Morning by Morning, April 10, 2025 - The “Donkey” the Lord “Needs” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Savior of the world, Savior of my soul, be Lord and Savior of all that I am and all that I’ll do today. ... “Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, (Jesus) sent two of His disciples; and He said to them, ‘Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a (young donkey) tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.’ “So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. But some of those who stood there said to them, ‘What are you doing, loosing the colt?’ “And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Blessed is the kingdom of our father David That comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!’” (Mark 11:1-10) What could God ever need? What could You ever “have need of?” How could the Lord have need of anything? Whether in the heavens as our Creator or on earth as Immanuel, God with us, as our Savior, in the likeness of the human flesh and blood of Your incarnation, what could You “need” that You don’t already have? You are all-sufficient, all-knowing, all-powerful. You are our “All in All” (1 Corinthians 15:28; Ephesians 1:23). And yet, at the same time, the Word of God says You were in “need” of this colt, a young donkey, for Your triumphal, yet humble, entry into Jerusalem for the holy week before Your crucifixion and resurrection. Centuries before, by the Spirit of God, Zechariah had prophesied of this joyful day that Messiah would come riding into Jerusalem: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey (Zechariah 9:9). Though this Word was prophesied and pre-ordained by God, there was yet a part to be fulfilled by man. You had need of a donkey; and You had need of the obedience of Your disciples to go and get it and bring it You, that the prophecies and promises of God would be fulfilled. It’s the same for us today. It’s Your will that none should perish, but that all would turn to You in repentance and faith to believe and embrace Your mercy and love (2 Peter 3:9; 2 Timothy 2:25). You’ve made provision for the salvation of all through Your sacrifice at the cross and resurrection in glory at the hand of our Father (John 3:16). Yet each one must choose to receive the gift of God You’ve provided for all, that each one may be saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8), that all who believe in their heart and confess with their mouth that God our Father raised Jesus our Savior from the dead will be saved (Romans 10:9). And at the same time, You extend Your glorious, gracious invitation of mercy and love through us. This in part of Your plan is to be fulfilled in obedience by us as Your disciples, as Your ambassadors. “So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20). In this sense, You have chosen in Your sovereignty to be in “need” of us, in this way—“needing” us to be obedient to You to go and share this good news of Your mercy and love. “For ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him? And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, ‘How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!’” (Romans 10:13-15 NLT) Here I am, Lord; send me (Isaiah 6:8). Just like that young donkey You had “need” of, let me be Your “donkey,” Your disciple, one of Your ambassadors to go and share with others what You’ve done in me. Anoint me, empower me, send me to be one of Your messengers of Your good news (Matthew 28:19). I’m happy to go and fetch Your donkey. I’d be happy to go and be Your donkey, to carry You and the good news of Your mercy and love to all who desperately need to know You and Your love for them. You’ve done Your part. Now, in the power of Your grace, may I be found faithful to do mine. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, April 8, 2025 - “Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let Your words of spirit and life saturate my soul and set me on the path of Your will for my life today. ... “On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to (Jesus), ‘Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.’ “And He said to them, ‘Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’ Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing. See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (Luke 13:31-35) Your heart was to heal the broken and free the bound, to bring the good news of the kingdom of God to all who would hear (Luke 4:18-21). But not all would hear. In their power and pride, in their self-righteousness and legalism, they hardened their hearts against Your words of spirit and life, blaspheming the Spirit of God and rejecting the Author of Life (Matthew 12:31). Yet even though You saw with sadness their suffering and the destruction to come as Jerusalem would reject her Messiah, You also spoke a word of hope. A day would come when they would see You again. And on that day, Jerusalem would look up to You and speak out from her heart, “Blessed is the He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Your Word also prophesied long before Your first coming of Your second coming, foreseeing Your rejection by Your people at first, but also followed by Your redemption of Your people in the end: “And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour out a spirit of compassion and supplication on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that, when they look on the One whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over Him, as one weeps over a firstborn.... On that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity” (Zechariah 12:9-13:1) Thank You for Your heart of mercy for me and for us all. Thank You for Your heart of mercy even for any whose hearts are hardened in self-centered, self-sufficient pride to reject the One who loves them so. According to Your Word, Your heart is to never give up. Your love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8). Your steadfast love never ceases and Your mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; for great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23). You’re the God “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). You’re the God who’s “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). You’re the God who declares in Your love for all the people of all the world, “that whosoever believes in (You) should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). These are Your Word declaring Your will. It’s hard to comprehend just how far Your mercy reaches to all who would turn to You in humility and faith. But I join in agreement with Your will to be worked out in ways we can’t even imagine in the mercy and love and grace of God through Jesus Christ. I pray for Jerusalem to receive her Messiah. In the same way, I pray for the people of this world who have been blinded to the truth of Your mercy and love to be set free to see how good You are and embrace Your Good News of the Kingdom of God available to all (2 Corinthians 4:4). And I look forward to the day when even the hearts of the people of Jerusalem will turn to You and say, “Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.” This is the peace I pray for Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6). This is “the One who comes in the name of the Lord”—the One who is Jerusalem’s and all the world’s “Prince of Peace” who is ready to be received and embraced by all (Isaiah 9:6). In the power of Your grace, in mystery of faith and the sovereignty of God, let Your Word be fulfilled: “All Israel will be saved.... And this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins” (Romans 11:26-27). And let Your Message of hope and Your Words of spirit and life fill my heart and the heart of my world today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, April 7, 2025 - Determined for Destiny on the Way to the Cross Good morning, Lord Jesus. Where You lead, I will follow, as best as I can and all by Your grace. ... “When the days drew near for (Jesus) to be taken up, He set His face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51). You knew in Your heart it was time to die. The Child of Bethlehem had grown to become the Sacrifice of Calvary. You had “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:25 NKJV). And now You were determined for Your destiny, confidently and resolutely secure in Your identity as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). You were the Beloved Son, in whom the Father was well pleased (Matthew 3:17). You heard in Your heart what the Father was saying and saw with the eyes of Your spirit what the Father was doing. And though You knew all You must endure, You also knew that the judgment of man and the schemes of Satan would not stand. So You set Your face like flint to go up to Jerusalem, trusting the ultimate vindication of God: “The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; He who vindicates me is near” (Isaiah 50:7-8). Death couldn’t overcome You. Hell couldn’t hold You. “But God raised (You) up, having freed (You) from death, because it was impossible for (You) to be held in its power. For David says concerning (You), ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for He is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh will live in hope. For You will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let Your Holy One experience corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence’” (Acts 2:24-28). With Your Spirit abiding in me, give me humility to listen to hear and look to see what You are doing in my life. Give me the determination of spirit to be resolute and uncompromising in the knowledge of my identity and the fulfillment of my destiny. For the sake of the joy that was set before You, You endured and overcame all that came against You for the glory of our Father (Hebrews 12:2). Lord, let it be so in me, as I seek to follow You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, April 3, 2025 - “Crowning Glory and Ultimate Delight”

 

Morning by Morning, April 3, 2025 - “Crowning Glory and Ultimate Delight” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart, as I seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit. ... I’m so grateful for the chance to fly out to Florida to see my granddaughters, Alice and Abigail, for these quick few days. And of course, they are on my mind this morning, even as I slip away for these moments of prayer: “Children’s children are the crown of old men, And the glory of children is their father” (Proverbs 17:6). As The Voice version of this Scripture puts it: “Grandchildren are the crowning glory and ultimate delight of old age,     and parents are the pride of their children.” Yes, Lord. What an “ultimate delight” they are! So full of life and joy. As I sit on the floor with Abigail, just turning three months old, her two-year-old big sister, Alice, runs endless circles around us with arms stretched wide playing airplane. What a “crown” of joy I get to wear today! And I’m “old man” enough at my sixty-third year of this journey of life to know not to take these kinds of moments for granted. But wise enough to soak in the moment and embrace a good day on the journey with my children and their children. Even as some current challenges with another of my children never quite leaves my mind and my prayers, right here, right now today, I’m thankful to stay and rest here in this moment in “the crowning glory” and “ultimate delight” You’ve so graciously gifted to me, my Lord. This morning in these moments before I get back to my grandfatherly delights, I’m embracing the blessing You speak upon us and our children and their children and their children: “The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today.
