“Courage of Conviction” by the Word and the Spirit - November 29, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 29 - “Courage of Conviction” by the Word and the Spirit

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You here in my heart and every moment of my day -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...

As I watch and wait for Your leading this morning, I hear “Have courage of conviction. My Word and My Spirit are your conviction and your courage.” ...

Yes, Lord. This Word from Your Scripture comes to mind immediately to confirm this word from Your Spirit:

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the person of God may be proficient, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

And this Word:

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” (Romans 8:14).

All around the world and even here in our nation founded upon foundations of freedom of religion and freedom of speech, moral convictions and religious liberty is under attack. Sometimes it’s like being whittled away with a pocket knife and sometimes it’s like being bludgeoned with a lumber axe.

Our leaders swear an oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.” And our Constitution declares, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

But the responsibility rests not only upon our leaders, but upon every citizen to engage in civil discourse with honor and respect according to their conscience and convictions. For us who are citizens of the Kingdom of God, no matter where we live and no matter what pressures there are to surrender our rights and silence our voice, we are called to be grounded in Your Word and led by Your Spirit in all things.

“Our citizenship is in Heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20).

It’s not from Washington or Austin; it’s not from the ACLU or the political parties; it’s not from back room negotiations or front yard campaign signs. It’s from Heaven that we’re expecting a Savior. And it’s from Heaven we have a Savior. And His name is Jesus.

When Jesus lives in our hearts, we look to the Word of God and the Spirit of God to be our conviction and provide our courage.

That’s the kind of conviction and courage that moved in the hearts of the Hebrew children who would not bow down to the king’s idol, boldly declaring: “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to present a defense to you in this matter. If our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire and out of your hand, O king, let Him deliver us. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods and we will not worship the golden statue that you have set up” (Daniel 3:16-18).

That’s the kind of conviction and courage You expressed in the face of the one who had the power to release You or crucify You, boldly declaring, “My Kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36).

And that’s the kind of conviction and courage that burned like fire in his belly of one of the founding fathers of our nation named Patrick, who insisted upon our Bill of Rights to codify our freedom of religious liberty and moral conviction, boldly declaring, “Give me liberty or give me death!”

Come, Holy Spirit. Let us be no less bold, no less courageous, in our convictions. Let us not be content to sit back and keep silent in our day when so much is at stake. Inspired by Your Word, empowered by Your Spirit, we’re looking to our Savior. And may we be ready to answer the call when our Savior looks to us to be the “Body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:27), filled with the “Spirit of Christ” (Romans 8:9), standing up and speaking out as “ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be courageous in your convictions, grounded in the Word and filled with the Spirit, as an ambassador for Christ wherever the Lord has you positioned for His purposes, in Jesus' name. Happy Thanksgiving! God bless you!

Transitioning from Thanksgiving to Christmas - November 28, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 28 - Transitioning from Thanksgiving to Christmas

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I begin my day by speaking out Your name to embrace Your Spirit, here in my heart and every moment of my day (Romans 8:9). ...

On the seasonal calendar that marks the traditional Christian influences upon the character of our nation, we’re transitioning from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Each holiday season carries its own sense of emotions, expectations, and meanings.

In Thanksgiving, we, of course, sense thankfulness and gratitude. We’re thankful and grateful for our God who provides, for our God who gets us through the challenges, for our God who’s with us always no matter what we face with the grace to overcome. In Christmas, we’re looking forward with hope and expectant faith for the coming of the One who fulfills the promises of God.

In a way then, Christmas comes before Thanksgiving in the way that we hope with expectant faith for God to come in the Christmas season. And then, after we experience Your coming day in and day out, all year long, we celebrate with thanksgiving and gratitude that You came and that You’re here in the Thanksgiving season.

While I’m very aware of all the discussions and debates of the origins and influences of both of these holiday seasons, I’m also very aware of Your power to redeem all things and cause all things to work together for good (Romans 8:28). And among all the messiness and messaging around these days, I see Your Spirit moving in hearts with renewed gratitude every Thanksgiving and with renewed hope every Christmas.

So in this transitioning from Thanksgiving to Christmas, I’m welcoming Your Spirit in my heart to begin a fresh stirring of hope with expectant faith, grounded in the confidence of so many seasons of these spiritual cycles where I’ve been able to thank You for a hope that doesn’t disappoint and a faith that never fails.

“And this hope will never disappoint us, because God has poured out His love to fill our hearts. He gave us His love through the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to us” (Romans 5:5 NCV).

With thanksgiving in my heart and also filled with hope and expectant faith, I join my prayer for all who are now transitioning from Thanksgiving to Christmas with the prayer of the Apostle Paul:

“I pray that the God who gives hope will fill you with much joy and peace while you trust in Him. Then your hope will overflow by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

As the spirit and season of Thanksgiving was filled with gratitude, now let the spirit and season of Christmas be filled with hope -- all by the abiding grace of Your Presence and the overflowing power of Your Holy Spirit filling our hearts with faith and hope and love. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with both thanksgiving and with the hope of expectant faith for the coming of the One who fulfills all the promises of God, in Jesus' name. Happy Thanksgiving! God bless you!

“In Everything Give Thanks” - November 23, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 23 - “In Everything Give Thanks”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift up my heart and listen up for Your voice to go where You lead in my morning prayer and every moment of my day (John 10:3). ...

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NASB).

The will of God for me is not “everything” I go through. The will of God for me is that I “give thanks” in everything I go through.

Not everything that happens in this broken and fallen world is the will of God. Evil is never the will of God, but evil happens in this world. Sin is never the will of God, but sin happens in this world.

So even though there is evil, even though there is sin, even though there are so many things that I will go through to endure and overcome on my journey through this world in this little sliver of time that I have, You give me the power of Your grace to go through it all with thanksgiving in my heart. Not thanksgiving for the evil and the sin, not thanksgiving for the things that break Your heart and mine, but thanksgiving that You are with me, that You are for me, that You will even cause all these things to “work together for good” (Romans 8:28) and that “in all these things” I am “more than a conqueror through Him who loved (me)” and that none of these things “will be able to separate (me) from the love of God in Christ Jesus (my) Lord” (Romans 8:37-39).

That’s what I’m thankful for. That’s what fills my heart with thanksgiving in all things. That’s how I can live into the invitation of Your Word to “Rejoice in the Lord always,” to “be anxious for nothing,” because “the Lord is at hand,” filling me with “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,” which “will guard (my) heart and (my) mind in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:4-7).

That’s why Thanksgiving is more than a holiday. It’s even more than a holy day. Thanksgiving is an attitude of the heart, a perspective of life, that I can choose to embrace by Your grace every day.

And so I do. Lord, I thank You. “In everything (I) give thanks.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with thanksgiving to God in everything in all you go through and endure and overcome by the power of the grace of God, in Jesus' name. Happy Thanksgiving! God bless you!

Preparing the Messengers to Proclaim the Message - November 22, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 22 - Preparing the Messengers to Proclaim the Message

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Seeking to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit, I settle in to my prayer chair for my morning time with You. ...

“Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of His coming, and who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear Me, says the Lord of hosts.

“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts” (Malachi 3:1-7).

Lord, You’re calling Your messengers. You’re preparing Your messengers who will prepare the way of the Lord.

Your Holy Spirit is refining hearts and purifying souls -- first in the hearts of Your messengers so that they can boldly proclaim Your Message. And You are the Message.

You say, “Return to Me” (v. 6). You don’t say, “Return to a teaching. Return to time that was better. Return to an institution or a government or to a place where it appeared everything was fine and everyone was free and every house was full.” No, You say, “Return to Me.” You say, “Return to Me, and I will return to you.”

In a place and time -- here in our hearts, here in our nation, here in our world -- where we are being drawn away, farther and farther from You, You’re preparing Your messengers to proclaim Your Message to return to You.

In the place and time of the days of Isaiah, You took a coal from the burning fire of the altar of Heaven to touch his lips, to refine his heart, to purify his soul, to be a voice for You and Your Message in his generation. You asked from the heart of all the fullness of God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” (Isaiah 6:8). And Your messenger responded from all the fullness of his heart, fully surrendered to You, “Here I am. Send me” (v. 8).

I join with the hearts of every messenger You’re calling and preparing to prepare the way of the Lord in this place and time of our generation. I turn to You. I return to You. As best as I can and all by Your grace, I embrace Your refining of my heart and cleansing of my soul, ready to proclaim Your Message, ready to proclaim You, for You are the Message. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you embrace the refining of your heart and purifying of your soul to be a messenger of the Lord in every way He calls you and send you to proclaim the Message of who He is for everyone in our world, in Jesus' name. God bless you!
