Living Examples of Courage and Confidence - March 16, 2022

Morning by Morning, March 16 - Living Examples of Courage and Confidence   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Rule and reign as King of kings and Lord of lords, here in my heart and here in my life, this day and every day. ...   In these days where we desperately need courage to stand our ground in the confidence that never surrenders and never retreats, in these days where we can feel so outnumbered and overwhelmed by forces beyond our control, You call us to come to You. You bring us into Your Presence to ground us in Your Word and fill us with Your Spirit.   This morning the Congress of our nation will hear from the leader of Ukraine. And no matter what is going on the war with Russia, no matter what is true or false in all the underlying stories and substories of the conflict, all the world sees a great measure of courage in this man as he seeks to lead his people through this horrendous time.   It strikes me that he sounds a lot like Winston Churchill and acts a lot like one of David’s mighty men of valor, whose stories are now inscribed on the pages of Scripture forever:   “These are the names of the warriors whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of The Three; he wielded his spear against eight hundred whom he killed at one time.   Next to him among the three warriors was Eleazar son of Dodo son of Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle. The Israelites withdrew, but he stood his ground. He struck down the Philistines until his arm grew weary, though his hand clung to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. Then the people came back to him--but only to strip the dead.   Next to him was Shammah son of Agee, the Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi, where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the army fled from the Philistines. But he took his stand in the middle of the plot, defended it, and killed the Philistines; and the Lord brought about a great victory” (2 Samuel 23:8-12).   These three were courageous men, secure in their covenant with You. When others fled, they took their stand. When others panicked, they stood in faith.   In their day, in the battles they faced in the world they knew, they were inspired in faith and empowered with courage as they looked to their leader, King David. And in our day, in our battles we face in the world we know, we look to our Leader, King Jesus, Son of David, Son of God.   We look to You and call on Your name, the name above all names (Philippians 2:9). We can stand in You as You stand in us; and all must bow to the authority of Your name (v.10).   In You, we can stand firm in the courage and confidence You supply, never to surrender, never to retreat. In You, we can “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of (Your) power” (Ephesians 6:10). In You, we are “able to withstand on (every) evil day (we endure), and having done everything, to stand firm (Ephesians 6:13).   May You move by Your Holy Spirit to stir in hearts to look to You through every conflict we endure through these evil days--whether in Ukraine or Russia, whether here in our own hearts at home or to the ends of the earth. You are our Leader. And there is no true courage or confidence that carries any eternal significance apart from You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Communion with God, Not Conformity to the World - March 15, 2022

Morning by Morning, March 15 - Communion with God, Not Conformity to the World   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Heart to heart, spirit to Spirit, deep to Deep, I turn to You and wait for Your leading to begin my day in communion with You--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. For “anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him (and) “(our) body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within (us), which (we) have from God” (1 Corinthians 6:17-19). ...   Yes, Lord. There’s a communion with You that keeps me from being “conformed to the world” (Romans 12:2). I’m in this world, but not of this world. As You said to our Father before You went to the cross, to be raised from the dead, to overcome the grave, to ascend to heaven, and to pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us to be Your witnesses in our world in Your prayer of John Chapter 17:   “After Jesus had spoken these words, He looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son so that the Son may glorify You, since You have given Him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on earth by finishing the work that You gave Me to do. So now, Father, glorify Me in Your own presence with the glory that I had in Your presence before the world existed.   “I have made Your name known to those whom You gave Me from the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they know that everything You have given Me is from You; for the words that You gave to Me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom You gave Me, because they are Yours. All Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them in Your name that You have given Me, so that they may be one, as We are One” (John 17:1-11).   Yes, Lord. Make us one with You and one with each other. Heart to heart, spirit to Spirit, deep to Deep--in communion with You, not conformity to the world. Just as You continued to pray:   “I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their word, that they may all be one. As You, Father, are in Me and I am in You, may they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. The glory that You have given Me I have given them, so that they may be one, as We are One, I in them and You in Me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that You have sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me” (John 17:20-23).   Yes, Lord. This unity of communion with You has a purpose, just as You continued to pray and finished Your prayer with this eternal declaration:   “Righteous Father, the world does not know You, but I know You; and these know that You have sent Me. I made Your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:25-26).   Love is the purpose. To love and to be loved. And even to share Your love in our world, as the nature and character and essence of Your love becomes one with us. We’re in this world, but not of this world. And we’re in this world to love--not in conformity to the world, but in communion with You. And in communion with You, Your heart will be in us:   “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 NKJV). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “Be Steady and Be Ready.” - March 14, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, March 14 - “Be Steady and Be Ready.”   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Make me more like You today (1 John 4:17).   As I settle into my prayer chair for my morning time with You, I immediately hear in my heart:   “Be steady and be ready.” ...   Yes, Lord. The nations are in an uproar. The kingdoms of the world are being shaken. Propaganda and accusations, anxieties and lies, confusion and chaos, high prices and low morale seem to daily sweep over our minds to try to defile our souls. But at the same, You say, “Be steady.” You say, “Be ready.”   It’s almost like the world is in a set-up for salvation. So let us “be steady” with our eyes and our hearts fixed on You. Let us “be ready” with the words of life You’ve put in our hearts to share with a desperate world seeking hope that can only be found in You.   The Words of Psalm 46 come to mind to confirm Your word to me this morning:   “God is our refuge and strength,     a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,     though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam,     though the mountains tremble with its tumult.  Selah   There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,     the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;     God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;     He utters His voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us;     the God of Jacob is our refuge.  Selah   Come, behold the works of the Lord;     see what desolations He has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;     He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;     He burns the shields with fire. ‘Be still, and know that I AM God!     I AM exalted among the nations,     I AM exalted in the earth.’ The Lord of hosts is with us;     the God of Jacob is our refuge.  Selah” (Psalm 46:1-11).   Yes, Lord. I will Selah--I will pause and think about it; I will ponder Your Word in my heart. And by the power of Your grace at work in my heart and soul and mind and strength, I will “be steady and be ready.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “I Am He!” - March 11, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, March 11 - “I Am He!”   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Rule and reign in my heart and every moment of my day, my King -- for You are “the King of kings and Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:16) and Your name is “the name that is above every name” (Philippians 2:9). ...   As I watch and wait, listening for the leading of Your Holy Spirit to speak to my heart this morning, I hear in my heart Your words:    “I am He.”   And what immediately comes to mind is the scene from the Garden of Gethsemane when the soldiers came to arrest You:   “After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with His disciples. So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to Him, came forward and asked them, ‘Whom are you looking for?’ They answered, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’  Jesus replied, ‘I am He.’ Judas, who betrayed Him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, ‘I am He,’ they stepped back and fell to the ground” (John 18:1-6).   When You spoke the words, “I am He,” those who came to arrest You couldn’t stand in Your presence. Something in You and in the power of Your words pushed them “back” until they “fell to the ground.”   There’s power in Your name. There’s power in Your identity. There’s power in Your words and Your voice and Your confidence to stand Your ground in truth and love.   Even though You already knew “all that was to happen to (You),” You’re weren’t afraid and You weren’t about to run and hide. They came at You with their “lanterns and torches and weapons,” but You stood Your ground with courage, faith, obedience and love -- love that that moved You to set aside the glory of heaven to come to this earth in the likeness of human flesh and blood to lay down Your life for us so that we could live forever with You (Philippians 2:5-8).   You said: “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from My Father” (John 10:17-18).   And Your Word tells us to “let the same mind be in (us) that was in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). We can have that “same mind” because when we are in Christ and Christ is in us, we have that same Spirit -- the Spirit who spoke through You in power, the Spirit who gave You courage to overcome and fulfill Your calling, secure in Your identity according the will of the Father, the Spirit who raised You from the dead after You laid down Your life:   “But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through His Spirit (who) dwells in you” (Romans 8:9-11).   Dwell in me, Holy Spirit of the Living God, “the Spirit of Christ” in me. Speak Your words of power and truth and love in me and through me according to the will of my Father for my life. Push back the darkness and let everything fall to the ground that would try to insist on its own way apart from Your way. And keep me secure in the identity I have in You as a beloved child of God entrusting my life to the will of God:   “When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ--if, in fact, we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him” (Romans 8:15-17).   There’s power in Your words. And because You abide in us and we abide in You as children of God and disciples of Christ, there’s power in our words (Mark 11:22-25).   You are “I AM” (John 8:58, fulfilling Exodus 3:14). And now You are in me and I am in You (John 14:20). “Christ in (me), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
