Morning by Morning, December 15 - “My Soul Magnifies the Lord and My Spirit Rejoiced in God My Savior!” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Light of the world, come shine in my heart, as I lift up my heart to You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “And Mary said: ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior! For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him From generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty. He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy, As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever’” (Luke 1:46-55). As Mary carried You in her womb and in her heart for those nine months from conception to birth, she had a sense of her destiny and Your glory. Generations to come would call her “blessed” (v. 48). She “rejoiced in God (her) Savior” who had come into the darkness of our world in the light of Your glory in the embodiment of a Child in her womb (v. 47). Some still trapped in the darkness of our world today would call that a “fetus” or “blob of cells” unrecognizable as a life in her womb. But the Prophet Isaiah would refer to this One Mary carried in her womb in words of Spirit and Truth that will stand for eternity: “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this” (Isaiah 9:6-7). Like the beautiful song says, “Mary did you know?” I don’t think you could have known then all that we have come to know now of all that Baby Boy was and is and is to come. But we do know you knew enough to trust God in an obedience of faith and love at which generations have marveled. With Mary, we magnify You, Lord -- God our Savior, Savior of the world. Be high and lifted up in our hearts and in our world today, for You are Immanuel -- God with us! (Matthew 1:23) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
