The Redeemer of Hope in Our Hearts in This Season - December 6, 2022

Morning by Morning, December 6 - The Redeemer of Hope in Our Hearts in This Season

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I welcome You here in my heart and every moment of my day. ...

“There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years” (Luke 1:5-7).

The Gospel of Luke tells the story of Jesus beginning with the story of John the Baptist, who would first “prepare the way of the Lord” for the coming of the Messiah, for the coming of Christ. And the story of John the Baptist begins with the story of his father, Zacharias, and his mother, Elizabeth.

Though Zacharias and Elizabeth “were both righteous before God,” “they had no child.” “Elizabeth was barren.”

In that day, to be “barren” would be seen as a great disappointment. It would even be seen by some as a judgment of God or a curse upon her life or their home. Elizabeth herself called her barrenness a “reproach among people” (v. 25). She had carried her “reproach” for a long time, because now she and her husband “were both well advanced in years.”

Yet at least at some time or for season through those long years, Zacharias had prayed for a son (v. 13). And the story of the Gospel of Luke begins with “an angel of the Lord” coming to Zacharias as he offered up his prayers at “the alter of incense,” announcing to him, “Your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John” (v. 11-13).

How often we give up on our prayers. How often human hearts, right up to the present day, belittle “our hopes and prayers” or mock “our thoughts and prayers” as if they have no meaning, no effect. Hopes and thoughts and prayers are foolishness to the world, a waste of time, just an excuse for inaction or empty expressions of helplessness.

But You heard Zacharias’ prayers. You saw Elizabeth’s reproach. And You sent Your word; You sent Your angel of the Lord, to speak a word of promise for what was to come. You would turn their sorrow into joy, their reproach into honor. Their names would be remembered forever, forever sealed in Scripture and in the story of Jesus -- not as a symbol of the curse of God or the reproach of people, but as a symbol of hope and faith and the provision of the God who sees and answers, despite the delay of time and impossibility of the circumstances. As the angel of the Lord declared, “You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice” at the birth of your son! (v. 14)

I’m reminded of another prophecy that speaks of Your heart and Your power to turn despair into joy and reproach into honor from the words of the Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 54:

“Sing, O barren,

You who have not borne!

Break forth into singing, and cry aloud,

You who have not labored with child!

For more are the children of the desolate

Than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord.

“Enlarge the place of your tent,

And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings;

Do not spare;

Lengthen your cords,

And strengthen your stakes.

For you shall expand to the right and to the left,

And your descendants will inherit the nations,

And make the desolate cities inhabited.

“Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed;

Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame;

For you will forget the shame of your youth,

And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore.

For your Maker is your husband,

The Lord of hosts is His name;

And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;

He is called the God of the whole earth.

For the Lord has called you

Like a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit,

Like a youthful wife when you were refused,”

Says your God.

“For a mere moment I have forsaken you,

But with great mercies I will gather you.

With a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment;

But with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you,”

Says the Lord, your Redeemer” (Isaiah 54:1-8).

You are our Redeemer. You are the God who sees us, who hears us, who answers us. You’re the God who turns our shame into praise and our hope deferred into answered prayers. You give us grace to overcome the waiting and doubting. And You answer according to Your perfect timing and in Your perfect way according to Your perfect plans.

In many ways, the story of Zacharias and Elizabeth, here at the beginning of the story of Jesus, is a prophetic picture of seasons of our journey and our story with Jesus as well. Let hope arise in our hearts, trusting our God who redeems, in this season of preparation for the coming of Christ. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be filled with hope, trusting in our God who redeems all things in His perfect timing, His perfect way, for His perfect plans, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Sevenfold Spirit of the Lord upon the Coming Messiah - December 5, 2022

Morning by Morning, December 5 - Sevenfold Spirit of the Lord upon the Coming Messiah

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your leading. ...

“There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,

And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,

The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

The Spirit of counsel and might,

The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord” (Isaiah 11:1-2)

Your Word prophesied of the coming of the Messiah -- coming through the family tree of Jesse, the father of David. This Messiah would be a son of David in the family tree of humanity; and at the same time, this Messiah would be the Son of God from the family tree of the Father of all.

“The Spirit of the Lord” would “rest upon Him.” And every dimension and expression of the Spirit of the Lord would be fully expressed through Him -- wisdom and understanding, counsel and might, knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Many would call this an expression of the Sevenfold Spirit of the Lord.

With “righteousness” and “faithfulness” power and authority would be released “with the rod of His mouth” and “the breath of His lips,” as He honors His Father with “delight’ in “the fear of the Lord,” as One with the Father’s Heart and One with the Father’s Spirit (v. 3-5).

Like the six branches coming out of the stem of a menorah with seven candle lights burning, with three branches extending from each side of the center stem, like the lampstand in the tabernacle, the Spirit of the Lord is the center stem (Exodus 25:31). And out of the center stem come wisdom and understanding to the left and the right, counsel and might to the left and the right, knowledge and the fear of the Lord to the left and the right. Each of the six side stems turn up to hold their candle burning with light to match the burning light of the center stem.

This is a prophetic picture of the One who would be “the Light of the World.” In the words of the Messiah, Jesus the Christ, “I AM the Light of the World. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the Light of Life” (John 8:12).

We welcome the Light of our Messiah, of our Christ, into our hearts and into our world. We desperately need the Spirit of the Lord. We desperately need Your wisdom and understanding, Your counsel and might, Your knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And we thank You for Promise of Your Word and the fulfillment of this Prophecy of the Messiah: “In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5 ESV).

Lord, let the Light of Your Menorah, the Light of our Messiah, shine into the darkness of our world with the Light of Your Life in this season of renewed hope and expectant faith. We long for Your coming. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

“The God Who Spoke Still Speaks” - December 2, 2022

Morning by Morning, December 2 - “The God Who Spoke Still Speaks”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart to lead me in Your ways today. ...

“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high...” (Hebrews 1:1-3).

Father, thank You for speaking to us through Your prophets with words now sealed in the Scriptures of the Word of God. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:15-17).

And at the same time, all that You have spoken through Your prophets and through the Word of God ultimately speaks of the One who is the Word of God -- our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ -- “His name is called The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13; John 1:1). He is “the Word (Who) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

Lord Jesus, Word of God, Word made Flesh, thank You for coming and dwelling among us to reveal our Father’s heart, our Father’s nature, our Father’s word, our Father’s will as “the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person” (Hebrews 1:3). As You said: “I and the Father are One” (John 10:30). “No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.... I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me” (John 14:9-11).

And now heavenly Father, dear Lord Jesus, You have come to abide in us by Your Holy Spirit, so that the Word of God has now been made flesh in us, in all who believe Your Word and receive Your Word. As You explained, Lord Jesus: “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever -- the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16-17). “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.... The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance al things that I have said to you” (John 14:23-26). “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you” (John 16:14).

Come, Holy Spirit. One with our Father, One with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, come be One within us, within me. Bring the words of Jesus alive in me, the Word of God made Flesh in me. Teach me and bring to remembrance the words of Jesus, the Word of God, the words of life to me. As Jesus said, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).

This is such a mystery, a mystery of faith and life in the Spirit and in the Word. “God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27) -- which is Christ in each one of us who believe, the Word of God speaking to us, living within us, made Flesh within us, the hope of glory -- Your glory displayed through us in this mystery of faith and all by Your grace.

Keep speaking Your words of spirit and life to me and to all who will hear and trust and obey. Let Your words of spirit and life abide in us and flow through us each and every day, O Lord, my God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Fulfill the words of Jesus in us: “That they all may be one, as You Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You have Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me” (John 17:21-26).

As a friend and mentor of mine Max Lucado often says, “The God who spoke still speaks. The God who forgave still forgives. The God who came still comes.” Lord, let it be so. Thank You, Lord, that it is so -- not just here at Christmas time, be each and every day for each and every one of us.

Now “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with (us) all” (2 Corinthians 13:14). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you know and embrace the God who who spoke and still speaks with His words of spirit and life in you and through you as a child of God and disciple of Christ in the abiding Presence of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Days of Elijah to Hear with Humility and Speak with Authority - December 1, 2022

Morning by Morning, December 1 - Days of Elijah to Hear with Humility and Speak with Authority

Good morning, Lord Jesus. In the communion of prayer, I’m watching and waiting for Your leading to start my day focused on You. ...

“And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, ‘As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word’” (1 Kings 17:1).

Because Elijah stood before the Lord, he was able to stand before kings. Because he spent time listening for Your word, he was able to speak Your word to others.

Scripture makes clear these were Your words and not merely his own. “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit” (James 5:17-18).

He didn’t speak before he prayed. And because he prayed, he was able to speak. First prayer, then prophecy. First humility before God, then authority before man. That’s how “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16).

This is not just a principle for Elijah or for super-prophetic people or for spiritual giants. He had “a nature like ours” (v. 17). And one of the ways You’ve created us with this nature is to be able to draw near to You in the humility and intimacy of prayer, so we can hear Your voice and follow Your lead:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.... I am the good shepherd.... My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:1-27).

When You first spoke these words during Your time on earth as the Son of Man, those who practiced religion without relationship, those who had only a form of godliness but denied the real power thereof, couldn’t hear it, couldn’t believe it, couldn’t receive it. They “took up stones” to stone You and hardened their hearts to reject You (v. 31).

You lamented over them with Your heart reaching out to them, crying out to them, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” (Matthew 23:37).

Let us not harden our hearts or keep distant from You in unbelief and cold religion. Draw us near. Open our hearts to hear. Give us a deeper hunger and thirst for Your Presence and a more sensitive discernment of Your voice.

Then we’ll be able to speak what we hear when we’re led by Your Spirit. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14). We can even speak before rulers and kings if we’re led, because we’ve spent time in the intimacy of prayer with the Ruler of All and the King of Kings.

Teach us now how to pray, how to hear, how to discern, and how to obey. Prepare us now for what we may be called to live out in the challenging days to come. Just as You sought to prepare Your first disciples, You’re seeking to prepare Your disciples today:

“But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. And the Gospel must first be preached to all the nations. But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit” (Mark 13:9-11).

We are Your disciples. We are the sheep of Your pasture. We are Your “ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20) as “the body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:27) filled with “the Spirit of Christ” in our world (Romans 8:9).

And we are to be ready to be expressions of Your word because we’ve heard Your voice: “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:11).

Elijah was a man with a nature like us. He listened and heard with humility from a place of intimacy, then he was able to pray with power and speak with authority. Your Word speaks of sending Elijah “before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord” (Malachi 4:5). And so You’re sending that same Spirit that was upon Elijah in his day, Your Holy Spirit, to be upon us in our day -- to draw us near, to fill us up, to send us forth from the place of intimacy into the place of authority (Ephesians 5:18). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be drawn into a deeper place of intimacy in prayer with humility before God that He may send you forth with the authority of His words as His Holy Spirit leads, in Jesus' name. God bless you!
