Morning by Morning, November 1 - Governmental Authorities Perplexed by the Power of God through His Empowered People   Good morning, Lord Jesus. I open up my heart to You as You open up Your possibilities to me to follow in Your steps today everywhere You lead me. ...   “Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. Herod said, ‘John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?’ And he sought to see Him” (Luke 9:7-9).   Herod was the governmental authority in Israel, in submission to the governmental authority of Rome, which was the ruling governmental authority of the world at that time. And he “sought to see (You)” because of “all that was happening.” He was “perplexed” with this move of the power of God taking place in his realm of power and authority.   Not only was he perplexed by what he heard You were doing, he was perplexed by what he heard Your disciples were doing. The immediate verses of Scripture just before this passage describe “all that was happening”:   “And (Jesus) called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and He sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal. And He said to them, ‘Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.’ And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the Gospel and healing everywhere” (Luke 9:1-6).   Then the very next verse says: “Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed” (v. 7). And because he was perplexed, “he sought to see (You)” (v. 9).   Lord, let the governmental authorities of our community and our nation be “perplexed” by all that is happening through a move of God in our hearts that affects our communities and our nations. Let them be perplexed by the power of God over the powers of darkness and disease. The days are dark, and the culture is diseased. But You have given “power and authority” to Your disciples to make a difference.   When we take our stand and speak out our voices and live out Your character with the power and authority You’ve entrusted to us, we are salt and light in our world to make a difference in our world (Matthew 5:13-16). We “bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 3:9-10).   As we do, may even the governmental authorities who oppose us and this move of the power of God through manifestations of the coming of the Kingdom of God in our communities and nations be perplexed enough to seek You.   As we do, we experience a foretaste of the breakthroughs to come, of Your Kingdom breaking into our world, even now as we are faithful to You and all You have entrusted to us. We “have shared in the Holy Spirit and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come” (Hebrews 6:4-5).   So empower us, embolden us. Remind us of our calling to be salt and light, courageous and strong in the strength of Your power with the commission of Your authority to stand up and speak out against the darkness and disease of our society “preaching the Gospel and healing everywhere” (Luke 9:6).   As we do, we look forward to the fulfillment of Your prophetic Word in the age to come: “The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15) In Jesus’ name I pray. Morning by Morning, October 31 - “Hallowed Be Thy Name” is Our Declaration Rather Than Halloween Our Celebration   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Your name is above every name and everything (Philippians 2:9). So I speak out Your name over everything in my life and bring everything in my life into submission to the authority of Your name as I being my day looking to You. ...   As I write out the date for my morning prayer, I realize this is the day much of the world celebrates Halloween. There are many discussions about the spiritual roots relating the occultic practices, the appeasement of goblins and ghouls with treats, the wandering soul of Jack of the Lantern, the latter synchronization of the day into All Saints Eve, and the contemporary counter-celebrations of the great Harvest of souls coming into the Kingdom of God.   But what comes to my heart this morning is not the emphasis of the name Halloween but the call to reverence of the name of our God who is Hollowed. As You taught us to pray:   “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven” (Matthew 6:9-10).   Hallowed by Thy name, Father. Holy is Your name, Lord God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. “Hallowed by Thy Name” is my declaration rather than Halloween being my celebration.   On this day where darkness and death are celebrated, where fear and wickedness is glorified, I choose to glorify Your name and celebrate Your goodness and mercy to bring us life instead of death and faith instead of fear. Holy are You. Hallowed by Thy name.   “In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome It” (John 1:4-5).   “And this is the judgment: the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the Light and does not come to the Light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the Light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God” (John 3:19-21).   Thank You for the Light of Your glory that fills our hearts and cleanses our souls from all that’s glorified in this world apart from You.   “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).   On this day and every day, on this night and every night, let the Light of Your Glory arise and shine in Your people who are called by Your name (Isaiah 60:1-3). Let Your Light overcome the darkness and be a Lantern that leads every soul to You. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:16-17). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.   Be encouraged today! The Blessing of Rain from the Mercy of God - October 28, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, October 28 - The Blessing of Rain from the Mercy of God   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me hear Your voice in my heart and follow Your leading in my walk, as I begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit of God. ...   I woke up to “the sound of abundance of rain” this morning (1 Kings 18:41). In the days of Elijah there was drought in the land. And here in Fredericksburg, Texas, we’ve had our fourth driest year in 128 years. Lord, let it rain! Just like the worship song declares, “Open the flood gates of Heaven. Let it rain!”   I thank You, Lord, for the promise of this spiritual principle concerning the blessing of Your rain:   “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:43-45).   Your rain is a sign of Your mercy. Even when we don’t deserve it -- which we never do by any of our own goodness or righteousness apart from You. Even when we’re unjust and surrounded by the unjust, even when we’re acting in evil and surrounded by those who act in evil, You cause Your rain to fall and Your sun to rise.   The abundant rain and the consistent sun are blessings of God from the goodness of God whose heart is full of mercy and love for us all, whether we deserve it or not. And it’s usually “not.” But here’s the promise of Your Word and the expression of Your heart in one of my favorite Scriptures of all time:   “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;     His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning;     great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).   And our response:   ““The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul,     ‘therefore I will hope in Him’” (v. 24).   Your mercies are new this morning -- here in my community and here in my heart -- on the just and the unjust, on the good and the evil. And may this blessing of Your abundant mercy and steadfast love turn hearts and souls to You, to put our hope and faith in You alone. “Great is Thy faithfulness. Great is Thy faithfulness. Morning by Morning, new mercies I see.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.   Be encouraged today! Morning by Morning, October 27 - Fiery Trials Produce Fearless Followers of Christ   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and every moment of my day. ...   “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when His glory is revealed” (1 Peter 4:12-13).   Fiery trials purify our hearts and fashion our character. Fiery trials reveal our hearts and expose our character. And fiery trials make us more like You, as we “share Christ’s sufferings” and reveal Christ’s glory. Fiery trials produce fearless followers of Christ. That’s another dimension of understanding our true identity in Christ and the true Identity of Christ in us -- “Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).   We can’t have a testimony without the tests. We can’t be victorious unless we’ve fought some battles. We can’t be overcomers unless we’ve overcome some challenges. And we can’t be more than conquerors unless we’ve conquered what was set before us on our journey into our personal promised land.   None of that’s in our power. In fact, that’s the point -- to learn that apart from You, we can do nothing -- nothing lasting, nothing of significance, nothing of eternal meaning. That’s how we learn what’s just “wood, hay, and stubble” and what’s “gold, silver, and precious stones” among the moments and the meaning of our lives here in this short sliver of time we have between life and death on this earth with our one opportunity to allow You to make us more like You (1 Corinthians 3:12). “Each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done” (1 Corinthians 3:13).   So I thank You for the Fire. And I thank You that You’re right here with me through fiery trials, just as You promised:   “Fear not, for I have redeemed you;     I have called you by name, you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;     and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,     and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God,     the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (Isaiah 43:1-3).   Though there are times when it seems like it gets almost too hot to bear, when it seems all-consuming, unrelenting. Yet that’s just what we need, as You burn everything out of us that is not yet like You, “for our God is a consuming Fire” (Hebrews 12:29). And that’s just what You promised, as John said of You:   “I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and Fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will clear his threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn, but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable Fire” (Matthew 3:11-12).   The same Fire that brings the power of God is the same Fire that brings the holiness of God, the character of Christ in us -- here in our hearts and here in our lives, wholly surrendered and committed to You.   So I pray for Your grace to embrace the Fire and endure the fiery trials, as You make me more like You each day (Romans 8:29; 1 John 4:17).   “In this (we) rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, (we) have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of (our) faith -- more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though (we) have not seen Him, (we) love Him. Though (we) do not now see Him, (we) believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of (our) faith, the salvation of (our) souls” (1 Peter 1:6-9). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.   Be encouraged today!
