Jesus Wept Over Jerusalem, but Also with Hope for a Time to Come - April 4, 2023

Morning by Morning, April 4 - Jesus Wept Over Jerusalem, but Also with Hope for a Time to Come

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and every moment of my day. ...

One day the crowds welcomed You with shouts of joy into Jerusalem. Another day soon to come they would cry out with shouts of anger to crucify You outside the gates of that same city. And what comes to mind this morning is the mournful cry of Your heart over that city in between those two days:

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (Matthew 23:37-39).

The hardened heart of Israel broke Your heart. And today, every hardened heart that doesn’t understand the depths of Your love or the eternal cost of Your sacrifice or the power of Your grace in the mercy of Your love to change their lives now and for all eternity continues to break Your heart.

And if we have Your heart and mind, if we are the Body of Christ in this world with the Spirit of Christ filling our hearts, that should break our hearts too. That should move us in prayer over our cities and move us in action to share the hope that’s in us, flowing out our hearts that are fully surrendered to You.

Come, Holy Spirit. Give me the heart of Jesus for my city, for this generation in my world. Only Jesus has the power to change desolate lives and replace that with living hope.

During this Holy Week when more people are thinking about Jesus, when the world wonders why there’s such a world-wide movement that’s lasted for centuries, even for two thousand years of followers of Jesus, I pray for hearts to be turned to You. And I pray for that myself and all Your disciples will reach out to hearts that can be opened to You.

Even for Israel who could not see You in their day and missed their day of visitation, You spoke a word of hope: “You shall see Me no more till you, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (v. 39). The word “till” means there will come a day when Israel will see You, when Israel shall cry out, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” That will be a fulfillment of many prophecies one day, including the Prophecy of Zechariah:

“And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn” (Zechariah 12:10).

And one day even the Prophecy of the Apostle Paul, who carried Your passion for Jerusalem and all of Israel, will be fulfilled:

“For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:

‘The Deliverer will come out of Zion,

And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;

For this is My covenant with them,

When I take away their sins’” (Romans 11:25-27)

It’s hard for us the grasp Your heart and Your eternal perspective and Your heart to “have mercy on all” (Romans 11:32). I know I don’t have it all figured out. But I see these things of both mourning and mercy, grief and hope, in Your words and Your cry over Jerusalem that day.

Let our mourning for what is broken lead us to joy for what will be healed, let our grieve for what is lost lead us to joy for what will be found. Let our sorrow and sadness over what is desolate and dead le us to a living hope for what will be filled with life -- resurrection life that we only have in Christ alone.

For every soul that we mourn over and pray over who’s presently hardened their hearts to Your mercy and love, let us pray with expectant faith for the day of their “till” -- “till” they see You and cry out to You and welcome You as the One who comes in the name of the Lord! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today. In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be moved to pray and cry out over your city and over all who don't yet know the love and mercy and grace of God through Jesus Christ that their hearts and eyes would opened to Him, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Knowing When to Turn the Tables and When to Turn the Other Cheek - April 3, 2023

Morning by Morning, April 3 - Knowing When to Turn the Tables and When to Turn the Other Cheek

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your leading. ...

On the journey to the Cross, during this Holy Week, I’m remembering the story of when You went into the courts of the temple and overturned the tables of the money changers and drove them out with a whip, told in all four Gospels:

“In the temple courts (Jesus) found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So He made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle;

he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, ‘Get these out of here! Stop turning My Father’s house into a market!’” (John 2:14-16).

“He said to them, ‘It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers!’” (Matthew 21:13)

You never sinned, yet You did express Your anger. As Your Word calls us and cautions us, we’re to express our anger, yet without sinning in our anger. “Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil” (Ephesians 4:26-27).

Some things should make us angry. And some things should lead us to take action. But as we follow in Your steps and walk in Your ways, how are we to know when to turn the other cheek and when to turn over the tables? It’s only by seeking to live in communion with You and surrender to the leading of Your Spirit in all we do and say. “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” (Romans 8:14).

Even when we’re angry, even when we’re led to take action, give us grace to release our anger to You so we can then act and speak by the leading of Your Spirit. Get the money changers and robbers out of the temples of our hearts, so we can truly sense the leading of Your Spirit instead of the tempting of our flesh, acting out the righteous anger of God rather than the unrighteous anger of man. For our temple is not a place made of stone on a mountain, but a place prepared for Your Presence in our hearts. “For God’s temple is holy, and (we) are that temple” (1 Corinthians 3:16). “(Our) body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within (us), which (we) have from God, and (we) are not (our) own” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

The expression of Your emotions and the courage of Your convictions were part of what led to Your crucifixion. There were consequences for Your courage. And there will be consequences for ours. “A disciple is not above the teacher” (Matthew 10:24). As You said, “If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20). But You stand with us, as we stand in You, through whatever we encounter and endure as we take up our own cross daily to follow You (Luke 9:23).

Come fill the temple of my heart with the Holy Spirit of Your Presence, Lord. Get everything out of me that’s not yet like You. And give me humility to listen for Your leading and courage to act at Your command. Align my heart with Your heart, my thoughts with Your thoughts, in all my actions and my emotions out of the place of abiding communion with You, for “anyone united to the Lord become one spirit with Him” (1 Corinthians 6:17). And in that way, my temple will by Your house of prayer and my life will be an expression of Your heart. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

My friend, may you be filled with the Holy Spirit in the temple of your know, knowing when to turn the tables and when to turn the other check, as you take up your cross and follow Jesus on your journey of resurrection life in Him each day, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Resurrection Life in Christ through Crucifixion Death to Ourselves Apart from Him - March 31, 2023

Morning by Morning, March 31 - Resurrection Life in Christ through Crucifixion Death to Ourselves Apart from Him

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your voice (John 10:3) to follow the leading of Your Spirit (Romans 8:14) and follow in Your steps throughout the journey of my day (1 Peter 2:21). ...

As I watch and wait to listen for Your leading, what comes to my heart, rising up from my spirit to my mind, is this:

“Will you follow Me? ... Will you walk in My steps? ... The journey to resurrection goes through the suffering of crucifixion. Not the suffering of sickness or sadness as if I were the source of those things, but the suffering of dying to yourself, dying to everything in you that would resist Me and My will and My way for your life. It is dying to depending upon yourself and your wisdom and strength apart from Mine. It’s when you truly die to yourself that you can truly live life in Me and allow Me to live My life through you. This is the resurrection life I have for you and for all who embrace this journey of crucifixion of trying to live life in themselves apart from Me.” ...

Yes, Lord. ... As I test these spoken words in my heart with Your written Word of Scripture, these come immediately to mind:

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5).

“Then (Jesus) said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me’” (Luke 9:23).

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor” (John 12:24-26).

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).

“I die daily” (1 Corinthians 15:31).

And finally this Passage of Your Word, so full of practical principles of daily steps in dying to self and living in Christ as we allow You to live in us:

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

“Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.

“But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long-suffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:1-17).

Yes, Lord. I do believe I’m hearing Your voice in my heart. And I pray for Your grace to live in You and die to any part of myself that seeks to live apart from You and Your will and Your way in my life. By the grace of God, I choose the resurrection life You offer me, as I seek to die to myself and take up my cross and follow You -- morning by morning, day by day, step by step on my journey with You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

My friend, may you embrace the resurrection life of Christ in you as you die daily to every part of yourself tempted to try to live apart from Him and seek to live daily in Him by the power of His grace in you, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Jesus “Set His Face” Toward the Suffering of the Cross for Us - March 30 2023

Morning by Morning, March 30 - Jesus “Set His Face” Toward the Suffering of the Cross for Us

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Take me by the heart and lead me by Your hand into all You have for me today -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...

“Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem” (Luke 9:51).

No holding back. No distractions. No retreat.

You knew in Your heart what was set before You in Jerusalem. As the old hymn expresses so well:

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross

The emblem of suffering and shame.

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain.

But You were determined to go. Just as the Prophet Isaiah had declared nearly eight hundred years before of You and Your heart of determination that day:

“The Lord God has opened My ear;

And I was not rebellious,

Nor did I turn away.

I gave My back to those who struck Me,

And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;

I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

‘For the Lord God will help Me;

Therefore I will not be disgraced;

Therefore I have set My face like a flint,

And I know that I will not be ashamed” (Isaiah 50:5-7)

No one took Your life from You. You willing laid down Your life for us, in obedience to the Father by the power of the Holy Spirit on behalf of every soul that our sins could be forgiven and our lives could be full and fulfilled in You for all eternity if we would trust in You and what You did for us. As You said:

“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father” (John 10:17-19).

You set Your face like flint toward Jerusalem, toward that old rugged cross, in determination, in obedience, and in love. You knew the cost, You knew the suffering -- not just the physical suffering of the scourging and crucifixion, not just the emotional suffering of the ridicule and mockery of rejection, but most of all the spiritual suffering that You would take upon Yourself all the sins of the world to be separated from the Father in that dimension of Your Being as the suffering Son of Man for us and all that would separate us from God in that moment You gave up Your spirit and poured out Your Blood and declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30).

Because You set Your face like flint to go the cross for us, we can determine by Your grace to set our face toward You. By the power of Your grace, only available to us through Your suffering and death and resurrection, we can embrace the calling and challenge of Your Word in the power of Your Spirit, surrounded by the faithful witness of the generations who have gone before us:

“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

Fill my heart with that determination today -- this day and every day -- to set my face toward You, just like You set Your face toward all You willingly suffered and endured for me. Let that bring You joy, that You may receive Your full reward of the joy that was set before You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

My friend, may you set your face toward Jesus and embrace all the grace He made available to you through the suffering of His cross, in Jesus' name. God bless you!
