Morning by Morning, April 16, 2025 - All Were “Made to Stumble” Good morning, Lord Jesus. I look to You and seek to follow You on the journey through this Holy Week, remembering Your passion and Your sacrifice, while looking forward to celebrating Your resurrection. ... “Then Jesus said to them, ‘All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered.’ “But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.’ “Peter said to Him, ‘Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.’ “Jesus said to him, ‘Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.’ “But he spoke more vehemently, ‘If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!’ “And they all said likewise” (Mark 14:27-31). On that night, when You gathered with Your first disciples for that Passover Meal at the Last Supper to share the Lord’s Supper with them, You knew they would be “made to stumble.” And they did. “They all forsook (You) and fled” (Mark 15:40). They were all “made to stumble.” That’s the phrase that stands out to me this morning, as I read these familiar words of the story of that evening again—“made to stumble.” I think I’ve always thought of it as “they stumbled” or “they failed to be faithful” or “they were afraid and fled” in the hour You needed them most. But here in the account of the Gospel of Mark, Your Word makes it clear, more precise, what actually happened in the hearts of Your disciples. They were “made to stumble.” Yes, they were responsible for their choices, just as we all are. But at the same time, something influenced their choices, something got to their heads, something moved in their hearts, taking advantage of the weakness of their flesh in whatever opportunity it had. Just as “Satan entered (Judas Iscariot)” to betray You (John 13:27), so that same type of spirit of betrayal, abandonment, fear, and intimidation must have entered the thoughts of Peter and the others so that they were each “made to stumble.” Though Peter declared he never would, he did, three times, just as You said (Luke 22:54-62). He was subject to the same influence, subject to the same spiritual “thief” who comes “to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10). And there but for the grace of God, go I, go each one of us. That same thief wants every one of us who are called by Your name, seeking to follow You, to be “made to stumble.” So even when we have You in our hearts, when we have Your Spirit moving in our lives, we are always desperately needing Your grace. “Grace upon grace” (John 1:16). Always taking us deeper and deeper, “from faith to faith” (Romans 1:17). Always growing us in our security in You, our trust in You, our faithfulness to You. The power of Your grace is our only defense, our only hope, against the enemy of our souls forever seeking to make us stumble, make us fall, make us fail and retreat, rather than hold firm and move forward in our unfailing love and commitment to You. But now we have Your Holy Spirit abiding in us, empowering us, strengthening us to “stand” and “withstand in the evil day” when the enemy comes to make us stumble (Ephesians 6:13). Now, “He who is in (us) is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4.4). Now, instead of being “made to stumble,” Your Spirit make us to “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might”—all by the power of the grace of God at work within us (Ephesians 6:10). Thank You for making me strong in the power of Your might and empowering me by Your grace whenever the enemy of my soul tries to make me stumble. In humility I know I desperately need You, that apart from You I can do nothing, that apart from You I wouldn’t stand a chance to stand against my enemy coming to steal and kill and destroy in my life and in my relationship with You (John 15:5). And in faith I know I never have to be apart from You, that You are with me “always” (Matthew 28:20), abiding in me as I abide in You (John 15:4), overcoming my accuser, who would try to make me stumble by the Blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony (Revelation 11:12). By the power of Your grace, may I always overcome in You! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, April 15 - The Lord’s Supper and Passover Meal: “This is My Body.... This is My Blood.” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be high and lifted up here in my heart and in every moment of my day. ... During the week of Passover during the Holy Week between Your Triumphal entry into Jerusalem and Your Crucifixion on the Cross, followed by Your Resurrection from the Empty Tomb, You took time to share the Passover Meal with Your first disciples: “In the evening (Jesus) came with the twelve. Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.’ “And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, ‘Is it I?’ And another said, ‘Is it I?’ “He answered and said to them, ‘It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.’ “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My body.’ “Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, ‘This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’ “And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives” (Mark 14:17-26). We call this Passover Meal “The Lord’s Supper.” As You took the bread, You declared, “This is My body.” As You took the cup, You declared, “This is My blood.” It’s a mystery and it’s much debated about what You meant by those words. But as we remember today that night in which You were betrayed, we know at least this much, according to the Word of God: “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread” (1 Corinthians 10:16-17). When we remember, when we partake, with humble hearts and expectant faith, we participate in a “communion” with Your blood and a “communion” with Your body according to Your Word. This mystery of faith is a means of Your grace, means of our joining with You, communion with You, deep intimacy with You, where in some way can experience the Living Presence of the Living Christ—the One who was crucified, dead, and buried, yet lives in us. “Christ in (us), the hope of glory!” (Colossians 1:27) In this union of Your Spirit abiding in us as we abide in You, we are “the body of Christ, and members individually” (1 Corinthians 12:27). It’s a holy communion, a spiritual fellowship, with You and with one another that we cannot fully comprehend, but we can fully embrace. May we never take it for granted. May we never allow it to become a lifeless ritual, but an eternal reminder of our eternal bond with You and with one another. “We, though many, are one” in You (1 Corinthians 10:17). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, April 14, 2025 - Preparing for Passover with Jesus Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill me with Your Spirit as I follow You in Your Word through this Holy Week on Your way to the Cross of Crucifixion and the Empty Tomb of Resurrection. ... This Year the days of Holy Week between Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday on our contemporary calendar overlap with the days of Passover on the biblical calendar. And just as You’ve been speaking into my spirit of preparing for Resurrection, I also sense You speaking in my heart this morning of preparing for Passover, reminding me of this spiritual journey in Your Word: “Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. And (Jesus) sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.’ “So they said to Him, ‘Where do You want us to prepare?’ “And He said to them, ‘Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters.’ Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, ‘Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.’ “So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover” (Luke 22:7-13).   The Words of Scriptures of the Old Covenant, every biblical feast, all the Law and the Prophets, all point to You, all are ultimately fulfilled in You (Matthew 5:17; Luke 24:27). As so, the event, the details, and the rituals of the Passover speak of You and are fulfilled in You. “For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us” (1 Corinthians 5:7). You are “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Passover is more than an event of the past, more than a week on the biblical calendar. Passover is also a living, intimate encounter with You every moment of our lives. By the power of Your blood, sin and death passes over us and all who humble themselves to trust in You and turn to You as their Lord and Savior.   I thank You for the sacrifice and the power of Your blood. I thank You for all You have done for us. As I remember the first Passover, when the Angel of Death passed over the children of Israel in the land of Egypt because of the blood of the lamb applied to the doorposts and lintel of their houses, I remember that sin and death passes over me by the power of Your Blood, the Blood of the Lamb, as I trust in You, my Lord and my Savior (Exodus 12:1-28).   “Through (Jesus Christ) God was pleased to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:20). As You said, “Unless you repent, you will all perish” (Luke 13:5). But “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13). “The Lord is patient toward (us), not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).   Today I prepare my heart for Passover­ not just to remember and celebrate an event that happened long ago—whether the supper of unleavened bread in Egypt or whether the Last Supper You shared with Your disciples in Jerusalem during that Holy Week on Your way to the cross. But I prepare my heart for a fresh encounter with You right here, right now today—a living, intimate encounter with You in every moment of every day of my life. Because of Your eternal sacrifice as the Lamb of God, my sin is forever forgiven; and now You are with me always (Matthew 28:20). Praise You, Lord Jesus, for Your eternal sacrifice. And for Your glorious resurrection. And for the amazing grace of Your invitation to me and to all to come encounter You and celebrate You and all You’ve done for us. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Morning by Morning, April 11, 2025 - Overturn the Tables in My House of Prayer Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart, as You align my spirit with Your Spirit here in the communion of prayer to begin my day centered in You. ... “Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, ‘It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves’” (Matthew 21:12-13). As soon as You entered Jerusalem in deep humility on “the foal of a donkey” You boldly entered the temple with a stirring passion for the purity of the place of worship. The house of prayer had become a house of thieves; the place of purity and become a place of depravity. And before I’m too quick to condemn these who compromised with the plans and purposes of God in the very places that were to be set aside to worship You the Lord our God alone in spirit and truth, search my heart, Holy Spirit. “Search me, O God, and know my heart.... And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24). Where have I compromised? How have I allowed my spirit to be defiled with the passions and pursuits of my thoughts and desires in the places of my heart that are to be dedicated, consecrated, set apart, and keep holy for You as I worship You alone. As You said long ago, You still speak today of those who will drive out what cannot remain in a heart wholly given to You as a house of prayer in purity and passion in communion with God: “The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23-24). Holy Spirit of the Living God, overturn the tables of everything in me that’s less than holiness of heart and life. Drive out of my heart everything that’s less than Your calling and command for my heart to be Your house of prayer. Grant me a stirring passion for purity in my worship and prayer. Empower me by Your mercy and grace to come to the place, more and more every day, to experience the fulfillment of Your desire for every one of us who would follow You as Your disciples: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). Lord, let it be so in me, this day and every day—step by step, deep unto deep, morning by morning, one day at a time, right now and for the rest of my life on my spiritual journey of ever-increasing trust and intimacy with You. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with (us) all” (2 Corinthians 13:14). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today.
