Morning by Morning, August 17, 2026 — “The God Who Answers by Fire”
Good morning, Lord Jesus. I open my heart to listen for Your voice, for Your sheep hear Your voice and follow You (John 10:27). …
As I wait, I hear the words of Elijah rising up in my heart:
“I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God” (1 Kings 18:24).
You are the God who answers by fire. “For our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29).
To be honest, sometimes, we want You to consume our enemies with Your fire—whether foreign or domestic, whether on the other side of the world or even a little closer to home. But where we need Your consuming fire the most is right here in our own hearts.
Lord God, consume everything in me that’s not yet like You. Burn everything out of me that hinders me from seeing You as You are and myself as I am, from hearing Your heart and following Your voice.
You are “a refiner’s fire,” seeking to purge our hearts “as gold and silver” that we may offer our hearts to You and You alone “in righteousness” (Malachi 3:2-3). You burn away the “wood, hay, and straw” that’s less than Your heart in our lives if we’ll open our hearts and surrender our hearts to You and Your holy fire (1 Corinthians 3:12). You burn up “the chaff with (Your) unquenchable fire” if we will allow You to “baptize (us) with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11-12).
Come, Holy Spirit. Baptize me anew in Your Spirit and Your Holy Fire. Burn everything out of me that’s not yet like You. And set me ablaze with Your Heart and Your Spirit to make me more like You today. For You are the God who answers by Fire! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
