“A People Prepared for the Lord” - December 9, 2022

Morning by Morning, December 9 - “A People Prepared for the Lord”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be high and lifted up, glorified and magnified, in my heart and every moment of my day (John 12:32). ...

“He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (Luke 1:17).

Before the coming of Christ, came the one who was “filled with the Holy Spirit” to be a voice of one crying out in the wilderness, preparing the way of the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah (v. 16). He was making ready “a people prepared for the Lord.”

What does it mean to be “a people prepared for the Lord?” ...

As I listen and wait this morning, what comes to my heart is part of the prophecy of John’s father, Zacharias, when Zacharias was “filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied” over his newborn son, declaring his calling:

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest;

For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,

To give knowledge of salvation to His people

By the remission of their sins,

Through the tender mercy of our God,

With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;

To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,

To guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:76-79).

To be prepared for the Lord, to be made ready for His coming, is to have knowledge of salvation, to receive the remission of sin by the tender mercy of God, to embrace the light of the glory of God who leads us out of darkness and death into the way of peace.

Come, Holy Spirit. Just as You came though the prophecy of Zacharias and through the ministry of John to prepare the way of the Lord, to “make ready a people prepared for the Lord,” come prepare my heart.

The knowledge of salvation is knowing You are my Salvation, Lord Jesus. Not by my works, not be trying to be good enough, not by trying to be a good person who does good things and lives a good life. But by faith alone, by faith in You alone.

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace (we) have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace (we) have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:4-10).

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under Heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

“‘The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved’” (Romans 10:8-13).

In this season of preparation, in anticipation and expectant faith to celebrate the birth of Christ, I turn to You and to You alone for my salvation, Lord Jesus. I confess with my mouth You are Lord and believe in my heart that God the Father raised You from the dead as God the Son by the resurrection power of God the Holy Spirit.

I make room in my heart for You and Your Spirit to make me alive together with Christ by Your mercy and grace for me. This is the gift of the children of God, available to all who answer the call to be made ready for Your coming -- “a people prepared for the Lord.”

“And because (we) are (children of God), God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into (our) hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’ Therefore (we) are no longer a slave but a (child), and if a (child), then an heir of God through Christ” (Galatians 4:6-7).

Abba, Father! Lord Jesus! Holy Spirit of God! I’m ready for You. I prepare a place for You in my heart, because You’ve prepared a place for me in Yours. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Preparing the Way of the Lord “In the Spirit and Power of Elijah” - December 8, 2022

Morning by Morning, December 8 - Preparing the Way of the Lord “In the Spirit and Power of Elijah”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead me by Your Spirit into all You have for me today. Help me hear all You would speak to me today, for Your sheep hear Your voice (John 10:3) and Your children are led by Your Spirit (Romans 8:14). ...

Before the Angel Gabriel spoke to Mary about the birth of Jesus, he first spoke to Zacharias about the birth of John, who would prepare the way for the coming of the Lord as the Christ, as the long-awaited Messiah. ...

The angel announced his identity to Zacharias, declaring, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings” (Luke 1:19). And he announced the destiny of the son who would be born to Zacharias and Elizabeth named John before the birth of Jesus the Christ:

“The angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord’” (Luke 1:13-17).

John would “make ready a people prepared for the Lord” before the coming of the Lord Jesus as the Christ, as the Messiah of Israel and all the world. And now, in this Christmas season where all the world hears the story of the birth of Jesus -- in movies and plays, television and radio, shopping malls and greeting cards, and throughout almost every aspect of culture, despite their attitude toward God -- may Your Holy Spirit go forth as John went forth to “make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

John was “filled with the Holy Spirit” and he spoke to hearts, turning hearts back to what is right and true, to prepare the way of the Lord “in the spirit and power of Elijah.” How we need that same Spirit today! That same Holy Spirit, that same “spirit and power of Elijah” today!

As I read through this story I’ve read many times, what strikes me this morning is that when I think of “the spirit and power of Elijah,” I often think of the great miracles You worked through Elijah as a demonstration of the power and Presence of the One True God. I think of when he called down fire from Heaven on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:20-14), of when he raised a dead child back to life (1 Kings 17:17-24), of when he declared a judgment of drought for three and half years on the kingdom ruled by Ahab and Jezebel (1 Kings 17:1), and of when he fervently prayed for the drought to be broken and abundance of rain to be restored (1 King 18:41-46), and so many other miracles of power expressed through the words and prayers You gave him at Your command.

Yet, when John the Baptist came preparing the way of the Lord “in the spirit and power of Elijah,” You did not work any miracles of power like this through John. “John performed no sign” (John 10:41). And at the same time, “All things that John spoke about (Jesus) were true” (John 10:41).

What strikes me this morning is that the ministry of preparing the way of the Lord was not primarily a ministry of miracles other than what is maybe the greatest miracle of all -- changing hearts. “In the spirit and power of Elijah” he was turning hearts back to God, back to what is right and true, even without miracles and signs and wonders.

In fact, the prayer to change hearts was the heart of the prayer of Elijah on Mount Carmel before he called down fire from Heaven to reveal the One True God. He cried out in prayer:

“Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again” (1 Kings 18:36-37).

That’s when the fire fell! And that’s when hearts were turned back to God in a moment!

“Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, ‘The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” (1 Kings 18:38-39).

That was revival! That was revival in hearts that were changed that day! That was revival that came through the Spirit of God moving “in the spirit and power of Elijah!”

I thank You and praise You for signs and wonders, and for how You use signs and wonders to confirm Your Word and to save souls. After Your resurrection, the disciples “went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs” (Mark 16:20). “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” (Hebrews 2:3-4). “And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord” (Acts 5:12). Not just through the first apostles, but also through those who would follow, such as through the ministry of Phillip, when he “went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city” (Acts 8:4-8).

Yet John, having “the spirit and power of Elijah,” “performed no sign” (John 10:41). That is, “no sign,” except hearts and souls revived and returned to God!

Lord, release this “spirit and power of Elijah” today! Bring revival in hearts today! Prepare the way of the Lord in my heart and in the hearts in my world, in my nation, in my community, in my family today! Thank You for the greatest sign and wonder of all -- a heart of one who falls on their face before the Living God, crying out as in the days of Elijah and the days of John the Baptist, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may your heart be prepared for the coming of the Lord with a heart fully turned to Him and filled with His Holy Spirit, as He uses your life to prepare the way of the Lord in the hearts of others in your family, community, nation, and world, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

When the Promises of God Seem Too Good To Be True - December 7, 2022

Morning by Morning, December 7 - When the Promises of God Seem Too Good To Be True

Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I speak out Your name, I listen for Your voice to begin my day coming to my Father through Jesus my Lord by the Holy Spirit of God. ...

“Then an angel of the Lord appeared to (Zacharias), standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.’ ...

And Zacharias said to the angel, ‘How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.’

“And the angel answered and said to him, ‘I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.’” (Luke 1:11-19).

The angel’s words seemed too good to be true. Even though they were the words of God sent from the angel Gabriel himself, even though they were the very answer to Zacharias’ prayers, they seemed too good to be true. So Zachariaa “did not believe” (v. 20).

So many times it’s no different with us. Though “All the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God,” we find it hard to believe and hard to receive (2 Corinthians 1:20). Though “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ ... has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,” we do not believe and do not receive so many times because it just seems too good to be true (Ephesians 1:3).

But the truth is every word You speak to us will come to pass:

“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven,

And do not return there,

But water the earth,

And make it bring forth and bud,

That it may give seed to the sower

And bread to the eater,

So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;

It shall not return to Me void,

But it shall accomplish what I please,

And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:10-11).

As You said, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).

And every Word You have written for us in Scripture as the Word of God will be fulfilled. As You also said, “The Scripture cannot be broken” (John 6:35).

So forgive us for our doubt and unbelief, our lack of faith and unfaithfulness. You forgave Zacharias and brought Your word to pass despite his initial doubt and unbelief. In the meantime, You did seal his mouth shut so he couldn’t “un-speak” what You had spoken. Our words have power, even the power of life and death, of which we shall eat if its fruit (Proverbs 18:21). And out of our mouths can come words of either blessing or cursing, over ourselves or over others (James 3:10).

The next time Zacharias spoke, he spoke words in faith and in faithful agreement with You and Your words of blessing. “His mouth was opened and tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God” for this fulfilment of Your word and naming his son John, just as You had said (Luke 1:63-64).

In this season of expectant faith and yearning hope when celebrate the coming of Christ, increase our faith, increase our trust in Your words and Your Word, which will all surely come to pass. Just as the angel Gabriel declared, they “will be fulfilled in their own time” (Luke 1:10).

As it turns out, they’re not too good to be true after all.

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be set free from doubt and unbelief, as you trust in the God whose promises are Yes and Amen to the glory of God, never too good to be true, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

The Redeemer of Hope in Our Hearts in This Season - December 6, 2022

Morning by Morning, December 6 - The Redeemer of Hope in Our Hearts in This Season

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You here in my heart and every moment of my day. ...

“There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years” (Luke 1:5-7).

The Gospel of Luke tells the story of Jesus beginning with the story of John the Baptist, who would first “prepare the way of the Lord” for the coming of the Messiah, for the coming of Christ. And the story of John the Baptist begins with the story of his father, Zacharias, and his mother, Elizabeth.

Though Zacharias and Elizabeth “were both righteous before God,” “they had no child.” “Elizabeth was barren.”

In that day, to be “barren” would be seen as a great disappointment. It would even be seen by some as a judgment of God or a curse upon her life or their home. Elizabeth herself called her barrenness a “reproach among people” (v. 25). She had carried her “reproach” for a long time, because now she and her husband “were both well advanced in years.”

Yet at least at some time or for season through those long years, Zacharias had prayed for a son (v. 13). And the story of the Gospel of Luke begins with “an angel of the Lord” coming to Zacharias as he offered up his prayers at “the alter of incense,” announcing to him, “Your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John” (v. 11-13).

How often we give up on our prayers. How often human hearts, right up to the present day, belittle “our hopes and prayers” or mock “our thoughts and prayers” as if they have no meaning, no effect. Hopes and thoughts and prayers are foolishness to the world, a waste of time, just an excuse for inaction or empty expressions of helplessness.

But You heard Zacharias’ prayers. You saw Elizabeth’s reproach. And You sent Your word; You sent Your angel of the Lord, to speak a word of promise for what was to come. You would turn their sorrow into joy, their reproach into honor. Their names would be remembered forever, forever sealed in Scripture and in the story of Jesus -- not as a symbol of the curse of God or the reproach of people, but as a symbol of hope and faith and the provision of the God who sees and answers, despite the delay of time and impossibility of the circumstances. As the angel of the Lord declared, “You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice” at the birth of your son! (v. 14)

I’m reminded of another prophecy that speaks of Your heart and Your power to turn despair into joy and reproach into honor from the words of the Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 54:

“Sing, O barren,

You who have not borne!

Break forth into singing, and cry aloud,

You who have not labored with child!

For more are the children of the desolate

Than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord.

“Enlarge the place of your tent,

And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings;

Do not spare;

Lengthen your cords,

And strengthen your stakes.

For you shall expand to the right and to the left,

And your descendants will inherit the nations,

And make the desolate cities inhabited.

“Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed;

Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame;

For you will forget the shame of your youth,

And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore.

For your Maker is your husband,

The Lord of hosts is His name;

And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;

He is called the God of the whole earth.

For the Lord has called you

Like a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit,

Like a youthful wife when you were refused,”

Says your God.

“For a mere moment I have forsaken you,

But with great mercies I will gather you.

With a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment;

But with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you,”

Says the Lord, your Redeemer” (Isaiah 54:1-8).

You are our Redeemer. You are the God who sees us, who hears us, who answers us. You’re the God who turns our shame into praise and our hope deferred into answered prayers. You give us grace to overcome the waiting and doubting. And You answer according to Your perfect timing and in Your perfect way according to Your perfect plans.

In many ways, the story of Zacharias and Elizabeth, here at the beginning of the story of Jesus, is a prophetic picture of seasons of our journey and our story with Jesus as well. Let hope arise in our hearts, trusting our God who redeems, in this season of preparation for the coming of Christ. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with hope, trusting in our God who redeems all things in His perfect timing, His perfect way, for His perfect plans, in Jesus' name. God bless you!
