Morning by Morning, November 5 - Blessings of a Nation that Repents
Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Come rule and reign as King and Lord of my life today. ...
"When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he grew strong, he abandoned the law of the Lord, he and all Israel with him. In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, because they had been unfaithful to the Lord, King Shishank of Egypt came up against Jerusalem.... A countless army came with him from Egypt.... Then the prophet Shemiah came to Rehoboam and to the officers of Judah, who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, 'Thus says the Lord: You abandoned Me, so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak.' Then the officers of Israel and the king himself humbled themselves and said, 'The Lord is right.' When the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemiah, saying: 'They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, and My wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. Nevertheless they shall be his servants so that they may know the difference between serving Me and serving the kingdoms of other lands" (2 Chronicles 12:1-8).
When Israel's king and people abandoned Your laws and Your ways, they removed themselves from Your hand of protection and opened themselves up to the invading armies of their enemies. They suffered the consequences of their choices. But then they humbled themselves, the king and the people, in repentance. So You stretched out Your hand with deliverance and held back from stretching our Your hand in judgment. Then You opened their eyes through the circumstances they created through their past choices to begin to see the difference between living as a nation under God and a nation that abandoned their God.
Come, Holy Spirit. Open the eyes of my heart to see that You are right in the ways You convict me of turning away from the ways of the Lord. Open the eyes of the people of my nation and our leaders to see that You are right in the ways You convict us of turning away from the ways of the Lord. May we humble ourselves and pray. May we humble ourselves in repentance to call upon the name of the Lord that we may be delivered from our enemies and saved from the consequences that our choices of the past command.
Thank You for the gifts of humility and repentance. They are a means of Your grace for our deliverance and salvation through Christ our Lord and Savior and King. Thank You for the gift of opening our eyes to see the consequences of our choices so that we will continue to return to You in our own hearts and in the heart of our nation.
Thank You for the promise of deliverance and healing that comes to the people of a nation who will humble themselves to repent and pray as a nation returning to be a nation under God: "If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray, seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land" (v. 7:14). These are the blessings of repentance.
Lord, let our repentance continue so Your blessings can continue. Let it be so in our hearts and in our land, all by the power of the grace of God. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
