Words of Life 5-25-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the Word of Life. Let Your words rise up in my soul and burn like a fire until they are released as praise to Your name. ... "And the Word became flesh and lived among us" (John 1.14). Now that Your Spirit lives within us, Your Word lives within us as well (John 14.15-17). You have the words of life because You are the Word of Life. By the mystery of faith and in the wisdom of God, You have entrusted Your words to us. We have the power of life and death in the words we speak (Proverbs 18.21). Let us use this power You have entrusted to us to speak blessings and not curses, life and not death (James 3.5-10). Sanctify our tongues to proclaim Your praises and prepare Your people. Let the Word of Life go forth from Spirit-filled hearts, filtered through the cross of Christ, purified through the flame of the Holy Spirit. "Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips" (Psalm 141.3). Let Your cross be our guard; let Your flame be our door. Let our words be Your words -- words of life spoken by the Word of Life, living in us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Extraordinary Witnesses 5-24-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let the light of Your glory dawn in my heart this new day. "For it is the God Who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' Who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (2 Corinthians 4.6). ... Let us be Your witnesses through every circumstance -- filled with joy in times of triumph and celebration, patient and persistent in times of strain -- always hoping, always trusting, always faithfully pressing on in the calling of our destiny in Your glory. Let us represent Your nature in all seasons to all people. "So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us" (2 Corinthians 5.20). "But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies" (2 Corinthians 4.7-10). Lord, let Your light shine through us. Let our eyes be fixed on You, though let us be aware that others are watching how we live in times of joy and of sorrow, in times of abundance and in times of famine. Let faithfulness to You be a witness to the world around us of Your faithfulness to us. This extraordinary power to be Your extraordinary witnesses belongs to You and does not come from us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Healing Peace 5-23-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I embrace Your presence as You draw me in to the holy place of prayer. Now I watch and wait for the leading of Your Spirit. ... "They have treated the wound of My people carelessly, saying, 'Peace, peace,' when there is no peace" (Jeremiah 8.11). Lord, forgive us when we try to cover up our wounds and refuse to see the wounds of one another. Forgive us when we let our pronouncements of prosperity and confessions of faith veil our brokenness and hide our pain. You are the God Who "heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147.3). But our pride causes us to deny our brokenness and our insecurities cause us to hide our wounds. Sometimes we say there is peace with our lips when our minds know there is stress; we say there is joy with our smiles when our hearts know there is sadness. Pull back the cloak of pride and strip away the facade of deception, that we may honestly open our wounds to You and receive the peace that comes with Your healing touch. But how can we be healed unless we admit we are broken? How can we be freed unless we acknowledge we are bound? You give grace to the humble, but resist the proud (James 4.6). As we humble ourselves before You in honesty and open our wounds to You in truth, You are like the good Samaritan who finds us and heals us and restores us. You are like the good shepherd who sees the needs and treats the wounds of his sheep with honesty and with love. "For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, says the Lord" (Jeremiah 30.17). By the wounds that You endured for us, we are healed, as we admit them and release them to You (1 Peter 2.24). As You give us courage to admit our own wounds, give us compassion to see the wounds of one another, that we may open them all before You. Then we will receive Your healing touch; then we will know Your healing peace. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please pray for our the healing prayer retreat sponsored by Aglow I will be leading at Cumberland Falls next weekend. Be Still 5-22-05

Morning by Morning, Sunday 5-22-05 -- Be Still Good morning, Lord Jesus. For these first few moments each morning, the world can wait. Let me think of nothing but You and the thoughts You bring to my mind. ... "Times of refreshing" come from the presence of the Lord (Acts 3.20). Teach us how to be still in Your presence, to quiet our souls before You. Show us how to let Your peace flow over us like a warm shower, as we let tension and stress swirl down the drain. Wash over us on this day of rest as we hear and heed Your gentle call: "Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46.10). Yes, Lord. ... In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, thank you for your prayers for our healing prayer retreat on Saturday. The Lord moved powerfully and gently through inner healing -- healing from the inside out -- to free us from the wounds and burdens of the past to embrace the destiny of our future. Experience and Wisdom 5-20-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Arise within my soul and lead me along Your paths. ... As we come to the end of another week of trying to live out our faith in the midst of a faithless world, it's good to stop and reflect. Convict us where we have sinned, that we may receive Your forgiveness and grace for change. Heal us where we have been wounded, that we may be encouraged and restored, even stronger than before. Free us where we have become bound by offense or entangled by pride, that we may be released from all that would hold us back from fulfilling our calling and destiny in You. Let us be wise enough to learn from our mistakes and humble enough to know we need to. As my friend Ginger said at prayer this week, "Experience is when we learn from our own mistakes; wisdom is when we learn from the mistakes of others." That's good. Redeem the experiences of our lives to teach us Your ways, that we may grow in Your wisdom. "It is good for me that I was humbled, so that I might learn Your statutes. The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces" (Psalm 119.71-72). Let the law of Your ways become the leading of our hearts. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, thank you for your prayers yesterday. The teaching on prayer ministry was very well recieved and we won our hearing in court. If you are in the area, please Come to Fountain this Saturday night for our monthly, citywide gathering for prayer, praise, and healing worship at 7pm in the chapel at Centenary in Lexington. Light of the World 5-19-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are both the Lamb of God and the Lion of Judah. You convict me of sin as my Judge, yet You forgive me of all sin as my Savior. You desire my love, while You require my obedience. You are the Son of God, yet You are also our Father God and the Holy Spirit of God, for You are One God. You are complete and whole and perfect in every dimension and in every way. You are like a skillfully cut diamond with many different facets fashioned by a master craftsman to reveal the light and fire of Your glory, yet You have no maker and there are no limits to the depths of Your nature. I worship You in humility and praise before You, in every dimension of Your Being. ... Today I will begin this day as an advocate in a court of law and finish as a minister of healing prayer. Yet I will try to seek the leading and wisdom and grace of Your Holy Spirit in all that I do, because I am to be the same person in all arenas of my life. Over twelve years ago, You called me out of the full time practice of law into the full time practice of ministry, yet there are still times when I find myself entering a world that it seemed I was leaving behind. But that's the point, isn't it, Lord? You have not called us to be Your witnesses with our lives being lived out in isolation from the world, but here in our everyday lives in the midst of the world. We are to be the same disciples of Christ living out the principles of the Kingdom of God in the church and in the marketplace, at home and away, when we are surrounded by crowds and when no one else is around -- even in the courtroom as much as in the prayer closet. You are the same, yesterday, today and forever; in this sense, so should we be. You prayed this prayer for us just before You returned to our Father in heaven: "And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father protect them in Your name that You have given Me, so that they may be one, as We are One.... I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but I ask You to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You have sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world" (John 17.11-18). Let us do all we do to Your glory, because You have called us to be who we are, all to Your glory. No matter where we are, what we are doing, or who we are with, give us grace to be Your faithful disciples in all things. In this way, we will fulfill our calling and fulfill Your prophecy of Your church in the power of Your Spirit: "You are the light of the world" (Matthew 5.14). We are the light of the world to the extent that we allow Your light to shine through us, as we live our lives in the midst of the world. Shine through us this day and every day. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, I would appreciate your prayers for me as a prayer leader tonight as I teach prayer ministry with the First Methodist Church in Lexington, and your prayer for me today as an advocate for my client in court with the law firm of Troutman & Hays. Streams in the Desert 5-17-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the Good Shepherd and Your sheep know Your voice. Help me know You more personally and hear You more clearly every day, as I listen for the leading of Your Spirit. ... You are bringing to mind the photograph my friend Pam gave me for my office that speaks of the hope You bring through healing prayer ministry. It shows the dry sands of Egypt at the edge of the Red Sea. But there in the midst of the desert is a waterspout, where bright yellow flowers have blossomed into life. "The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing.... For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water..." (Isaiah 35.1-7). You love to bring new life out of the dry places of our souls. You love to splash the color of hope across the barren canvas of despair. We need Your living waters that renew our spirits and heal our souls. We need to drink deeply from Your streams that are ever-flowing beneath the surface of our lives. Then others will be drawn to the Life they see living in us. You are the Waters that break forth in the wilderness. You are our Life in the midst of the desert. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, I will be leading a Healing Prayer Retreat in Aurora, Indiana this Saturday, 5-21 from 9-5 at First Evangelical UCC with Rev. The World has Changed 5-16-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I turn my thoughts toward You, as I wait and listen for the leading of Your Spirit to begin this new day. ... From the rising of the sun in the east to the setting of the sun in the west, yesterday we gathered together in the unity of the Holy Spirit to pray as one body throughout the earth. The Global Day of Prayer was the largest prayer meeting in history, as we prayed the same prayers and the prayers of our hearts in the languages of the world and in the language of the Spirit. As You led, we prayed in humility and with boldness, we prayed confession and repentance, we prayed fervently and passionately, with intensity and with intimacy. We worshiped You and praised You and welcomed You into our hearts and into our lands. Your glory covered the earth as the waters cover the sea (Habakkuk 2.14). Because You are answering the prayers You have placed on our hearts, heaven and earth were moved by the power of prayer. The world changed yesterday. It is different this morning than yesterday morning because prayer changes things. We do not know all that has happened, but we will begin to see the fruit of Your answers to our prayers. "And this is the boldness we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of Him" (1 John 5.14-15). We have prayed the prayers You placed on our hearts, that Your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven. Thank You for the honor and the blessing of being vessels of Your will as You released Your power through our prayers. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! The Power of Pentecost 5-15-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You and the Father and the Spirit are One. By Your grace, You come to live in our hearts and release the power of Your love. Come live in me as I welcome You into my heart afresh this day. ... Today is the Sunday we celebrate Pentecost -- fifty days after the celebration of Passover. You prepared Your first disciples for this day of the coming of the Spirit of God in power by calling them together with expectant hearts: "While staying with them, He ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. 'This,' He said, 'is what you have heard from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now' " (Acts 1.4-5). You explained that the power of God to live our lives as Your witnesses in this world is released through the coming of the Holy Spirit: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1.8). In anticipation and faith, they gathered together in one accord, "constantly devoting themselves to prayer," as they were watching and waiting for the coming of Your Spirit in power (Acts 1.14). "When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability" (Acts 2.1-4). Today we gather in one accord from every tongue and tribe and nation throughout the earth on this Pentecost Sunday set apart as a Global Day of Prayer. Though we are many and though we are physically in different places throughout the earth, we are one in the Spirit and one in the Lord, as we gather together in the place of prayer. Come Holy Spirit, like a mighty rushing wind, and fill the house of our hearts with the fire of Your living presence. Set us ablaze with a passion for You and a passion to be Your witnesses throughout the earth. Let our tongues proclaim Your praise in the spiritual language of love. As Charles Wesley wrote of this day of passionate praise and holy fire, "O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of His grace!" We triumph in Your grace this day as thousands upon thousands of tongues sing Your praise throughout the earth. Let Your Spirit come as our spirits pray; let Your fire fall as our praises rise; let our hearts swell as You fill us with Your love; let Your power be released as You send us forth. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, let's join together today for the Global Day of Prayer throughout the earth. In Lexington, we will come together in the unity of the body of Christ at Heritage Hall downtown from 3-5 pm. God bless you in your celebration of prayer today! "To the Whole World!" 5-14-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Open the eyes of my heart to seek You and behold You in deeper levels of intimacy with You every day. ... Today is Elijah's birthday. He's my fourth child and youngest son, turning three today. When he was a baby in our arms, someone said to us in prayer ministry that he would be prophesy by the time he turned three. And so he has. As I was preparing to lead the group from our church in prayer for the National Day of Prayer last week, Elijah said, "I will preach, then I will pray." I asked him what he would preach about and he said, "for the Lord ... to the whole world." He kept smiling and declaring over and over "to the whole world!" as he lifted his little hand straight up in the air with great authority. When it came time to pray, there he was at my knee, saying, "I'm ready to pray, Daddy." His little voice rang out in prayer over the microphone. I'm sure the angels of heaven who do the bidding of the Lord were dispatched to carry out the words released through a son of the King. So "the little prophet" -- as one of my pastors calls him -- got to preach and pray on the National Day of Prayer by the time he turned three. I have no doubt he won't stop until he shares his heart to the whole world! "... and a little child shall lead them" (Isaiah 11.6). Lord, restore us to the place of simple trust and childlike faith. Awaken our hearts to preach Your love and pray Your power to the whole world, one soul at a time. As we grow in wisdom and stature with each passing year, let us never lose the blessing of a simple faith and a pure heart that insists on sharing Your love with everyone around. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please join with those praying around the world for the Global Day of Prayer on Pentecost Sunday, May 15th. In Lexington, Kentucky we will gather in Heritage Hall next to Rupp Arena from 3 to 5 pm in Ballrooms 1-3 on the Vine Street level. Please come join us and pray with us if you can't. God bless you! Saturate Us 6-13-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Draw me near into the depths of Your presence in these first moments of the morning. I choose to begin this day with You. ... Saturate us with Your Spirit, Lord. Peter was so saturated with the living presence of Your Holy Spirit that even the touch of his shadow brought healing and deliverance (Acts 5.12-16). You are the healer and the deliverer; You have all power in heaven and earth. Yet, You choose to live in our hearts by the presence of Your Sprit. You desire to abide in us and for us to abide in You so intimately that we become one -- as close as the created can become one with our Creator. Let our very being exude Your presence and power because of the intimacy of our hearts with Yours. When the world sees Your nature and Your power exuding from Your people, it will be said again in our day what was said in Peter's day: "Yet more than ever believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women" (Acts 5.14). Catching our Breath 5-12-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Steady my heart as I take time to breathe in Your Spirit. ... The journey of our lives is more of an endurance race than a sprint. It's more like a cross-country run than lapping around the track. There are times along the course when we need to slow down the pace a little to catch our breath. Sometimes our heart needs to stop racing, but not throbbing. An image comes to mind of a long distance, cross-country runner who needs to catch his breath and is tempted to stop or sit down awhile. But instead he keeps walking rather than just standing or sitting or laying down. He keeps moving, just not at the same pace. When he is rested, he takes off again. Even when we pull back for a season to catch our breath, we are not to stop completely, but keep moving forward. We may spend a few days not talking with people as much, but we should not stop talking with You. As we slow down to walk for a while, the deep breaths help steady our hearts again and clear our thoughts to remind us of why we are running the race. "For Your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in faithfulness to You" (Psalm 26.3). We may slow down the pace a little for a time, but we should not take ourselves out of the race. To stop completely will take much more energy to get going again, but to slow down and walk awhile refreshes us as we catch our breath and renew our focus. You see the end from the beginning of our course, and You know best how each one of us should run our race. Let us run the race so as to win the prize (1 Corinthians 9.24). You are the prize. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! You Restore My Soul 5-11-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I entrust this day to You. ... "And after He had dismissed the crowds, He went up the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone..." (Matthew 14.23). Lord, You have created us for relationship with You and with one another, to minister to You and to minister to one another. There is great joy in finding and fulfilling our calling in Your kingdom. But sometimes we need to pull away from the crowds and go to the mountain of Your presence alone in prayer. Sometimes we need to rest and just relax. It's not being lazy or callous to the needs of others. Sometimes You make us to lie down in green pastures and lead us beside the still waters for awhile, as You restore our soul (Psalm 23.1-3). Whether we're on retreat in the mountains or in our prayer chair in the corner of the room, we can hear Your call to come away with You for awhile. Here we are refreshed and renewed in Your presence. In this place of rest in You, "surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever" (Psalm 23.6). In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, I'd appreciate your prayers for rest in my soul for these few days away in the mountains of North Carolina for retreat and relationship with our Fellowship of Ministries. "Good morning, Lord Jesus" 5-10-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I look to You and listen for the leading of Your Spirit. ... The apostle Paul called out to those who read his letters, "My little children, for whom I am again in pain of childbirth until Christ is formed in you..." (Galatians 4.19). Everything he wrote and said and did was for this purpose and to fulfill this calling -- to see Christ formed in the hearts of those entrusted to his care. That was Paul's heart because that is Your heart -- that we be conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8.29). We become like Christ as we behold Christ and offer our hearts to be filled with the Spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 3.18). To behold You is to worship You, and we become like what we worship. We take on the nature of what we allow to possess our soul. As we abide in You and allow You to abide in us, we grow in Christlikeness. Together, "we must grow up in every way into Him, Who is the head, into Christ" (Ephesians 4.15). Growing in spiritual maturity is growing in Christlikeness. We look to You and follow You, helping one another become more like You, "until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ" (Ephesians 4.13). Though we may pray and minister and work in many different ways throughout the day, this is why it is good to start each day lifting our eyes to Your face and opening our hearts to Your Spirit. This is why it is good to let the first words on our hearts each day be "Good morning, Lord Jesus." In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, I will be on my annual retreat with the MorningStar Fellowship of Ministries this week with limited internet access, so I may miss a few days of the devotional, depending on the circumstances. I'd appreciate your prayers as I receive mentoring and ministry. I pray the same for each of you. God bless you in your spiritual journey! Daily Offering by Fire 5-9-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. These moments in the morning set the tone for my day. I can start each day with thoughts of myself and what I need to do, or I can start each day thinking of You. I choose You. ... You were teaching us about patterns of worship and prayer to be lived out in our hearts through the offerings and sacrifices of the Old Covenant. What they did in the flesh, we are to be in the spirit. They were called to be obedient and focused, persisting in times of worship and prayer through the times of offering that seemed to form the center of their lives. "The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Command the Israelites and say to them: My offering, the food for my offering by fire, my pleasing odor, you shall take care to offer Me at its appointed time. And you shall say to them, This is the offering by fire that you shall offer to the Lord: two male lambs without blemish, daily as a regular offering. One lamb you shall offering in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight..." (Numbers 28.1-4). Our "offering by fire" is the offering of ourselves to You each day. Let us come at the "appointed time" to seek You first thing in the morning and to seek You as the last thing at twilight. Let our focus be on the Lamb without blemish, Who is our sacrifice, so that we may freely choose to sacrifice our time and lives for You. Let the surrender of our hearts in these moments of prayer be a pleasing aroma lifted up to You. Let this become our daily and regular offering, as we learn to live a lifestyle of prayer in the fire of Your presence. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! The Cup of Fire 5-8-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the all-consuming Fire of God. Fan the flame of Your presence You have placed in my heart. ... We gathered yesterday for our final day of teaching, impartation, and commissioning for healing prayer ministry. During worship, one of the pastors had a vision. He saw the heavens opened above us and the torn veil of the temple. But it was not torn in one tear down the middle. The veil was torn in shreds, and the shreds were falling down on us as flames of fire. Then he saw a cup and heard You say, "the cup of fire." As we tested the vision and prayed about what this meant and what to do, Scriptures that refer to the fire and the cup came to mind. As we sent for a cup, another pastor reminded us of the passage where You asked James and John, "Are you able to drink my cup that I am about to drink?" (Matthew 20.22). Then we were reminded of the cup You chose to receive from our Father in Gethsemane before laying down Your life for us all at the cross (Matthew 26.39). To share in Your ministry is not only to share in the joy of Your glory but also to share in the persecutions and rejections of those who will not understand and will not receive. As You have taught us, "Servants are not greater than their master. If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you" (John 15.20). "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you are sharing Christ's sufferings, so that you may be glad and shout for joy when His glory is revealed. If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you" (1 Peter 4.12-14). John the Baptist proclaimed the coming of the kingdom of God, saying, "I baptize you with water for repentance, but One Who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry His sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire" (Matthew 3.11). As You spoke to our hearts of what You were setting before us, one by one, we chose to drink of the cup of fire. Let the fire of God purify and cleanse our souls as You send us forth in Your power. You have set our hearts ablaze with a passion for Your living presence in us, to pray for others and continue Your ministry on earth as Your Spirit leads. As the Father sent You, so You have sent us (John 20.21). In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouarged this day! Revelations of Your Glory 5-7-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I bow low in my soul and lift You high in my life. ... A television series called "Revelations" implies that according to Scripture, You will return to earth as a child, born of a virgin, in Your second coming as in Your first. That's not true. When You return, You will "descend from heaven" in the fullness of Your glory, and we "will be caught up in the clouds" to greet You "in the air" (1 Thessalonians 4.15-18). As the angels told Your first disciples at Your ascension to heaven, "This Jesus, Who has been taken up from you to heaven into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven" (Acts 1.11). Today, You are at the right hand of the Father and Your Holy Spirit has been poured out upon Your church. Your church is Your body on earth, filled with Your Spirit on earth, eagerly awaiting Your coming but called to faithfully continue Your ministry until Your return. Let us not become passive in waiting for Your return, but active in obedience to Your commission with the Sprit of Christ in us, the hope of glory (Colossians 1.27). "And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him" (Hebrews 9.27-28). Come, Lord Jesus, come. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please keep us in prayer this weekend as I lead another teaching retreat in a series for equipping others in healing and deliverance prayer ministry with the churches of the Madisonville, KY District of the United Methodist Church. "Be Filled with the Spirit" 7-26-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I surrender as much of me as I can to You, and I receive as much of You as I can. Help me surrender and receive more tomorrow and every day after that. You must increase and I must decrease. Let this be more than words and more than an event, let this be my life. ... You have commanded us to "be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5.18).Your Holy Spirit fills us to the degree that we are emptied of ourselves. You are not replacing us, You are changing us. And our flesh resists the change. Our flesh is "at war" with the move of Your Spirit to put our flesh to death, that we may live to Christ, in the process of being conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 7.22-23). You strip away our flesh as You cleanse our soul -- our mind, will, and emotions -- and fill us with Your Holy Spirit. Our "flesh" is the part of our soul that is not yet sanctified by Your Holy Spirit, the part of us that is not yet like Jesus, the part of us that needs to die to self and be crucified to Christ. You increase and we decrease in this way, as we choose to submit every area of our lives to You, layer by layer and day by day. By Your grace, we choose "to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul" (1 Peter 2.11). "And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit" (Galatians 5.24-25). Give us the grace and the desire to embrace this process. Though it is painful, it is worth it, because it brings deeper measures of Your love and peace and joy with deeper measures of Your Spirit filling our soul. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. National Day of Prayer 5-5-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I love You, Lord, and long for Your coming in the fullness of Your glory -- here in my heart, here in our nation, and here in the earth. ... Today is the National Day of Prayer in America. You have blessed our nation beyond belief since our birth. Let us remember to humble ourselves in Your sight on the knees of our nation, that You may bless us still and let Your "grace be shed on thee." Let it not only be this day, but every day, as we exercise the freedom You have give us to freely call upon Your name in humility and prayer. Pride in Your blessing becomes the enemy of continued blessing. To the very degree we believe we have earned Your blessing or that our blessings come from our own efforts, we become the hindrance to Your continued blessings. Pour out Your Spirit of humility upon our hearts and upon our land this day. Convict us where we have allowed our blessing of independence from tyranny become a curse of independence from You. Forgive us as a people and a nation where we have grown to depend upon ourselves and take pride in ourselves -- relying upon our monetary wealth and our military might rather than our merciful and mighty God. Let it be by willing hearts that we humble ourselves on our knees before You. One way or another, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess "the name that is above every name" and proclaim "that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2.9-11). In writing this Scripture from verses 9-11 of chapter 2, it reminds us of a humbling day not long ago when we bowed the knees of our nation in brokenness and grief to call upon Your name from sea to shining sea. Let us willingly and prayerfully bow our knees today in humility before You. May Your people from every tongue and tribe and nation set aside their judgments for our obvious sins of pride and bow their knees in humility with us this day. Today is May 5th, and the 5-5 of the date brings this Scripture of 1 Peter 5.5 to mind: "... And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' " Thank You for Your promise, which we receive for our nation on this day of prayer: "If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, pray, seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7.14). Crowns of Glory 5-4-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. As the worship song goes, "We fall down; we lay our crowns at feet of Jesus. ... We cry holy, holy, holy is the Lamb." ... It is important to know who we are in Christ and that we wear the crowns You have given us. In Christ, we are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people" (1 Peter 2.9). Yet it is much more important to know who You are in us. The gifts and graces that these crowns of glory represent are all from You. We've not earned them and not deserved them. They are a gift from our Father because we have been received as royal sons and daughters of God our King. All that we are and all that we have is from You, so that there is no room for pride or glory in ourselves but only thanksgiving that You have crowned us with the glory of Your presence. "Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights" (James 1.17). So that becomes a test of our pride. Are we willing to lay down our crowns at Your feet? Have we come to see ourselves by our gifts rather than seeing ourselves as Your people? Any crown of glory we wear is because You have worn the crown of suffering for us. Let us glory in You alone. Let us lead others to You and minister Your love to them -- not so much because we know who we are in Christ as much as we know who Christ is in us. Both are important, but if we emphasis the one over the other, we can subtly slip into religious pride. Continually convict us of any sin that creeps in, that we may be continually restored to the intimacy of the presence of Your glory, through our repentance and Your forgiveness. As we do, we receive Your gifts and graces, pure and undefiled: "And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away" (1 Peter 5.4). In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. Be encouraged this day! Humility and Faith 5-3-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I bow down at Your feet, so that You may lift me to Your face. Cleanse me of sin, so that I may enter in. Humility before You is the path to intimacy with You. As You taught us through the heart of John the Baptist, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3.30). Increase, Lord Jesus. ... Your Word teaches us humility: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. ... Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you" (James 4.6-10). And at the same time, Your Word teaches us faith: "And without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him" (Hebrews 11.6). Your Word teaches us to not doubt, as You said to Peter, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" (Matthew 14.31). Yet, at the same time, Your Word teaches us to "test everything" (1 Thessalonians 5.21). Lord, as we listen for the leading of Your voice, how do we hear with both faith and humility, not doubting yet testing everything? How do we grow in intimacy with You, trusting the voice of our Good Shepherd, without growing too proud to know that we can be confused or deceived if we do not test what we hear? Teach us how to walk in the path of faith without falling into the ditch of pride and how to walk in the path of discernment without falling into the ditch of doubt. Teach us how to be the "led by the Spirit of God" (Romans 8.14), but not be deceived by the spirit who subtly "disguises himself as an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11.14). ... You seem to be bringing this Scripture to mind: "So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes from the word of Christ" (Romans 10.17). It seems You are saying: "All things must be in their proper order. It is first the word and then the faith, not first the faith and then the word." When we hear what we believe is Your word to us, we must test it against Your written Word because Your living word cannot contradict Your written Word. We must also test it against the witness of our spirit -- does it ring true? We must allow room to test it in the counsel of others, lest we become isolated and unaccountable. In this way, Your word brings faith and in the intimacy of relationship with You, You build our faith to receive and affirm Your word. Then, discernment is not doubt and our faith is not pride. Humility is the path to intimacy, and intimacy builds our faith -- faith to believe Your words are true and they can be trusted. Thank You for being our Teacher, Lord. Help us never stop learning from You and never come to place of thinking we have no more to learn. In Jesus' name we, pray. Amen. Be encouraged this day! Detours of Destiny 5-2-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead me in the way that leads to life. ... Traveling home from ministry with my friends from Wales yesterday, we made a wrong turn. As we talked and prayed, laughed and cried, we didn't know we made a wrong turn for a long time. Our detour added many hours to our journey, and I felt very embarrassed when we realized we were as far away from home then as at the beginning of our journey. But You redeem all things. As we looked back on our journey, we saw all the ways You touched our lives and the lives of others in ways that would have never happened if we had gone the way we planned. You take our wrong turns and make them right. You lead us in Your way even in the detours. You love to cause all things to work together for our good, even our mistakes. "The human mind may devise many plans, but it is the purpose of God that will be established" (Proverbs 19.21). So in the end, there are really no detours with God for the children of God. "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God" (Romans 8.14). Sometimes You are leading us in ways we don't realize and sometimes You are there redeeming the wrong ways we have chosen. Either way, if we look to You to be our Way, even our detours become part of our destiny; and You are glorified in all things. Be glorified in our journeys today and every day. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Hidden Hindrances of the Heart 5-1-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Draw me close to You in the stillness of the morning. ... As You draw us near, it exposes another layer of whatever would hinder us from the fullness of Your embrace -- not to push us way or to expose our unworthiness to draw near, but so that every hindrance can be removed. You love us this much, that You are willing to expose the hidden hindrances of the heart. Then as we release them to You by Your grace, You lift them from our hearts, so that we can lift up our hearts to You. "Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before Him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts and He knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God, and we receive from Him whatever we ask, because we obey His commandments and do what pleases Him" (1 John 3.18-22). This is what pleases You, that we allow You to expose these hidden hindrances so that we can love You in truth and love others in truth. By Your grace, we can take the action of releasing these hindrances to You. This is the call to love "in truth and action." This is the process of allowing Your truth to reveal what is causing our hearts to condemn us and holding us back from drawing near to You and to others in love. As You forgive us and cleanse us, our hearts no longer condemn us, and we have unhindered "boldness before God" because You have removed every hindrance. Thank You for loving us enough to reveal what holds us back from Your embrace, so that we can be free to draw near -- near to You and near to one another. In Jesus' name we, pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, we've come to western Kentucky to carry the fire and fan the flames of revival from one end of the Commonwealth to the other. Fire Carriers 4-30-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let Your fire burn in my heart. You are the fire; You are the burning bush; You are the flame of the Spirit of God. Burn in me as I embrace Your fire in the communion of prayer. ... In Your Revelation to John on the Isle of Patmos, You opened the heavens before his eyes to let him see a measure of Your glory. In one of the revelations, he saw You as a rider on a white horse leading the armies of heaven to judge the earth in righteousness. You were called "Faithful and True" and You were named "The Word of God." Upon Your robe and thigh were written, "King of kings and Lord of lords." Your eyes were "like a flame of fire" (Revelation 19.11-16). As John saw You that day, so we see You today. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13.8). As we seek You to behold You and to long for Your coming in glory, we see the fire in Your eyes. As we hold Your gaze, we are set ablaze. Everything in us that is not yet like You is consumed in Your holy fire, "for indeed our God is a consuming fire" (Hebrews 12.29). The longer we hold Your gaze, the more we are consumed by the fire of Your glory. Your Holy Spirit lifts our eyes to behold Your eyes of fire and teaches us how to hold Your gaze. As You are holy, so we become holy, in the all-consuming fire of Your presence. Then Your Spirit burns within us to set ablaze all that we touch. Paul said he longed to impart the spiritual gifts he had received from You to others (Romans 1.11). Let this gift of the fire of God we have received in Your presence be released and imparted to every life You would touch through ours. Let us be Your fire carriers to carry this holy fire wherever we go till the whole earth is set ablaze with Your glory. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, thank you for covering us in prayer for our "Tabernacle of Fire" last night as the Lord fanned into flame His holy fire through our sisters in Christ from Wales, Heather Butler and Mary Burt. May everything the Lord released to us be released to you and then to every life you touch -- all for His glory. God bless you to be carriers of His holy fire! Tabernacle of Fire 4-29-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. As You woke me this morning for our time together, I realized Your Holy Spirit had been worshiping You in my spirit. The first thoughts of this morning continue that song of worship: "Holy, Holy, are You Lord God Almighty; Worthy is the Lamb; Worthy is the Lamb; You are Holy!" ... For some time, You've been bringing together the people of the kingdom of God in our city and region in the unity of the Spirit, in the fervency of prayer, and in the intimacy of worship. Every time we gather together in the various forms and meetings, our hearts tremble with anticipation, "Is this the time?" We don't even really know what we are anticipating other than knowing we are anticipating You. The truth is, every time is the time, for in the unity and the fervency and the intimacy, we are being transformed into a people who seek You above all else, who long for Your presence, who long for Your glory to cover our hearts and our city and all the earth as the waters cover the sea. Tonight, You are calling us together at several key places across our region and we cry out to You again in the fervency of prayer, "Is this the time?" Your Spirit is showing me a picture of the blue earth turning in the midst of the darkness of space. I see a golden censer filled with fire, like they use in the "high church" service in some traditions. It's being swung around and around in the heavens, and with every swing, it passes by the earth, leaving a trail of smoke. Every time it swings by the earth, it grows closer. Though I don't see it, I know there will come a pass when the censer will collide with the earth and all the earth will be set ablaze with the Fire of God. Is this the time? The words You spoke on earth still ring throughout the heavens: "I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!" (Luke 12.49). Lord, prepare our hearts and our cities throughout every region of the earth as kindling ready for Your Holy Fire. Set us ablaze with the Fire of Your Presence. Though the holiness of Your Fire will consume the flesh of our sin, it will also refine our hearts into the gold of Your glory, "for indeed our God is a consuming Fire!" (Hebrews 12.29). "Another angel with a golden censer came and stood at the altar; he was given a great quantity of incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar that is before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel. Then the angel took the censor and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth; and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake" (Revelation 8.3-5). You've called us to a "Tabernacle of Fire" tonight. Is this the time? Yes, for every time is the time, as we are being transformed in the longing and the anticipation for the glory of Your coming. We are the tabernacle of the Fire of Your Presence as You fill us and consume us in the Fire of Your Holy Spirit. As we seek You and behold You, the Fire of Your Holy Spirit is changing us into Your image, as the body of Christ on earth, "from glory to glory" (2 Corinthians 3.18). Lord, hear our prayer and swing the censor of Your Holy Fire near. Set the kindling of our hearts ablaze with the glory of Your Presence. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! The Passover Lamb 4-28-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I call upon Your name -- the name that is above every name -- and seek You with all my heart at the start of a new day. ... Last week we shared in a Passover meal at a friend's house and saw so many prophesies of the coming of Christ foretold in the feast. You are the Passover Lamb (John 1.29). On the first Passover, judgment passed over every home where the blood of the lamb was applied (Exodus 12.1-28). It is the blood of the Lamb Who takes away the sins of the world that causes judgment to pass over our lives when we bring our lives under Your blood. We are cleansed from our sin and the sins of our generations "with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish" (1 Peter 1.18-19). As we call upon Your name in the confession and repentance of trusting surrender to You, Your Holy Spirit applies the blood of the Lamb to our hearts. We are cleansed of all unrighteousness so that Your judgment passes over and "the blood of Jesus, the Son of God, cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1.7). Like Pharaoh after the first Passover, the accuser of our souls is then condemned in the sea of deliverance and overcome by the waters of our freedom in You (Exodus 14.26-31). You commanded the celebration of the feast of Passover to be in the first month of the Hebrew year, "the beginning of months" (Exodus 12.1-3). Today, You call us to celebrate this blessing with clean hearts and a fresh start (1 Corinthians 5.7-8). Passover marks the season of new beginnings. As we apply the blood of the Lamb to our hearts and our homes each day, let each day be the day of new beginnings. "So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!" (2 Corinthians 5.17). We celebrate our freedom in You this new day, for the old has passed away and the judgment has passed over. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! "Where are You?" 4-27-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. How humbling to realize that the God of all creation is willing -- actually desires -- to meet with His children every day in the mystery of the communion of prayer? What a holy honor and indescribable treasure of immeasurable worth. ... Adam and Eve "heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, 'Where are you?' (Genesis 3.8-9). They were created for intimacy with You, yet it was after the fall of sin that they hid from You. You came looking for them, maybe even longing for them, with the cry for the intimacy of relationship -- 'Where are you?' You weren't crying out for an answer, for You know all things. You were crying out for them, for You longed to be with them. You are Love, and love longs for the intimacy of relationship to express love and receive love. But they drew back from You, trying to hide from Your presence. They had become afraid and ashamed, naked before You in their sin. They didn't see Your heart that even then, You longed to draw near to them and make provision to cover the nakedness of their sin. They didn't know yet that You redeem all things -- even our sin -- and nothing "will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8.38-39). Let us see the longing in Your heart for intimacy with us. We think it is humility that keeps us from seeing You this way, but it is just another form of self-centered pride that tries to describe You in our own terms rather than Your own. But Your Word reveals Your heart. You long to gather Your children into Your arms like a mother hen longs to gather her brood under her wings (Matthew 23.37). You long to comfort us as a mother comforts a child (Isaiah 66.13) and to embrace us as a father embraces a wayward son who has finally come home (Luke 15.20). You hold out Your hands all day long, longing for those who do not ask for You, yearning for those who do not seek You, crying out to us, "Here I am, here I am" (Isaiah 65.1-5). You are stilling calling out over our sin and our pride, "Where are you?" Let us learn to answer in the intimacy of prayer, "Here I am, Lord." In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In Spirit and Truth 4-26-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I exalt You, O Lord, and lift up my heart in praise. ... "I will extol You, my God and King, and bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, and praise Your name forever and ever. ... The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and His compassion is over all that He has made. ... The Lord upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down. ... The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desire of all who fear Him; and also hears their cry and saves them. The Lord watches over all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless His holy name forever and ever" (Psalm 145). You are gracious and merciful, yet You fulfill the desire of all who fear You. You are good to all and cover us with Your compassion and love, yet You destroy the wicked. You draw near to all who call upon Your name, yet it must be Your name we call upon in truth. Your heart is to lift us up when we are falling and lift our hearts when we are burdened, yet we must lift our voices to You, we must cry out to You and none other. You desire our worship, but You desire that we worship You in truth. "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4.24). In these days and the days to come, we need Your compassion and mercy and love as never before. Teach us Your truth, that we may call upon You in truth. Free us from the deception that we can call upon any god and You will answer, that we can cry out to any spiritual being and it will the God of creation who delivers us. "The Lord watches over all who love Him" (Psalm 145.20). We cannot love You, unless we know You; we cannot worship You in truth unless we know the truth. As we come to know You in the truth of who You are, we cannot help but love You and worship You. And You cannot help but draw near, for You draw near to all who call upon You in truth (Psalm 145.18). Draw near, Lord, as we worship You in spirit and in truth. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Living Stones 4-25-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the Word of God made flesh to live among us. Now You live within us by the presence of Your Spirit, making us one with You, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, to the glory of our Father. Come live in me and be at home in my heart this day and every day. ... "Come to Him, a living Stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight; and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 2.4-5). We are each living stones, being hewn and chiseled through the circumstances and afflictions of life, to be fitted together into the house of God. Every stone is unique and every stone is needed. Together, we are Your temple -- the place where Your presence dwells on earth (1 Corinthians 3.16). You desire to fill the temple with Your glory, but You will not fill a broken house nor will You fill a house made with human hands. As we each look to You, Your Spirit fits us together as one; and as one, You come and fill Your temple with the fullness of Your glory. "Listen to Me, you that pursue righteousness, you that seek the Lord. Look to the Rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug" (Isaiah 51.1). You are the Rock of our salvation; You are the Cornerstone of the spiritual house You are building with Your own hands -- one stone at a time. Let us each be fitted for our place in the temple of Your glory. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please come join us for the Tablernacle of Fire led by Heather Butler and Mary Burt of Wales this Friday night 4/29 at 7 in the Chapel of Centenary in Lexington. Hearing Your Voice 4-24-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lay this day before You and entrust it into Your hands -- hands scarred by the nails of Your sacrifice of love for us. ... "Surely the Lord God does nothing, without revealing His secret to His servants the prophets" (Amos 3.7). You have poured out Your Spirit upon all flesh -- both Your men and Your women, Your sons and Your daughters, that we may hear Your voice, discern Your will, and speak Your word as You lead (Acts 2.14-21). You are the Good Shepherd and Your sheep learn to know Your voice, so that we are not led astray but are led in trusting obedience to Your will (John 10.1-18). You go before us and all things are present to You in the heavenly realm, even before time unfolds them for us in the earthly realm. You desire to lead us by Your voice since You know now what we will face then (John 10.4). How foolish to not take the time to listen. How foolish to not take the time to learn the leading of Your voice by spending time alone in Your presence. Forgive us for not valuing this greatest of all gifts -- the gift of knowing You and Your voice so that we can obey Your will and fulfill our destiny in You. Free us from our distractions; humble us from our pride; teach us to know Your voice; and empower us to obey. Though You are preparing the way and revealing Your plans, we will never hear unless we learn to listen; and it does no good to listen unless we learn to hear Your voice. You have always commanded Your people to listen and to hear so that we can obey Your command to follow -- all for our good and Your glory (Deuteronomy 6.4-9). Give us ears to hear what Your Spirit is saying to us each day, that we may be both followers and conquerors, vigilant and victorious in Christ (Revelation 2.7) In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Transformation 4-23-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are my example and my standard, my mentor and my guide. By Your grace, I choose to follow You as You make me more like You each day. When I sin, convict me; when I stray, correct me; when I slumber, awake me. I don't want to settle for anything less. Like all Your children, I am created to be conformed into Your image -- step by step and day by day. ... "Thus it is written, 'The first man, Adam, became a living being'; the last Adam became a life-giving Spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first, but the physical, then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second Man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the Man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the Man of heaven" (1 Corinthians 15.45-49). Like the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a butterfly, we may begin like a worm crawling in the dust of the earth in our flesh; but we are created for glory to fly in the freedom of Your heavens in the beauty of holiness. As we behold You, You are changing us. As we gather in to the cocoon of prayer alone with You each day, we are being transformed by Your presence. First the physical, then the spiritual. First we make the choice of complete surrender and total submission in humility and faith, then we receive the blessing of the transformation of our souls into Your nature (2 Peter 1.3-4). "Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the Truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring Word of God" (1 Peter 1.22-23). Yes, Lord. Convict us, correct us, awaken us that we may arise into newness of life each day in Your process of transformation. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! The Spiritual War 4-22-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Bring Your Word to life in my spirit as I listen for the leading of Your voice. ... The wars of the Old Covenant fought in the earthly realm speak to us of the wars of the New Covenant being fought in the heavenly realm. For our true enemies are not flesh and blood, but the spiritual forces of wickedness, who influence us in our flesh to rebel against You and destroy one another (Ephesians 6.12). The weapons and strategies of war under the Old Covenant are now fulfilled in Christ, that we may fight with spiritual weapons in spiritual strategies at Your command under the New Covenant (2 Corinthians 10.3-6). No one desires war, yet war has been declared against You and Your people and Your purposes, so that we are at war whether we desire it or not. The war for the souls of men that began in the beginning will rage until the end (Genesis 3.15; Revelation 12.17). You are opening our eyes to see, so that we may open our hearts to obey. You are teaching us obedience and discipline, giving us wisdom and courage, as we learn to "fight the good fight of the faith" (1 Timothy 6.12). Because we are at war, we must learn to fight in the midst of war. Yet we need not fear nor let our hearts be troubled, for the victory is won by the power of the cross through the blood of the Lamb. "Thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!" (1 Corinthians 15.57). In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! The Cadence of the Drums 4-21-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Before the thoughts for the day come rushing in, I silence every thought but the thought of You. ... I hear the call of the cadence of the drums. Throughout the heavens, You are calling our steps into agreement. The scattered troops of Your army are being called to march as one. Through the worship and words You are releasing through many voices, You are bringing us into agreement, into order, into unity. You lead first in the spirit, then soul, then the body. There is a sound in the Spirit bringing our steps together to a level of unity that teachings and sermons, doctrines and creeds could never do. The call of Your Spirit is piercing through the heavens, crossing every barrier -- not stopping at the walls of division or the boundaries of pride. All who have ears to hear will hear the call and come into line -- from every tongue and tribe and nation, from every church and tradition and denomination. Your call is going forth to make "every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4.3). We will be move as one as we hear the call and answer Your command. You are making our steps steady as we move forward in agreement with the cadence of Your voice. "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above all and through all and in all" (Ephesians 4.4-6). Let us respond in courage and obedience, in the unity of the Spirit. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Fill Us Up 4-20-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I reach my hands and my heart up to You. ... "Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the Fountain of Living Water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water" (Jeremiah 2.12-13). Lord, You are the supply of all we need. You are available to us as we humble ourselves enough to acknowledge we need You. Without You, our strength fails, our hope pales, and our worries prevail. Open our eyes to see where we have dug our own cisterns, in our own strength, to be filled up with our own waters that we think will bring us the life we are thirsting for. They are easily cracked and broken, and all that we've spent so much effort in collecting just spills out onto the dry and parched soil of our souls. All the while, You long for us to simply open our hearts to You and let You fill us freely with the Waters of Your Life -- the Living Waters of the Living God, Who satisfies our thirst with Your presence. We thirst for You, Lord Jesus. Come fill us up again to overflowing with Your Spirit. Blessed are they who thirst for You, for they shall be filled (Matthew 5.6). We receive the blessing of Your filling that Your Spirit has prayed for us through Paul: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15.13). In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! You are Wisdom 4-19-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Transform me by the renewing of my mind. Shape my thoughts and guide my heart as I seek You and Your wisdom. ... You are Wisdom. As we seek You and behold You, we become wise in Your ways. The struggles and barriers of our lives begin to make more sense. With understanding comes peace. In the beginning, Your ways are not our ways and Your thoughts are not our thoughts, but You want us to grow in the wisdom of Your ways and You want to mature us in our thoughts. When we were children, we thought as children; but now we are to continually grow in maturity of our thinking so we can grow in maturity in our living. Free us from the deception and the excuse of saying we will never understand so will never try. You have given us Your Word so that we can understand Your ways. You have given us Your Spirit so that we can live in Your ways. This is wisdom -- to seek to understand Your Word and to seek to live in Your ways. "Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold; for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you desire cannot compare to her. I, wisdom, live with prudence, and I attain knowledge and discretion. The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate. I have good advice and sound wisdom; I have insight, I have strength. By me kings reign and rulers declare what is just; by me rulers rule, and nobles, all who govern rightly. I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me" (Proverbs 8.10-17). Yes, Lord. We seek You with diligence, not waiting passively to receive understanding, but actively pursuing You and Your ways. Then the pieces of our lives will fit together and then the struggles of our lives will begin to make sense, as You teach us Your ways and conform us to Your image. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. Every Moment Matters 4-18-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Focus my thoughts and lead my heart as You order my steps today. ... "Do not let your moments be wasted. Time is one of My greatest gifts, and every moment matters." Yes, Lord. Our lives can be changed in the blinking of an eye; our time on earth can be over even more suddenly. Give us wisdom to use our time well and to value every moment as a gift You have given us to give away to others. When we love one another, we are loving You. When we receive love from on another, we are receiving Your love. You are Love and You express Your love through us to one another (1 John 4.8). Our lives have significance to the extent we offer our lives in love. Everything else is a distraction from our purpose and our calling. Everything else is a waste of our time. "For all must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil" (2 Corinthians 5.10). Love will be the standard by which You judge. Give us grace to live well and to love well, so that we will be judged well on that day. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Resurrection and Life 4-17-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let Your words bring wisdom; let Your presence bring peace. You see what we don't see and You know what we don't know. If we trust in You and in Your love for us, that brings us comfort and security no matter what we face. You are our Peace and Your Spirit is our Comforter. ... Thank You for the power of Your words: "I am the Resurrection and the Life. Those who believe in Me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die" (John 11.25-26). Let the fullness of the power of this kind of life arise within our hearts. Let it lead us to live our lives fearlessly -- unhindered by the fear of death and the fear of man, undaunted by restrictions and hesitations. You call us to believe and obey, to live our lives in this truth: "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last, and the Living One. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever; and I have the keys of Death and Hades" (Revelation 1.17-18). Though we fall, yet will we rise; though darkness surrounds us for a night, Your light bursts through every morning. Every day is a new day of life in You. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. "Raise the Dead" (Mt. 10.8) 4-16-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I believe You have called me to arise and pray through the watch of the night for my friend Stanley, in agreement with my friend Sandra. By sight, his earthly life was taken last night; by faith, yet will he live. Holy Spirit of the Living God, release Your Word through the spirit of those who stand in agreement with Life and rebuke Death in this hour, to the glory of our Father in heaven. ... Lord Jesus, You have "all authority in heaven and on earth" (Matthew 28.18). We thank You for rebuking and overcoming and destroying "the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil" in the lives of those who are under siege to keep them from fulfilling their destiny on earth (Hebrews 2.14). We agree with You and the power of Your Word being released in the spirit, soul, and body of my friend and each of these. You came that we "may have life, and have it abundantly;" it is "the thief who comes only to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10.10). Teach us how to fight in the power of Your might for the lives of those we love, rather than passively sitting back and wishing the enemy of our souls would go away or at least steal away our loved ones with as little pain as possible. Forgive us for the sins of passivity, prayerlessness, faithlessness, and disobedience to Your commands. Death is our enemy and not our friend; and You have defeated our enemy in the victory of the cross (1 Corinthians 15.26). Teach us how to enforce that victory in agreement with Your Word and in the power of Your Spirit. The same Spirit Who raised Jesus Christ from the dead dwells in us (Romans 8.11). Let us believe it true and pray like it is true, because it is. Then we will begin to see our Father's Kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. You sent forth Your first disciples in Your power and authority to overcome the enemy of our souls, who claims to hold power over death and the process of death through sickness and disease. And so You continue to send forth Your disciples today in that same power and authority, commanding and commissioning us: "As you go, proclaim the good news, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give" (Matthew 10.7-8). "As the Father has sent Me, so I send you" (John 20.21). Unless we begin to take the authority You have given us and pray the prayers You have commanded us to pray, we will never see these promises come to pass. We have not because we ask not (James 4.2). Yet You have already told us Your will, proclaiming "the one who believes in Me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these" (John 14.12). Today, we ask. Today, we take the authority You have given us in the power of Your name and by the blood of Your sacrifice. We receive the keys of the kingdom of heaven You have placed in the hands of Your church (Matthew 16.18-19). We bind death and we loose life into every cell in Stanley's body. We agree with You as You rebuke the destroyer and command him under Your feet and ours (Romans 16.20). Father, You are looking for those who would "stand the gap" between Your perfect will in heaven and our current circumstances on earth, that Your kingdom may come on earth as it is in heaven (Ezekiel 22.30; Isaiah 59.16). In Christ, You have come to stand in the gap and repair the breach. You call us to stand in Christ as Christ stands in us (Colossians 1.27). Lord Jesus, You ever live to intercede for us (Hebrews 7.25); and Your Holy Spirit intercedes through us, as Your body on earth, according to perfect will of our Father in heaven (Romans 8.26-27). By Your grace and in Your power, we stand in the gap with Stanley and for him, in praying this Psalm of David on his behalf and on behalf of all those You are laying on our hearts right now and in the future battles to come: "Hear my prayer, O Lord; give ear to my supplications in your faithfulness; answer me in Your righteousness. ... For the enemy has pursued me, crushing my life to the ground, making me sit in darkness like those long dead. Therefore my spirit faints within me; my heart within me is appalled. ... Answer me quickly, O Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me, or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit. Let me hear Your steadfast love in the morning, for in You I put my trust. ... For Your name's sake, O Lord, preserve my life. In Your righteousness bring me out of trouble. In Your steadfast love cut off my enemies, and destroy all my adversaries, for I am Your servant" (Psalm 143). In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth Who came in the flesh; Who was crucified, dead, and buried; Who was raised from the dead and ascended into heaven; we declare "Arise, Stanley, Arise! We proclaim Death is defeated. We fight for your life in the name and the power of the cross, the blood, and the resurrection of Jesus. Come out of the grip of death and fulfill your destiny on earth. Life, and not Death, will have the final say of the number of your days -- in the name of Jesus, Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life." Lord, we ask this and receive this, in thanksgiving and praise. We magnify this prayer out over all those You are laying on our hearts now and in the future, in agreement with You and with one another. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. Be encouraged this day! From Sea to Sea 4-15-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are filled with Your glory. Fill my heart and my thoughts with the glory of Your presence, I pray. ... Five hundred years before it happened, Zechariah prophesied of Your first coming: "Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter, Jerusalem! Lo, your King comes to you; triumphant and glorious is He, humble and riding on a donkey" (Zechariah 9.9). Yet you also opened his eyes to see Your second coming as well: "He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war-horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and He shall command peace to the nations; His dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth" (Zechariah 9.10). Teach us how to see at many levels -- how to see where we are and where we are going; how to see things as they are, but also how they will be. Though the battles rage now, there will come a day of peace. Though the victory is won through the cross of Christ, the victory is enforced as the nature of Christ is formed in our hearts. Victory begins in humility. Your dominion stretches from sea to sea as Your Word stretches from our head to our heart. Peace comes because the enemy is defeated day by day in our souls between the humility of Your first coming and the glory of Your second. As You open our eyes to see You then, and now, and as You are to come, let us also see who we are and who we will be in You. "Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken" (Isaiah 40.5). "When Christ Who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory" (Colossians 3.4). Lord let is be so today as it will be in that day to come. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! Cleansing the Generations 4-14-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are the Word of truth and You are the Word of grace. Speak Your truth that convicts our hearts and leads to Your grace. ... In the days of Zechariah and Daniel, Your judgment came upon Your people. Yet it is always Your heart to remember mercy even in judgment. Though Your heart breaks as the justice of Your judgment falls in accordance with the integrity of Your holy nature and the principles of Your creation, Your hands of mercy are always reaching out to us to return in repentance and humility. Your mercy triumphs over judgment, as Your judgment leads us to mercy through repentance. Then through prayers of repentance for ourselves and for our ancestors before us who have sinned in the land and in their hearts against You, You forgive us and cleanse us to restore us in relationship with You. "The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. Therefore say to them, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts: Return to Me says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts.' Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, Return from your evil ways and your evil deeds.' But they did not hear Me, says the Lord" (Zechariah 1.2-4). Lord, let us hear You. Give us humility to bow before You for ourselves and for those who have gone before us, in answer to Your call. You moved upon the heart of Daniel to confess the sins of his generation and those of the generations before him, so that You could open windows of grace over Your people and their land (Daniel 9). Conviction leads us to confession, and repentance prepares the way for redemption. Thank You for the power of Your blood to release Your mercy over us when we answer Your call to repentance. "You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish" (1 Peter 1.18-19). Convict us so that You may cleanse us of our sins and the sins of the generations. Let Your mercy triumph over Your judgment as we hear and answer. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. The Fire and The Fountain 4-13-05

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Welcome in my heart and welcome in my day. ... We have all sinned and fallen short of Your glory; there is none without sin (Romans 3.21-26). We all stand guilty before You with the Gentiles who pierced You with the nails and with the Jews who pierced You with their words. Yet there is no sin the Blood of the Lamb cannot cleanse and no sinful nature the Fire of Your Spirit cannot purify. It is Your will to convict us of the sin in our hearts with godly sorrow that leads to repentance, because it is Your will to pour out Your mercy and restore us to intimacy with You. Let Your purifying fire continually burn in our hearts to expose the sin of our souls, that we may draw nearer to You than ever before, unhindered by the nature of our flesh. As You prophesied over Israel long before Your coming and dying in the flesh, so You continue to prophesy over all who stand convicted of sin and in need of the One Who forgives and redeems: "And I will pour out a spirit of compassion and supplication on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that, when they look on the One Whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over Him, as one weeps over a firstborn. ... On that day a Fountain shall be opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity" (Zechariah 12.10-13.1). May the Spirit of the One we have pierced begin to pierce our hearts. Pour out Your spirit of conviction so that You may pour our Your spirit of mercy. The Holy Fire of Your Spirit that purifies us from all sin is the same Holy Fire that burns in our hearts with a passion for You. The fires of Your purity will make us parched of thirst to drink deeply from the Fountain of Your Living Water. You are The Fire and You are The Fountain. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. Be encouraged this day! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays Friends, please Come to The Fountain this Sat night 4/16 at 7pm in the Chapel of Centenary Methodist in Lexington -- our ministry's monthly citywide gathering for prayer, praise, and healing worship. Every month is different as the Spirit leads our unplanned time in His Presence. All are welcome, so please spread the word and please cover us in prayer if you can't come. It's the 3rd Sat night of each month.
