Morning by Morning, April 14, 2025 - Preparing for Passover with Jesus Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill me with Your Spirit as I follow You in Your Word through this Holy Week on Your way to the Cross of Crucifixion and the Empty Tomb of Resurrection. ... This Year the days of Holy Week between Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday on our contemporary calendar overlap with the days of Passover on the biblical calendar. And just as You’ve been speaking into my spirit of preparing for Resurrection, I also sense You speaking in my heart this morning of preparing for Passover, reminding me of this spiritual journey in Your Word: “Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed. And (Jesus) sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.’ “So they said to Him, ‘Where do You want us to prepare?’ “And He said to them, ‘Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters.’ Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, ‘Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.’ “So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover” (Luke 22:7-13).   The Words of Scriptures of the Old Covenant, every biblical feast, all the Law and the Prophets, all point to You, all are ultimately fulfilled in You (Matthew 5:17; Luke 24:27). As so, the event, the details, and the rituals of the Passover speak of You and are fulfilled in You. “For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us” (1 Corinthians 5:7). You are “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Passover is more than an event of the past, more than a week on the biblical calendar. Passover is also a living, intimate encounter with You every moment of our lives. By the power of Your blood, sin and death passes over us and all who humble themselves to trust in You and turn to You as their Lord and Savior.   I thank You for the sacrifice and the power of Your blood. I thank You for all You have done for us. As I remember the first Passover, when the Angel of Death passed over the children of Israel in the land of Egypt because of the blood of the lamb applied to the doorposts and lintel of their houses, I remember that sin and death passes over me by the power of Your Blood, the Blood of the Lamb, as I trust in You, my Lord and my Savior (Exodus 12:1-28).   “Through (Jesus Christ) God was pleased to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:20). As You said, “Unless you repent, you will all perish” (Luke 13:5). But “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13). “The Lord is patient toward (us), not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).   Today I prepare my heart for Passover­ not just to remember and celebrate an event that happened long ago—whether the supper of unleavened bread in Egypt or whether the Last Supper You shared with Your disciples in Jerusalem during that Holy Week on Your way to the cross. But I prepare my heart for a fresh encounter with You right here, right now today—a living, intimate encounter with You in every moment of every day of my life. Because of Your eternal sacrifice as the Lamb of God, my sin is forever forgiven; and now You are with me always (Matthew 28:20). Praise You, Lord Jesus, for Your eternal sacrifice. And for Your glorious resurrection. And for the amazing grace of Your invitation to me and to all to come encounter You and celebrate You and all You’ve done for us. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Morning by Morning, April 11, 2025 - Overturn the Tables in My House of Prayer Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart, as You align my spirit with Your Spirit here in the communion of prayer to begin my day centered in You. ... “Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them, ‘It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves’” (Matthew 21:12-13). As soon as You entered Jerusalem in deep humility on “the foal of a donkey” You boldly entered the temple with a stirring passion for the purity of the place of worship. The house of prayer had become a house of thieves; the place of purity and become a place of depravity. And before I’m too quick to condemn these who compromised with the plans and purposes of God in the very places that were to be set aside to worship You the Lord our God alone in spirit and truth, search my heart, Holy Spirit. “Search me, O God, and know my heart.... And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24). Where have I compromised? How have I allowed my spirit to be defiled with the passions and pursuits of my thoughts and desires in the places of my heart that are to be dedicated, consecrated, set apart, and keep holy for You as I worship You alone. As You said long ago, You still speak today of those who will drive out what cannot remain in a heart wholly given to You as a house of prayer in purity and passion in communion with God: “The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23-24). Holy Spirit of the Living God, overturn the tables of everything in me that’s less than holiness of heart and life. Drive out of my heart everything that’s less than Your calling and command for my heart to be Your house of prayer. Grant me a stirring passion for purity in my worship and prayer. Empower me by Your mercy and grace to come to the place, more and more every day, to experience the fulfillment of Your desire for every one of us who would follow You as Your disciples: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). Lord, let it be so in me, this day and every day—step by step, deep unto deep, morning by morning, one day at a time, right now and for the rest of my life on my spiritual journey of ever-increasing trust and intimacy with You. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with (us) all” (2 Corinthians 13:14). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, April 10, 2025 - The “Donkey” the Lord “Needs” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Savior of the world, Savior of my soul, be Lord and Savior of all that I am and all that I’ll do today. ... “Now when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, (Jesus) sent two of His disciples; and He said to them, ‘Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it you will find a (young donkey) tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.’ “So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. But some of those who stood there said to them, ‘What are you doing, loosing the colt?’ “And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So they let them go. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Blessed is the kingdom of our father David That comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!’” (Mark 11:1-10) What could God ever need? What could You ever “have need of?” How could the Lord have need of anything? Whether in the heavens as our Creator or on earth as Immanuel, God with us, as our Savior, in the likeness of the human flesh and blood of Your incarnation, what could You “need” that You don’t already have? You are all-sufficient, all-knowing, all-powerful. You are our “All in All” (1 Corinthians 15:28; Ephesians 1:23). And yet, at the same time, the Word of God says You were in “need” of this colt, a young donkey, for Your triumphal, yet humble, entry into Jerusalem for the holy week before Your crucifixion and resurrection. Centuries before, by the Spirit of God, Zechariah had prophesied of this joyful day that Messiah would come riding into Jerusalem: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey (Zechariah 9:9). Though this Word was prophesied and pre-ordained by God, there was yet a part to be fulfilled by man. You had need of a donkey; and You had need of the obedience of Your disciples to go and get it and bring it You, that the prophecies and promises of God would be fulfilled. It’s the same for us today. It’s Your will that none should perish, but that all would turn to You in repentance and faith to believe and embrace Your mercy and love (2 Peter 3:9; 2 Timothy 2:25). You’ve made provision for the salvation of all through Your sacrifice at the cross and resurrection in glory at the hand of our Father (John 3:16). Yet each one must choose to receive the gift of God You’ve provided for all, that each one may be saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8), that all who believe in their heart and confess with their mouth that God our Father raised Jesus our Savior from the dead will be saved (Romans 10:9). And at the same time, You extend Your glorious, gracious invitation of mercy and love through us. This in part of Your plan is to be fulfilled in obedience by us as Your disciples, as Your ambassadors. “So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20). In this sense, You have chosen in Your sovereignty to be in “need” of us, in this way—“needing” us to be obedient to You to go and share this good news of Your mercy and love. “For ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ But how can they call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him? And how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him? And how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, ‘How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!’” (Romans 10:13-15 NLT) Here I am, Lord; send me (Isaiah 6:8). Just like that young donkey You had “need” of, let me be Your “donkey,” Your disciple, one of Your ambassadors to go and share with others what You’ve done in me. Anoint me, empower me, send me to be one of Your messengers of Your good news (Matthew 28:19). I’m happy to go and fetch Your donkey. I’d be happy to go and be Your donkey, to carry You and the good news of Your mercy and love to all who desperately need to know You and Your love for them. You’ve done Your part. Now, in the power of Your grace, may I be found faithful to do mine. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, April 8, 2025 - “Blessed is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let Your words of spirit and life saturate my soul and set me on the path of Your will for my life today. ... “On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to (Jesus), ‘Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.’ “And He said to them, ‘Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’ Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing. See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (Luke 13:31-35) Your heart was to heal the broken and free the bound, to bring the good news of the kingdom of God to all who would hear (Luke 4:18-21). But not all would hear. In their power and pride, in their self-righteousness and legalism, they hardened their hearts against Your words of spirit and life, blaspheming the Spirit of God and rejecting the Author of Life (Matthew 12:31). Yet even though You saw with sadness their suffering and the destruction to come as Jerusalem would reject her Messiah, You also spoke a word of hope. A day would come when they would see You again. And on that day, Jerusalem would look up to You and speak out from her heart, “Blessed is the He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Your Word also prophesied long before Your first coming of Your second coming, foreseeing Your rejection by Your people at first, but also followed by Your redemption of Your people in the end: “And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour out a spirit of compassion and supplication on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that, when they look on the One whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over Him, as one weeps over a firstborn.... On that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity” (Zechariah 12:9-13:1) Thank You for Your heart of mercy for me and for us all. Thank You for Your heart of mercy even for any whose hearts are hardened in self-centered, self-sufficient pride to reject the One who loves them so. According to Your Word, Your heart is to never give up. Your love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8). Your steadfast love never ceases and Your mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; for great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23). You’re the God “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). You’re the God who’s “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). You’re the God who declares in Your love for all the people of all the world, “that whosoever believes in (You) should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). These are Your Word declaring Your will. It’s hard to comprehend just how far Your mercy reaches to all who would turn to You in humility and faith. But I join in agreement with Your will to be worked out in ways we can’t even imagine in the mercy and love and grace of God through Jesus Christ. I pray for Jerusalem to receive her Messiah. In the same way, I pray for the people of this world who have been blinded to the truth of Your mercy and love to be set free to see how good You are and embrace Your Good News of the Kingdom of God available to all (2 Corinthians 4:4). And I look forward to the day when even the hearts of the people of Jerusalem will turn to You and say, “Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.” This is the peace I pray for Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6). This is “the One who comes in the name of the Lord”—the One who is Jerusalem’s and all the world’s “Prince of Peace” who is ready to be received and embraced by all (Isaiah 9:6). In the power of Your grace, in mystery of faith and the sovereignty of God, let Your Word be fulfilled: “All Israel will be saved.... And this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins” (Romans 11:26-27). And let Your Message of hope and Your Words of spirit and life fill my heart and the heart of my world today.
