointed to the Day of Your Atonement -- the day You were both our High Priest and our Holy Sacrifice.
All the law of Moses, all the Prophetic Promises of the Word of God, all the physical rituals that speak of the spiritual realities were fulfilled in You (Luke 24:44). You are the Lamb of God who has forever taken away the sins of the world (John 1:29).

The ultimate Day of Atonement took place on the Day of the Cross. Your Sacrifice perfectly fulfilled of every law of the Old Covenant, that none of us could ever satisfy by human works or human righteousness. And after You paid the price for our sins “once for all,” the temple at the holy place of sacrifice by the high priest on the Day of Atonement each year was completely destroyed (Hebrews 10:10). Just as You had prophesied, no stone was left upon another; and no sacrifice has been offered by any high priest in that holy place since the year 70 AD to the present.

There is no longer a need for the sacrifice of the blood of animals. Messiah has come, fulfilling the prophecies the One who would willingly suffer the penalty of our sins, once for all (Isaiah 53:4-12). You are our High Priest; You are our Perfect Sacrifice -- for Jew, for Gentile, for all (1 Peter 3:18). “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of (us) are one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). “Christ is all and in all” (Colossians 3:11). “For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body -- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free -- and we were all made to drink of one Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:13).

So as we humble ourselves before God -- this day and every day -- honestly acknowledging our sin and our need for our Savior has who forever made our sacrifice, You continue to fulfill Your Word of forgiveness through Your Covenant of mercy. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:8-9).

In Christ Jesus -- our Messiah, Savior, and Lord -- every day we entrust our lives to Your love, embracing the mercy of Your Sacrifice, is our Day of Atonement. With clean hands and pure hearts, cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, You turn our mourning into dancing and our fasting into feasting in the joy of Your forgiveness! Then You send us into Your harvest. Thank You, Lord, for all the fasts and feasts of Your Covenant, now fulfilled in Christ for us all. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with joy, forgiven and free, as you embrace all our Messiah and Perfect Sacrifice has done for us through His Atonement, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

“In Full Accord and of One Mind" - September 14, 2021

Morning by Morning, September 14 - “In Full Accord and of One Mind"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lord and Savior, Father and Friend, O Lord, my God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -- I welcome You here in my heart and every moment of my day. ...

“If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind” (Philippians 2:1-2).

There’s encouragement in Christ when we’re able to share in the Spirit, when we’re able to join together “in full accord and of one mind.” How do we get there? ...

By listening to each other, by loving each other, by be willing to speak the truth in love to each other and also hear the truth in love from each other (Ephesians 4:15). That’s part of how we “grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ” (v. 15). That’s part of how we “come to the unity of the faith,” how we come “to maturity, to the measure of the stature of Christ” (v. 13).

We don’t start off there, but we have to want to get there -- as messy as it may be, as hard to speak and as hard to hear as it may be. But that’s the only way we can come to the place of “full accord” and “one mind.” That’s the only way we can “let the same mind be in (us) that was in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).

And what was that “mind” that “was in Christ Jesus?” ...

“Who, though He was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
    as something to be exploited,
but emptied Himself,
taking the form of a slave,
    being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
He humbled Himself
and became obedient to the point of death--
even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:6-8).

Humility is the mind of Christ. Self-sacrifice is the mind of Christ. Death to self in the sense of being willing to die to anything in us not yet fully surrendered to the will and the ways of God is the mind of Christ (Matthew 26:39).

Lord knows, I’m not there yet. And none of us can even begin to do that in our own power or wisdom, no matter how hard we try for it or desire it, because apart from You, we can do nothing (John 15:5).

So we need You. We need Your Spirit to align our mind with Your mind, our heart with Your heart (Philippians 2:13). And as we each seek that, as we each allow that to be our goal and our standard for love and life together in the unity of the Spirit, we will “have the mind of Christ” -- not just in heaven, but also here on earth as it is in heaven (1 Corinthians 2:16; Matthew 6:10). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be empowered by the Holy Spirit on your journey in spiritual maturity to speak the truth in love and hear the truth in love, as the Lord brings us to a true unity of one accord and one mind in His love, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

“Be Tenderhearted” - September 13, 2021

Morning by Morning, September 13 - “Be Tenderhearted”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I stand in awe of You -- the One to whom all praise is do. ...

As I listen for the leading of Your Holy Spirit this morning, I hear in my heart these words -- “Be tenderhearted. Don’t be afraid to be tender of heart, even as you are strong in the Spirit.” ...

Yes, Lord. As I seek Your written Word to test and confirm what I believe to be Your spoken word, I remember Your teaching through the Apostle Peter -- one who was strong in the Spirit, but also tender of heart:

“Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. For

‘He who would love life
And see good days,
Let him refrain his tongue from evil,
And his lips from speaking deceit.
Let him turn away from evil and do good;
Let him seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their prayers;
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.’

And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. ‘And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.’ But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil” (1 Peter 3:8-12).

Being “tenderhearted” has nothing to do with receiving our salvation, which is by grace, through faith alone (Romans 3:28; Ephesians 2:8). But being “tenderhearted” has everything to do with having the mind of Christ, hearing the heart of the Father, and living out our salvation in the Spirit. None of that is by our own wisdom or power, but by Yours alone, by the abiding Presence of Your Spirit living in us, changing us, making us more like You every day. “For it is God who works in (us) both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).

I have a friend who almost always comes to tears when he reads Your Word out-loud. I have another friend almost always trembles when he stands to pray out-loud. Both are very strong in the Spirit, yet very tender in their heart. By Your grace, they’re living into the command of Your Word, “Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand” (Philippians 4:5).

Lord, make me more tender of heart, more sensitive to Your Spirit. Soften my heart of stone wherever it’s grown hard or weary or defensive through the daily journey of living out my faith in this challenging world (Ezekiel 36:26; Romans 2:29). This is “the mind of Christ” and this is the heart of Christ (Philippians 2:5).

Thank You, Lord, for Your heart that You have poured into me and that You keep forming in me, as I keep opening my heart to You. “The love of God has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5). By the power of Your grace at work within me, You’ll keep making more tenderhearted even as You make me more strong in the Spirit. Just as You promised, He who began a good work in me will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with awe in the reverent fear of the Lord, full of joyful expectation of all He has set before you, as you choose well in the freedom He give, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Days of Awe - September 10, 2021

Morning by Morning, September 10 - Days of Awe

Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I look to You, I seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ...

“Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him!” (Psalm 33:8)

On the rhythms of the Biblical calendar, these are the “Ten Days of Awe” between the New Year (Rosh Hashanah) and the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). And all the feasts, like all the Law and the Prophets and all of Scripture, are ultimately fulfilled in You, our Savior and Sovereign Lord, the Living Word of God (Matthew 5:17; John 1:14).

So as we remember these days on our spiritual journey, we remember their purpose. These “appointed festivals of the Lord” are times of repentance and renewed commitment, of both holy convocation and joyful celebration, in the reverent fear and awe of the Lord our God (Leviticus 23:1-44).

Even as we are awestruck by all that’s happening around us in our world right now and by the ways of the governments of our world choosing to respond and to compel us to respond, we look to You, we’re awestruck by You, we stand in awe of You. Every day is a day of awe, when we choose to live in awe of You.

Come, Holy Spirit of God. Move our hearts to turn to You, to the Lord our God, in honor and humility, in the fear of the Lord, in awe of the Lord. When others would seek to control us or when we seek to control ourselves in our own wisdom and our own strength in our own ways apart from You, move us to turn to the One who is sovereign and Lord of all (Ephesians 4:6; Acts 10:36).

You never take away our freedom, even when it breaks Your heart over the some of the choices we may make. But You call us to use our freedom to choose to trust You, to surrender to You, to allow You to be in control of our lives, to allow You to be Lord of our lives.

You still “set before (us) life and death, blessings and curses” but at the same time, You passionately call us to “choose life, so that (we) and (our) children may live and that (we) may love the Lord (our) God, listen to (You), and hold fast to (You)” (Deuteronomy 30:19-20). You send us forth in faith to enter into our Promised Land, choosing well, but free to choose (Deuteronomy 31:1-30). We can enter in to all You’ve set before us, we can go in boldly and courageously, because You are with us. You never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6; Hebrews 13:5). You are with us always (Matthew 28:20).

So during these “Ten Days of Awe,” we stand in awe of You. And in every day and every way we continue to make our choices in the freedom we have in You, may we choose well. May we choose to reverence You and honor You, to trust You and serve You and follow You into all You’ve set before us. “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:14). As for me and my house -- as best as we can and all by Your grace, as far as Your grace will go -- we will honor You and stand in awe of You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays
