"Not by Might, Nor by Power, but by My Spirit" - June 2, 2020

Morning by Morning, June 2 - "Not by Might, Nor by Power, but by My Spirit"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. King of Kings and Lord of Lords, come rule and reign in my heart and my land today -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...

As I listen for Your leading this morning, I can't help but think of the chaos going on in cities across our country. Violence and hate are poured out like gasoline on dry wood ready to erupt in the flames of anarchy and civil war. But at the same time, Your Holy Spirit is being poured out in the hearts of all who humble themselves to call on Your name and seek Your face and cry out in prayer (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Violence and murder are never the answer to violence and murder. Chaos and anarchy are never honest expressions for the disgust and disdain for the cruelty and injustice we face and demand to be uprooted and purged from our land.

As we pray for wisdom to know what to do, we remember these ancient words that are ever faithful and true:

"'Not by might, nor by power, but by my My Spirit,' says the Lord of hosts" (Zechariah 4:6).

Neither the might of the authorities nor the power of the fist, neither the might of abuse of power nor the reckless power of looting and rioting will set things right in our land or in our hearts. Only Your Spirit can set things right. Only Your Spirit can move hearts and give wisdom to allow needed voices to be heard and needed action to be done.

By Your Spirit, the Light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it (John 1:5). By Your Spirit, greater is the One who is in us than the one who is in the world (1 John 4:4). And by Your Spirit, the kingdoms of this world must become the Kingdom of our God and of His Christ (Revelation 11:15).

Even right now, Your Spirit is moving the hearts of Your people who are called by Your name across this land and around the world. In the unity of agreement with our voices in prayer, You command Your blessing of Spirit and Life (Psalm 133; Matthew 18:19). In repentance and prayer, in prophetic intercession and apostolic proclamation, in desperate dependence upon You alone as the only One who can change hearts and renew minds and set things right, we bow our knees and lift our eyes to the hills of Heaven, where our help comes from, where our strength comes from, where our answers come from (Psalm 121:1).

Prayer is not passive. Faith is not futile. Prayer and faith move mountains and move the heart of God (Mark 11:22-24). Prayer and faith are not begging God to do something He doesn't want to do. No, prayer are faith are the means of God's grace to come into agreement as His ambassadors on earth, as His children of God, that He can do exactly what He wants to do on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10; Romans 8:26-27).

Come, Holy Spirit. It's not by might, nor by power, but only by Your Spirit that we will see You set things right, that we will see Your Kingdom come and Your will be done, here on earth and here in our hearts and here in this land. Come make a way where there seems to be no way (Isaiah 43:19). Come shine Your Light and display Your glory, with Your power and Your might, in the very midst of this darkness we face and this darkness You will defeat. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

My Friend, may you join with me and all your brothers and sisters around the world to humble your heart in prayer and faith before the Lord our God, who will pour out His Spirit and make a way where there seems to be no way in our hearts and in our land, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. May we join together in our prayers for the United States and the nations of our world to experience God's Spirit and power and love, in His righteousness and justice, and even in great revival and awakening in these days. God bless you, my friend!

Do Justice, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly with Our God through these Times - June 1, 2020

Morning by Morning, June 1 - Do Justice, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly with Our God through these Times

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and listen up for Your voice to begin my day centered in You -- grounded in Your Word and filled with Your Spirit. ...

As I join with my praying friends around the world in these darkening   days of riots and vengeance, of calling for justice that rightly needs to be addressed and asserted, but also of escalating into what could quickly become anarchy and chaos, I cry out to You for Your wisdom and intervention. "Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; lovingkindness and truth go before Your face" (Psalm 89:14).

You are still on Your throne! And both righteousness and justice are the foundation of that throne. Righteousness is important to You and so is justice; but in Your wisdom and Your ways, You establish Your righteousness and assert Your justice through speaking the truth in love. For no lie can stand in the light of Your truth and no evil force of the world, the flesh, or the devil can withstand the power of Your love.

As I join with those around our world who bow our hearts before You and turn our eyes toward You to lead us through these days as those who choose light rather than darkness, who choose good rather than evil, who choose hope rather than despair, this Scripture comes to mind from the prophet Micah:

"And what does the Lord require of (us) but to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with (our) God" (Micah 6:8).

These are ancient words, but they are tried and true. We're to seek justice. For justice is in Your heart. And at the same time, we are to love mercy. For mercy is also Your heart. Not just justice. Not just mercy. But both justice and mercy.

So how do we do that? How do we live that out? How do we confront the injustices of our times in the light of Your truth, but also with mercy and compassion in the power of Your love? ... Only by walking humbly with our God.

To walk humbly with You is to admit we don't have the answers on our own, we don't have the power on our own. We can't set things right or even make ourselves right on our own. Apart from You, we can do nothing (John 15:4). Even our most righteous acts, apart from You, are as filthy rags, stained with the stench of the sweat of our flesh instead of the aroma of Your Spirit (Isaiah 64:6).

To walk humbly with You is to willingly choose to be desperately dependent upon You alone. It's to cry out to You for Your justice, for Your mercy, for Your wisdom, for Your ways. It's to humbly welcome You to put Your thoughts in our minds and Your desires in our hearts. It's to pray that for our leaders and for ourselves and then to act in the power of Your grace in what You speak to our hearts. For even faith, without the works of our words and our actions by the leading and power and grace of Your Spirit, is meaningless, unproductive, unfruitful, and dead (James 2:26).

So Word of God speak! Spirit of God come! Empower us to pray in humility and faith. Then empower us to stand up and speak up as we lift up Your name, filled up with Your Spirit. Then the winds of chaos will not prevail. Then the waves of turmoil will subside. Then justice and mercy will be restored.

Lord, let this be our desire. Let this be our prayer and proclamation in expectant faith. Let this be a worldwide witness of Your resurrection Pentecost power to overcome evil with good, to overcome hate with love, to overcome chaos with peace, here in this land and here in our hearts and to the ends of the earth! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend, may you be empowered with the Holy Spirit to do justice, to love mercy, and walk humbly with your God as you stand up and speak up in prayer, in proclamation, and in every way the Lord would lead you through these times in His resurrection Pentecost power, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. May we join together in our prayers for the United States and the nations of our world to experience God's righteousness and justice revealed in Jesus Christ. God bless you, my friend!

Holy Fire Fall on this Day of Pentecost! - Morning by Morning, May 31, 2020

Morning by Morning, May 31 - Holy Fire Fall on this Day of Pentecost!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and ready to be set ablaze with the Holy Fire of Your Holy Spirit, I look to You and listen for Your leading on this Day of Pentecost. ...

"When the Day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability" (Acts 2:1-4).

"Pentecost" -- from the word meaning "fifty" is one of the most significant and ancient Biblical feasts, marking fifty days after "Passover." Every year at Pentecost, called "the Feast of Weeks" or "Shavuot" or "the feast of the Harvest," all the men of Israel were called to come up the Temple in Jerusalem to celebrate the goodness and provision of God (Leviticus 23:15-16). In the Jewish tradition, it also marks the time of the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai.

"Pentecost" is the New Testament name in the Greek language for this significant Jewish, Biblical feast of honoring the presence and the power of God, fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost and now continually being fulfilled in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit of the Living God in the hearts of God's people throughout all the earth. The Law of God is no longer merely written on tablets of stone and given to one man, as in the days of Moses on the mountain. But now the Law of God's love is shed abroad and poured into the hearts of all who would humble themselves and call on You and trust in Your name to be filled with Your Spirit. "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us" (Romans 5:5).

Father, we thank You for the "Passover" of the Blood of Jesus that cleanses our hearts through repentance and humility and faith. And we thank You for the "Pentecost" of the great outpouring of Your Holy Spirit who comes to baptize us in Your Holy Fire to be an expression of Your power and love through our lives as Your people in our world.

As You said, Lord Jesus, in calling Your first disciples to watch and wait with expectant faith and hungry hearts for the coming of this holy day of the Holy Spirit: "Wait for the Promise of the Father. 'This,' He said, 'is what you have heard from Me; for John baptized with water but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.... You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth!'" (Acts 1:4-8)

Today is that day for us! Today is the Day of Pentecost! Let this be the day of our Personal Pentecost!

Come, Holy Spirit! Come in Your Fire and Your Power! We need You now more than ever before. We need the power of the Love of God to be shed abroad and poured out into our hearts to be witnesses of Jesus and our Father's heart in the power of Your Spirit in the midst of our world.

Even as we wake up this morning to reports of burning fires in cities across America, may Your Holy Fire burn in us. The Fire of God in the Love of Jesus speaks up against injustice and prejudice, against cruelty and evil in every form -- even if, and especially if, evil is expressed through governmental power and authority. But the Fire of God burns in our hearts to speak up and stand up in faith, in truth, with courage and with love -- not in violence and vengeance of the fires of Hell that come only to steal and kill and destroy. It's the Holy Fire of our God who is a Consuming Fire of Truth and Love that conquers all -- not the unholy fires of the flesh set ablaze in anger and rage expressed in chaos, wickendness, and sin (John 10:10; Hebrews 12:29).

Come, Holy Spirit! Let the Holy Fire of God consume the unholy fires of our flesh -- here in our own hearts, here in our nation, and here our world. You're the Holy Fire who burns in the temple of our hearts that will never go out (Leviticus 6:13 fulfilled in 1 Corinthians 6:19).

Holy Fire fall! Holy Fire burn! Holy Fire consume us and consume our world, that "the knowledge of the glory of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea!" (Habakkuk 2:14) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and mighty, heaven and earth are filled with Your glory -- the Lord God Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come! (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

"There's Purpose in My Power!" - Morning by Morning, May 29, 2020

Morning by Morning, May 29 - "There's Purpose in My Power!"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of all I am and all I do -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...

As we pray for a fresh and mighty outpouring of Your Holy Spirit, of Your power and love, in these days of Pentecost now upon us, I hear You speaking in my heart: "There's purpose in My power." ...

As I listen for more, You're bringing to mind Your written Word to confirm Your spoken word: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8)

Yes, Lord. There's purpose in Your power. You empower us with Your Spirit to be Your witnesses. You empower us with Your Spirit to share the power and the love of God in the name of Jesus everywhere You send us. And You empower us with Your Spirit to confirm the truth of Your Word and the nature of Your heart through salvation and healing and freedom in Your name:

"So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and proclaimed the Good News everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it" (Mark 16:19-20).

As the apostle Paul experienced and explained while he went everywhere You sent him in the authority and power of Your name and Your Spirit, "Our message of the Gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance" (1 Thessalonians 1:5). In seeing You confirm Your Word with Your power as he bore witness to Your name, he declared, "My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God!" (1 Corinthians 2:4-5).

It's no "coincidence" that the Day of Pentecost comes at this time when our world so desperately needs a great demonstration of Your great power of Your great love through Your people who are wholeheartedly watching and waiting on You for this great outpouring of Your Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit! Come, Holy Fire! Come, Holy Power! -- the power to be witnesses of Jesus and the heart of our Father, to be witnesses of the love and mercy of God wherever we are and everywhere You send us in the authority and power of Your name! Let this be an unprecedented Pentecost in these unprecedented times! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My Friend, may you be indued with power from on high, filled afresh with the Holy Spirit of the Living God, and empowered to be a witness of Jesus wherever you are and everywhere He sends you, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Both "The Fear of the Lord" and "The Friendship of the Lord" - Morning by Morning, May 28, 2020

Morning by Morning, May 28 - Both "The Fear of the Lord" and "The Friendship of the Lord"

Good morning, Lord Jesus. My Lord and Savior, my Shepherd and Advocate, my Master and Miracle-Maker, and yet my Best Friend. ...

As You said to Your first disciples, You continue to speak to all of Your disciples who would lay down their lives and take up their cross to follow You:  "I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from My Father. You did not choose Me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last..." (John 15:15:16).

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we live out our lives in both the fear of the Lord and the friendship of the Lord. We fear You and at the same time, we love You. We serve You as Master and at the same time, we serve alongside You as Friend. We are both bondservants and also bonded together, heart to Heart and spirit to Spirit.

We fear You and honor You. We worship You and serve You. And yet, You invite us into a much deeper, much more intimate, much more humbling and honoring personal relationship with You. We're not merely servants, we're friends. We're not merely defined by what we do for You and Your Kingdom in our service and servanthood, because You desire so much more -- not merely our service but our complete surrender of all that we have and all that we are.

That's the friendship that's closer than blood (Proverbs 18:24). That's the friendship we have with You in both the fear of the Lord and the friendship of the Lord that's only possible through Your Sacrifice of Your blood and the powerful, unfailing, never-ending, steadfast bond of Your love.

To say You no longer call us Your servants but Your friends is to say our identity is no longer grounded primarily in what we do for You but in who we are to You. And when we get that settled in our hearts, we can't wait to go and serve You, to go and bear much fruit in the glory and honor of Your name -- in the name of our Master and in the name of our Best Friend! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be free to fully embrace the friendship of the Lord as You honor Him and serve Him with all that you are and all that have in the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord, in Jesus' name. And may you go and bear much fruit that comes forth out of knowing His much love. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!
