Morning by Morning, December 2 - “The God Who Spoke Still Speaks” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart to lead me in Your ways today. ... “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high...” (Hebrews 1:1-3). Father, thank You for speaking to us through Your prophets with words now sealed in the Scriptures of the Word of God. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:15-17). And at the same time, all that You have spoken through Your prophets and through the Word of God ultimately speaks of the One who is the Word of God -- our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ -- “His name is called The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13; John 1:1). He is “the Word (Who) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Lord Jesus, Word of God, Word made Flesh, thank You for coming and dwelling among us to reveal our Father’s heart, our Father’s nature, our Father’s word, our Father’s will as “the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person” (Hebrews 1:3). As You said: “I and the Father are One” (John 10:30). “No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.... I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me” (John 14:9-11). And now heavenly Father, dear Lord Jesus, You have come to abide in us by Your Holy Spirit, so that the Word of God has now been made flesh in us, in all who believe Your Word and receive Your Word. As You explained, Lord Jesus: “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever -- the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:16-17). “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.... The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance al things that I have said to you” (John 14:23-26). “He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you” (John 16:14). Come, Holy Spirit. One with our Father, One with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, come be One within us, within me. Bring the words of Jesus alive in me, the Word of God made Flesh in me. Teach me and bring to remembrance the words of Jesus, the Word of God, the words of life to me. As Jesus said, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). This is such a mystery, a mystery of faith and life in the Spirit and in the Word. “God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27) -- which is Christ in each one of us who believe, the Word of God speaking to us, living within us, made Flesh within us, the hope of glory -- Your glory displayed through us in this mystery of faith and all by Your grace. Keep speaking Your words of spirit and life to me and to all who will hear and trust and obey. Let Your words of spirit and life abide in us and flow through us each and every day, O Lord, my God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Fulfill the words of Jesus in us: “That they all may be one, as You Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You have Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me” (John 17:21-26). As a friend and mentor of mine Max Lucado often says, “The God who spoke still speaks. The God who forgave still forgives. The God who came still comes.” Lord, let it be so. Thank You, Lord, that it is so -- not just here at Christmas time, be each and every day for each and every one of us. Now “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with (us) all” (2 Corinthians 13:14). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
