Morning by Morning, April 8 - Sign of Total Eclipse in the Heavens Leading to Days of Total Repentance and Revival in Our Hearts Good morning, Lord Jesus. I look to You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- and welcome the Light of the Glory of Your Presence into my heart and every moment of my day. ... Today at our home in Texas, we’ll witness the much-anticipated total solar eclipse when the sun goes dark in the middle of the day. We’ll be taking time to look up in the sky and marvel at this rare event in the heavens. But at the same time, it reminds me of another time when the sun went dark in the middle of the day. It wasn’t a natural astrological event of the moon covering the sun of our world, but a supernatural spiritual event of the darkness of sin and death covering the Son of God as You took upon Yourself all the sins of the world in Your sacrifice of love for us at the cross: “It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, ‘Father, into your hands I commit My spirit.’ When He had said this, He breathed His last” (Luke 23:44-46). That event didn’t last three or four minutes, as ours will, but lasted for three hours. That was not a slender path of totality that crossed a nation, as ours will, but covered the whole land in total darkness. Your Word speaks of signs in the heavens that call our attention to Your activity on the earth: “God said, ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens … and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years’” (Genesis 1:14). As the “path of totality” of this total solar eclipse passes across our nation today from southwest to northeast, from Texas to Maine, may we see the beauty of Your creation in this rare form, but may we also heed any warning of Your Spirit to the heart of our nation, as exhorted by many prophetic voices of our nation, such as Chris Reed of MorningStar Ministries and others. Many have seen the event of a total eclipse throughout the occurrences of history as a spiritual warning of judgment, as when the sun is hidden in the sky speaking of times when the Son of God is hidden from the hearts of the people. Some say a solar eclipse passed over the land during the days when Your prophet Jonah preached Your call to repentance to the king and people of Nineveh, called the Assyrian Eclipse and recorded in their historical texts (see Jonah 3:3-4). The king and the people of Nineveh in Assyria repented and “turned from their evil ways, (and You) relented and did not bring on them the destruction (You) had threatened” (v.10). Many have noted that the “path of totality” of this total solar eclipse will pass over the cities of Nineveh, Texas, Nineveh, Ohio, Nineveh Indiana, Nineveh, Pennsylvania, and Nineveh, New York in America, as well as Nineveh, Nova Scotia in Canada. It will even pass over the city of Jonah, Texas. Some would say it’s a coincidence and others would say it’s a call to prayer and repentance as a sign in the heavens for our nation to return to its calling and identity as “one nation under God” as we “turn from (our) evil ways.” Eclipse or not, signs in the heavens or not, the invitation of Your Word and what many would call Your Covenant of Revival still stands as an invitation to the people of this land and every land to turn our hearts to You in repentance for revival, cleansing, and healing of our land: “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14). Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, move in our hearts and in the heart of our land. As darkness covers the sun, lets us also see the darkness that covers our souls and the soul of our nation so that the Son of God can arise again in our hearts in revival across our land! Sometimes it gets darker before it gets brighter, just like it got darker on the Good Friday of the cross when great darkness covered the whole land, but everything changed in the Light of Your Glory on that Resurrection Sunday! Lord turn our darkness into light, as the Light of Your Glory revealed in the Face of the Son of God fills our hearts and our land with Your praise (2 Corinthians 4:4). Let the dawning of that day come when “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea!” (Habakkuk 2:14) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
