Day of Atonement, Fulfilled in Jesus, "Once for All" - September 28, 2020

Morning by Morning, September 28 - Day of Atonement, Fulfilled in Jesus, “Once for All”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. On this Day of Atonement, I look to You   -- the One who alone can atone for our sins and set things right between our holy God and an unholy people. ...

“But when Christ came as a High Priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), He entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God!” (Hebrews 9:11-14).

Under the Old Covenant, the sacrifice for the sins of the high priest and the people of Israel was to be made once a year on the Day of Atonement, throughout all their generations forever (Exodus 30:9-10; Leviticus 16:1-35). It was to be a day of complete rest, with no work, as the people fasted and prayed in repentance for their sins.

The blood of a bull was shed and offered for the sins of the high priest and the blood of a goat was shed and offered for the sins of the people. Then the high priest was commanded to “lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, and all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and sending it away into the wilderness by means of someone designated for the task. The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to a barren region; and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness” (Leviticus 16:21-22).

All of this was a type and a shadow of what was to come and be fulfilled in You as our Eternal Sacrifice, the “Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29) and our “Great High Priest” who has forever offered Yourself as our Sacrifice and dashed Your own blood upon the Mercy Seat of God that our relationship with God may be set right and restored through Your mercy and grace (Hebrews 4:14-16).

The Messianic Prophecy of Isaiah written nearly eight hundred years before the coming of the Messiah and Savior of all the world, Jesus the Christ, speaks of the One who will take upon Himself all our sins and set us free: “The Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all.... For He shall bear their iniquities....” (Isaiah 53:6,11).

Speaking of the One to come who would be our Sacrifice and Atonement once and for all, Your Prophecy of Isaiah Chapter 53 declares of our Messiah and Savior:

“Who has believed what we have heard?
    And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He grew up before Him like a young plant,
    and like a root out of dry ground;
He had no form or majesty that we should look at Him,
    nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him.
He was despised and rejected by others;
    a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity;
and as one from whom others hide their faces
    He was despised, and we held Him of no account.

Surely He has borne our infirmities
    and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted Him stricken,
    struck down by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
    crushed for our iniquities;
upon Him was the punishment that made us whole,
    and by His bruises (“stripes” KJV) we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have all turned to our own way,
and the Lord has laid on Him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and He was afflicted,
    yet He did not open His mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so He did not open His mouth.
By a perversion of justice He was taken away.
    Who could have imagined His future?
For He was cut off from the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people.
They made His grave with the wicked
    and His tomb with the rich,
although He had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in His mouth.

Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush Him with pain.
When You make His life an offering for sin,
    He shall see His offspring, and shall prolong His days;
through Him the will of the Lord shall prosper.

Out of His anguish He shall see light;
He shall find satisfaction through His knowledge.
    The Righteous One, My Servant, shall make many righteous,
    and He shall bear their iniquities.

Therefore I will allot Him a portion with the great,
    and He shall divide the spoil with the strong;
because He poured out Himself to death,
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet He bore the sin of many,
    and made intercession for the transgressors” (Isaiah 53:1-2).

Today is the holiest day of the Jewish people, when they fast and pray throughout the earth on this Yom Kippur. Yet there is no longer a high priest or temple or a sacrifice of bulls and goats for sin. The temple was destroyed, just as You said. The veil of the temple, where the high priest would go behind into the Holy Place one time a year before the mercy seat of God, was ripped in two, from top to bottom, at the moment of Your Sacrifice upon the cross for us all -- both Jew and Gentile (Matthew 27:51).

As You proclaimed, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). And on this holy day, the Day of Atonement, I thank You and praise You for Your Sacrifice for me and for all, “once for all” (Hebrews 9:12). All my sins were laid upon You, that I am now forgiven and free, restored in righteousness by Your blood to be right with God (Hebrews 9:23-28). So today, in both deepest humility for my sins but also with highest praise that they are all forgiven in You, I praise You and thank You that every day I can “come boldly to the throne of grace” where I have obtained mercy and grace through what You have done for me, once and for all! (Hebrews 4:16) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you know you are forgiven and free through the Blood Sacrifice and Atonement of Jesus Christ, as You humble yourself turn to Him in faith for all He has done for you, in Jesus name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

"Go Up" to the Battle in Victory! - September 24, 2020

 Morning by Morning, September 24 - "Go Up" to the Battle in Victory!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Speak into my spirit, as I listen for Your leading, here in these first moments of my morning -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. ...

"Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the valley of Rephaim. David inquired of the Lord, 'Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?' The Lord said to David, 'Go up; for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.' So David came to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. He said, 'The Lord has burst forth against my enemies before me, like a bursting flood.' Therefore that place is called Baal-perazim. The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them away" (2 Samuel 5:18-21).

Our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of darkness in every form they present themselves (Ephesians 6:12). They are our "Philistines" who "come and spread out" before us with intimidation, control, and fear, with mockery, ridicule, and deceit, with the weapons of their warfare that are meant to steal, kill, and destroy in our lives (John 10:10). They especially love to "spread out" in "the valley" places in our lives to kick us when we're down, to try to keep us from looking up or seeing past their wicked plans and cruel assaults.

But our God is greater! "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world!" (1 John 4:4) "Nothing is impossible with God!" (Luke 1:37) And "all things are possible to the one who believes!" (Mark 9:23)

Like David, You call us to "inquire of the Lord," to listen for Your voice, to trust in Your plan, and to believe by faith, lived out in our words and actions in alignment with Your will. And if we will listen, we will hear You when You say, "Go up! For I will certainly give them into your hands!"

Our enemies were defeated the day they nailed Your hands to a cross (Colossians 2:13-15).  And now by the power of Your grace, You enforce that victory of the cross in our lives, as we agree with You and call on Your name, to bring us through our valleys and burst through our enemies like a bursting flood of Your unstoppable power and unrelenting love for us! As You've promised in Your Word and invite us to believe and declare in the authority of Your name and power of Your blood: "The God of peace will shortly crush Satan under your feet! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!" (Romans 16:20)

Yes, Lord! As best as I can and all by Your grace, I choose to "Go up" and run to the battle today, as You enforce the victory of Your cross and burst through my enemies! I choose to believe You've already given them into my hands and will soon crush them under my feet! In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you go up to the battle in victory, as the Lord bursts through your enemies when you look up to Him, listen for His voice, obey His command, and trust all He has done for you through the victory of His cross, in Jesus name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Are There Ten Righteous Who Remain? -- Or Only One. - September 23, 2020

 Morning by Morning, September 23 - Are There Ten Righteous Who Remain? -- Or Only One.

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You here in my heart and every moment of my day -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...

"The Lord said, 'Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, seeing that Abraham shall become a great a mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? No, for I have chosen him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice; so that the Lord may bring about for Abraham what He has promised him.' Then the Lord said, 'How great is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very grave their sin! I must go down and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to Me; and if not, I will know'" (Genesis 18:17-21).

You spoke to Abraham from Your heart of mercy before Your day of judgment for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. There was a great outcry, for there was grave sin in those cities. Yet as much as there was outcry for the sin and the righteousness of Your justice and judgment, You moved in Abraham's heart to intercede with an outcry of passionate prayer for Your forgiveness and mercy. For the sake of a few who remained righteous -- seeking to be right with God in their hearts turned to You -- You were willing to withhold the judgment they deserved and forgive them their sin:

"Then Abraham came near and said, 'Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You then sweep away the place and not forgive it for the fifty righteous who are in it? ... And the Lord said, 'If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will forgive the whole place for their sake" (Genesis 18:23-26). Abraham persisted in prayer -- What if there are forty-five righteous who remain in the city or forty or thirty or twenty or even just ten? (v. 27-32) With Your heart for mercy, You replied to Abraham's persistent prayers, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy it" (v. 32).

When You look at the heart of our cities throughout our nation, no doubt there is a great outcry for our grave sins -- even in the hearts of Your people who are called by Your name, where we've given in to our culture and been corrupted in our complacency and our compromise with Your Word and Your ways. You are righteous in Your judgment against our sin. And we are deserving of the destruction You rained down on the cities You wanted to spare but could not for the lack of even just a few righteous who remained.

As You look at the cities of our nation, are there ten hearts who remain righteous? Are there ten souls who remain faithful? As You said to Abraham, would You be willing to speak to us, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy it?" (v. 32) ...

The truth is, "None are righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:9; Psalm 14:3; Isaiah 53:6). "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

So as much as the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, we desperately need Your mercy and grace. We don't deserve it. We can't earn it. But we can humble ourselves in Your sight in prayer, we can turn from our wicked ways in repentance, and we can call upon Your name and cry out to You for ourselves and for the cities of our nation (2 Chronicles 7:14). As we do, we ask You to remember mercy even in Your judgment (Habakkuk 3:2). And we remind You of the Promise of Your Word, "If we confess our sins, He who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

Come, Holy Spirit. Come stir in the hearts of ten or more in every city in our nation to turn to You, to return to You. It's not on the basis of our righteousness, but on the basis of Your righteousness, that we humble ourselves to seek Your mercy. "For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the Righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring (us) to God" (1 Peter 3:18). Solely on the basis of the Blood of Christ alone, through His righteous Sacrifice for us, may You hear from heaven and forgive our sins and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14). In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be stirred by the Holy Spirit to join with those who are humbling themselves in prayers of repentance in these days for ourselves and the cities of our nation, seeking to return to God and receive His mercy as we cry out to Him, in Jesus name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!

Boldly Speaking Truth to Governmental Authority by the Holy Spirit - September 22, 2020

 Morning by Morning, September 22 - Boldly Speaking Truth to Governmental Authority by the Holy Spirit

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill my heart with Your Spirit and my mouth with Your words, as I wait for Your leading and listen for Your voice to begin my day wholly surrendered to You -- as best as I can and all by Your grace. ...

"So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, (Paul and Barnabas) went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived in Salamis, they proclaimed the word of the God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John also to assist them. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they met a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet, named Bar-Jesus. He was with the Proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God. But the magician Elymas (for that is the translation of his name) opposed them and tried to turn to the Proconsul away from the faith. But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, 'You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? And now listen -- the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind for a while, unable to see the sun.' Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he went about groping for someone to lead him by the hand. When the Proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, because he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord" (Acts 13:4-12).

I've heard many Christians -- even Christian leaders I dearly love and respect -- say we should stay out of politics, that we should only speak to God in prayer and not spend our time trying to speak to those in governmental authority. But that was not the view or practice of the Apostle Paul in Scripture.

As soon as he was filled up and sent out by the Holy Spirit on his very first missionary journey, just after his commissioning into ministry with Barnabas at Antioch, we see him boldly proclaiming the word of God to the Roman proconsul of Cyprus. The Proconsul was "an intelligent man" and carried with him the weight and authority of the Roman empire in that region. He was also being seduced and influenced by the voice of evil, "full of deceit," and "an enemy of all righteousness" through a false prophet named Bar-Jesus, who practiced the occult as a "son of the devil" and had the ear of the Proconsul in his position of governmental authority.

Paul and Barnabas didn't hide away in their prayer closet with their heads in the sand and their spiritual eyes blinded to signs of the times. But coming from the place of prayer, filled with the Holy Spirit, they boldly took their opportunity to speak into the life of this leader of governmental authority and political power. When the Proconsul was open to spiritual truth and "wanted to hear the word of God," Paul and Barnabas didn't hesitate, but seized the opportunity to speak the truth of God's word and share the hope that burned within them.

They were not without opposition from the kingdom of darkness and deceit, furiously resisting the kingdom of light and truth. The Holy Spirit was preparing the way of the Lord in the Proconsul's heart and making "straight paths of the Lord" into his life and the lives of those under his authority and influence in the region. But the false prophet, Bar-Jesus, "opposed" the word and truth of the true Jesus and "tried to turn the Proconsul away from the faith."

No doubt that same spirit of antichrist, of false prophecy, of lies and deceit and deception -- trying to make "crooked" the "straight paths of the Lord" as "the enemy of all righteousness" -- is alive and well today. No doubt that same spirit is still seeking to get the ear and speak into the lives of the politicians and people in positions of strategic governmental authority and influence in our day.

Will we run and hide? Will we shrink back and say, "Whatever will be will be?" Will we submit to some forced form of separation of church and state that means the voice of the church should be silent in the face of government. Will we passively surrender to the onslaught of a culture seeking to destroy all that it righteous and true according to the word and heart of God?

Or will we be "filled with the Holy Spirit" to look intently into the face of the opposition and speak the truth in the power and authority entrusted to us as ambassadors of Christ? Will we be prayed up and also speak up? Will we pray and also vote? Will we dare to believe the power of God to confirm His word with signs and wonders, as in His first church who were on fire with their first love for Him alone?

"Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you!" (Ephesians 5:14)

Bar-Jesus was struck blind for a time, when these disciples of Jesus stood up and spoke up. His spiritual influence over the governmental authority was broken by the word and the power of God released through the boldness and courage of Paul and Barnabas as servants of the Most High God. "When the Proconsul saw what had happened, he believed." "He was astonished at the teaching about the Lord" Jesus Christ and the power of His Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit. Fill us. Empower us. Send us with Your voice to speak the word of God with boldness and authority, even to those seated in strategic places of governmental authority. Set us free from our stupor and slumber in the Body of Christ. Deliver us from our complacency and passivity. Confirm Your word You'll speak through us with signs and wonders of Your power and authority (Mark 16:20; Hebrews 2:4).

As in the days of Your first followers in the Book of Acts, let Your Holy Spirit fill us and empower us to take our stand and declare Your truth in the face of the spiritual forces and influencers that oppose Your word: "And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to Your servants to speak Your word with all boldness while You stretch out Your hand to heal, and sign and wonders are performed through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus!" (Acts 4:29-30) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit to bolding speak the word of God in every opportunity He gives you to shift our government to the path of righteousness and see His word confirmed by His power and authority, in Jesus name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you, my friend!
