“Do Not Be Afraid... Do Not Be Silent” but Be “Bold as a Lion.” - November 7, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 7 - “Do Not Be Afraid... Do Not Be Silent” but Be “Bold as a Lion.”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let Your light shine in my heart and through my life, as I start off my day looking to You, abiding in You, and seeking to follow You. ...

“And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, ‘Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are My people.’ And he stayed a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them” (Acts 18:9-11).

You gave Paul a vision to encourage him to keep standing up for what is right and to keep speaking out for what is true. You commanded him, “Do not be afraid. Do not be silent.” You reminded him You still had “many in this city who (were Your) people.”

Like Paul, we can get discouraged when we look around and don’t see anyone standing with us. We can get fearful when we listen around and don’t hear anyone speaking up with us. And we can be tempted give into the spirit of intimidation and consider yielding to its pressure to just sit back, shut up, and be silent.

Then fear wins. Then intimidation carries the day. Then -- even if there are many, even a majority, with the conviction of the people of God, moved by the conscience of the Spirit of God -- the vocal, intimidating, pressuring spirit of the world carries the day and the Kingdom of God fails to advance, as the people of God shrink back from the battle.

We need a vision, Lord Jesus. We need Your vision. We need You to fill our hearts with courage and fill our mouths with truth. We need You to make us more like You in our world, filled with Your Spirit in our hearts, displaying Your character through our lives.

Yes, in Your character, there were times when You modelled for us the character of Christ to be as silent as a sheep led to the slaughter that opens not its mouth (Isaiah 53:7). And at the same time, there were also times when You modelled for us the character of Christ to be bold and outspoken, fearless in the face of the ruling authorities, calling them out in their hypocrisy, like when You called them a “brood of vipers” to their face (Matthew 23:33) and boldly, brazenly attacking the growing culture that glorified the traditions of men contrary to the Word of God, when You turned over the tables in the temple and threw out the money-changers (Matthew 21:12).

All of this -- whether led to be silent in the moment or bold in the moment -- is the Character of Christ. All of this is seeking to hear what the Father is saying, see what the Father is doing, follow as the Spirit is leading, to be like Jesus in our world -- whether when we’re called to silence or when we’re called to speak, when we’re called to sit back and just pray or when we’re called to both passionately pray and to passionately act. As You are, so are we to be in our world (1 John 4:17), as Your salt and Your light and Your voice in our times (Matthew 5:13-16).

Yes, there are times when the vision of the Lord given to the people of God about who we are to be in the midst of our culture, our city, and our nation is to be much more vocal than silent, much more active than passive, much more bold than befuddled and bewildered. In fact, the Word of God tells us, “The righteous are bold as lion!” (Proverbs 28:1).

In the power of the Holy Spirit leading and inspiring Your first disciples in the spiritual and cultural battles of their day, when they were threatened and intimidated to be silent, they lifted their voices to You for You to empower their voices in their world. They passionately prayed:

“And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to Your servants to continue to speak Your word with all boldness, while You stretch out Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of Your holy servant Jesus!’ And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness!” (Acts 4:29-31)

And then they passionately acted. In their day, against what they faced, that was the character of Christ, that was alignment with the will of God, that was living out the expression of the fruit of the Holy Spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit in the mighty name and holy character of Jesus! That was the vision of Jesus You gave them! And I believe this is the vision You are giving us as Your disciples in our day.

We’re not the minority, but the majority. For in fact, even just one voice, with the Spirit of God in their heart, is a majority. And there are “many in this city” and many in this nation who are yet Your people. Open our ears to hear it. Awaken our faith to believe it. Open our eyes to see it. Just as You opened the eyes of the fearful servant of the faithful prophet Elisha to see the truth:

“When the servant of the man of God rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. And the servant said, ‘Alas, my master! What shall we do?’ He said, ‘Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha!” (2 Kings 6:15-17)

O Lord, open our eyes that we may see and be neither silent nor afraid! We are not alone. Many more are with us than are against us! When You opened the eyes of the servant, there was great victory in the battle for the land in Elisha’s day (2 Kings 6:23). And when You poured out Your Holy Spirit to give a bold voice to Your people in the days of the early Church, there were great victories in the hearts of people turning to God and turning their world upside down (Acts 17:6). Come turn our world, our nation, our communities upside down and right-side up again in our day, as Your people, having Your character lift their voice to be “bold as a lion” again! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be led by the Holy Spirit and live in the character of Christ, seeing what the Father is doing, hearing what the Father is saying, to be bold and active in your faith in these days, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

A Transition in Ministry for My Ordination with the United Methodist Church to the Global Methodist Church

Nearly 25 years ago I was ordained into full time ministry as an Elder in the United Methodist Church, after leaving my law practice and going to Asbury Seminary. Though not called to be a local church pastor, I have been serving by leading Messiah Ministries as an independent, non-denominational ministry in my appointment as an "Extension Ministry" serving "Beyond the Local Church." As you may know, after several decades of much discussion within the church about interpretation of Scripture and the Authority of Scripture involving many of the social principles of our day, the denomination is experiencing a split and division.

On Friday, November 4, 2022, I prayerfully chose, after seeking clear discernment, to officially transfer my ordination credentials from the United Methodist Church to the Global Methodist Church by withdrawing from the UMC and uniting with the GMC, which I believe aligns with my convictions of interpretation of Scripture and the value of the Authority of Scripture in our daily lives, discernment, and decisions. I will continue to lead Messiah Ministries, as an independent, non-denominational ministry. The vision and mission of the Global Methodist Church is "to make disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly."

Though this decision does not affect my leadership of Messiah Ministries, it is a significant decision in terms of my spiritual covering and accountability. In conveying my decision to the appropriate authorities of the UMC, I also expressed gratitude for these years of opportunity in ministry together and also asked to be released with a blessing in my transition. I was humbled and honored to receive this parting blessing from the Church Official in charge of these these matters, Rev. Mickey McCandless, the Conference Secretary of my conference of the UMC, with a copy to the Bishop and Administration:

Dear Tommy:

Grace to you. Your withdrawal from the Rio Texas Conference United Methodist Church to unite with the Global Methodist Church will be noted at the 2023 Annual Conference in the Business of the Annual Conference with an effective date of November 4, 2022. May you and your ministry continue to experience the power of the Holy Spirit. It has been a joy to serve with you these many years and I look forward to seeing and hearing of God’s on-going work through you.

Blessings in Christ, Mickey T. McCandless, Conference Secretary

I praise God for this blessing of good will, and as I expressed in my letter of withdrawal: "May the love of God continue to flow and the light of Christ continue to shine through all the Lord’s sons and daughters everywhere we are each called to serve, regardless of the particular streams and denominations of the Body of Christ."

Thank you for all your prayers, encouragement, and support of me and this ministry for all these years and for many more to come -- by the grace of God and for the glory of God!

“Morning in America Again.” Morning in Our World and Our Hearts Again. - November 4, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 4 - “Morning in America Again.” Morning in Our World and Our Hearts Again.

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind, Your desires in my heart, Your words in my mouth, as I seek to begin my day grounded in Your Word and filled with Your Spirit. ...

Right away, as I watch and wait to listen for the leading of Your Holy Spirit, I hear in my heart, “Hope will not disappoint us.” ...

And right away this Scripture comes to mind from Romans Chapter 5:

“Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” (Romans 5:1-5).

Right now, many are discouraged by what they see in our communities and in our nation -- no matter where they stand on the political spectrum, no matter where they stand in their personal views of the social issues of our day. And all are seeking hope, yearning with hope for a better day. Even the current President quoted the words of a past President from the opposing party the other day when President Biden recalled President Reagan’s message of being able to declare with hope, “It’s Morning in America Again.”

Yes, Lord. Let it be morning in America again. Let it be morning in our world again. Come bursting into the darkness of our world, the darkness of our land, even the darkness of our own hearts and minds that don’t fully see You as You are or ourselves in truth of Your light that reveals all that’s in us that’s not yet like You. Let it be morning in us again.

Your Word speaks of a day when “the sun of righteousness shall rise” to set things right again, spoking in the very last Chapter from the darkness of days at the close of the Old Testament with a Word of faith pointing us toward the hope to be fulfilled in the New Testament, in Malachi Chapter 4:

“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts” (Malachi 4:1-3).

The New King James Version translates “the sun of righteousness” as “the Sun of Righteousness” who arises with healing “in His wings” (v. 2). For You are our Sun. You are our Light. You are our Hope. Only You can truly make it morning in America again, morning in our world again, morning in our hearts again.

Come, Holy Spirit. Lift our eyes to Light of the Sun -- to the Light of the Son of God who is coming in His day to set things right, who comes every day to set things right within us now. Fill our hearts with this hope -- hope that will not disappoint us. Give us Your faith and grace to embrace this Promise of Your Word: “The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day” (Proverbs 3:18).

As the old hymn declares in faith and hope, “Morning by Morning, new mercies I see. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.” Lord, let it be morning in us again. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with faith and the hope that does not disappoint that it will be morning in America and your world and your heart again by the power of the grace of God, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Faith, Family, and the Fear of the Lord - November 2, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 2 - Faith, Family, and the Fear of the Lord

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I look to You and listen for the leading of Your Spirit to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ...

“Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,

    who walks in His ways!

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;

you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.

Your wife will be like a fruitful vine

    within your house;

your children will be like olive shoots

    around your table.

Behold, thus shall the man be blessed

    who fears the Lord.

The Lord bless you from Zion!

May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem

all the days of your life!

May you see your children's children!

Peace be upon Israel!” (Psalm 128:1-6)

All the blessings of God, all the blessings upon Abraham and the covenant people of God, are ours in Christ by Your grace through our faith. “That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3:14).

At the heart of these blessings is a calling to center the priorities of our lives around faith, family, and the fear of the Lord. Then through the grace of God, our lives are positioned to embrace Your promises with fruitfulness, prosperity, and peace. Then “it shall be well with (us).”

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:3).

We are blessed to be a blessing -- in the community where we work, in the nation where we vote, among the people we call neighbors and friends, along the journey of our daily encounters with the people we engage and the challenges we face. We are blessed to abide in You as You abide in us to carry Your Presence everywhere You position us and send us to be Your salt and Your light to make a difference in our world (John 15:5; Matthew 5:13-16).

Lord, let these Biblical values be at the center of my values and be the plumbline for my life. May they influence how I discern issues, how I make decisions, how I live and how I vote, how I judge what is right and what is true.

And give me the courage to live out Your convictions -- even the courage to swim against the current of any of the Christ-less-ness in our culture and take my stand against the tide of tyranny against these Biblical convictions. For we are called and blessed to be “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for (God’s) own possession, that (we) may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called (us) out of darkness into His marvelous Light” (1 Peter 2:9). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be courageous in your convictions that are centered in the Word and will of God in your discernment and all your choices to represent Christ in your world, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Governmental Authorities Perplexed by the Power of God through His Empowered People - November 1, 2022

Morning by Morning, November 1 - Governmental Authorities Perplexed by the Power of God through His Empowered People

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I open up my heart to You as You open up Your possibilities to me to follow in Your steps today everywhere You lead me. ...

“Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. Herod said, ‘John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?’ And he sought to see Him” (Luke 9:7-9).

Herod was the governmental authority in Israel, in submission to the governmental authority of Rome, which was the ruling governmental authority of the world at that time. And he “sought to see (You)” because of “all that was happening.” He was “perplexed” with this move of the power of God taking place in his realm of power and authority.

Not only was he perplexed by what he heard You were doing, he was perplexed by what he heard Your disciples were doing. The immediate verses of Scripture just before this passage describe “all that was happening”:

“And (Jesus) called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and He sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal. And He said to them, ‘Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.’ And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the Gospel and healing everywhere” (Luke 9:1-6).

Then the very next verse says: “Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed” (v. 7). And because he was perplexed, “he sought to see (You)” (v. 9).

Lord, let the governmental authorities of our community and our nation be “perplexed” by all that is happening through a move of God in our hearts that affects our communities and our nations. Let them be perplexed by the power of God over the powers of darkness and disease. The days are dark, and the culture is diseased. But You have given “power and authority” to Your disciples to make a difference.

When we take our stand and speak out our voices and live out Your character with the power and authority You’ve entrusted to us, we are salt and light in our world to make a difference in our world (Matthew 5:13-16). We “bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 3:9-10).

As we do, may even the governmental authorities who oppose us and this move of the power of God through manifestations of the coming of the Kingdom of God in our communities and nations be perplexed enough to seek You.

As we do, we experience a foretaste of the breakthroughs to come, of Your Kingdom breaking into our world, even now as we are faithful to You and all You have entrusted to us. We “have shared in the Holy Spirit and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come” (Hebrews 6:4-5).

So empower us, embolden us. Remind us of our calling to be salt and light, courageous and strong in the strength of Your power with the commission of Your authority to stand up and speak out against the darkness and disease of our society “preaching the Gospel and healing everywhere” (Luke 9:6).

As we do, we look forward to the fulfillment of Your prophetic Word in the age to come: “The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be empowered and emboldened to be salt and light in your community and nation as you stand up and speak out and live out the character of Christ to make a difference in your world, in Jesus' name. God bless you!
