“Come Up Here” -- Invitation to Intimacy - May 5, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, May 5 - “Come Up Here” -- Invitation to Intimacy Good morning, Lord Jesus. Your sheep hear Your voice. And I’m listening for Your leading, as I seek to begin my day with my spirit in communion with Your Spirit -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... As I wait and listen, it seems I hear in my heart, “Come up here with Me.” ... Yes, Lord. As I think about what that means, a funny thought comes to mind: “Not up on your roof in the physical realm. Up here with Me in the spiritual realm. Worship and pray in spirit and truth. Seek Me and embrace Me in spirit and truth. Your human spirit arising into the intimacy of My embrace -- spirit to Spirit, heart to Heart, deep to Deep. Up here in the heavenly realm of your heart united with My heart and your spirit communing with My Spirit.” ... Yes, Lord. As I seek to test and discern whether I’m hearing Your voice or just my own thoughts, Your Word comes to mind: “After this I looked, and there in heaven a door stood open! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, ‘Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.’ At once I was in the spirit...” (Revelation 4:1-2). And this Word comes to my remembrance: “But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which He loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ -- by grace you have been saved -- and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus...” (Ephesians 2:4-6). Thank, my Father, for Your invitation to come up here with You “in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Thank You for this “great love with which (You) loved (me) even when (I was) dead through (my) trespasses, (You’ve) made (me) alive together with Christ.” By Your Holy Spirit, You “raised (me) up with Him” on the day I was saved, but You also want to raise me up right now into the intimate embrace of Your Presence “in the heavenly places” of the spiritual realm “up here” with You. Here I come, Lord. Up here with You -- spirit to Spirit, heart to Heart, deep to Deep. For “anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him” (1 Corinthians 6:17). So I “worship (You) in spirit and truth” and pursue You in this time of deep communion of contemplative prayer “in spirit and truth” (John 4:23). What a wonderful gift You’ve given me, and all who embrace Your invitation to intimacy, to begin my day “up here” with You. And thank You for the gift that I don’t have to leave this place “up here” with You as I get up out of my prayer chair and go on with my day, because I’m not “up here” with You on my roof; I’m “up here” with You in my heart. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! All About You - May 4, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, May 4 - All About You Good morning, Lord Jesus. Take me by the heart and lead me by Your Spirit into all You have for me today -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “For ‘In Him we live and move and have our being’” (Acts 17:28). It’s in You that we live. It’s in You that we move. It’s in You that we have our being. You move me and live through me. You put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart. You open the doors before me and send Your favor toward me. You’re with me always, guiding me always, into all You have for me and all You are in me. As King David discovered long ago, I’m discovering more every day. And right now my words can’t express what I’m trying to say and to pray any better than his words, eternally recorded in Psalm 139: “O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up;     You discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down,     and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue,     O Lord, You know it completely. You hem me in, behind and before,     and lay Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;     it is so high that I cannot attain it. Where can I go from Your Spirit?     Or where can I flee from Your Presence? If I ascend to Heaven, You are there;     if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning     and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me,     and Your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me,     and the light around me become night,’ even the darkness is not dark to You;     the night is as bright as the day,     for darkness is as light to You. For it was You who formed my inward parts;     You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.     Wonderful are Your works; that I know very well.      My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret,     intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In Your book were written     all the days that were formed for me,     when none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are Your thoughts, O God!     How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them--they are more than the sand;     I come to the end--I am still with You” (Psalm 139:1-24). Everlasting God. Ever-present God. God who sees every moment, every thought, every desire, every level and depth of my being -- and yet loves me and leads me, forgives me and empowers me to be all You’ve created me and called me to be in You.  The truth I’m discovering is that everything about me is ultimately all about You. “For in (You), (I) live and move and have my being.” In Jesus’ name I pray. “We Arrived” and at the Same Time, We’re Still on the Journey - May 3, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, May 3 - “We Arrived” and at the Same Time, We’re Still on the Journey Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ... “When we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us warmly. The next day Paul went with us to visit James; and all the elders were present. After greeting them, he related one by one the things that God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry. When they heard it, they praised God!” (Acts 21:17-20) Step by step, season by season, all along our journey, we praise God for all You do in our lives and through the ministry You entrust to each of us. All glory, honor, and praise belong to You. And we thank You that we get to be a part of all You’re doing in our days! Sometimes the battles are intense and the challenges almost overwhelming. But it’s all in Your plan to help us learn to love, to grow in grace, to surrender more of our will to more of Your will, as our ways become more like Your ways. “For this is the will of God, (our) sanctification” (1 Thessalonians 4:3).  And this is the way of God, to teach us through the moments of real time to experience what’s it really like to truly trust in You and depend upon You for every breath, every provision, and every expression of Your nature through our lives in our world. “As He is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17). We’re to “grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ” through all we endure and overcome, through all we celebrate and embrace, “until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-16). “Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). This weekend, my wife Rocio and I made the move from San Antonio to Fredericksburg. We’ve been welcomed warmly! Now among old friends and new, we’re excited to see all You will do! May we receive and may we impart, as we grow in grace right from the start! “We arrived” and at the same time, we’re still on the journey! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Moving Day - April 30, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, April 30 - Moving Day Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be my Vision and my Light, as You lead me by Your Spirit on every step of my journey -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ So Abram went, as the Lord had told him...” (Genesis 12:1-4). Today is moving day. From San Antonio to Fredericksburg, from the big city to a small town. It’s not too far as the crow flies, but it’s the next step of our journey as the Spirit leads. We’ll still be very connected with friends and ministry here, but also embracing new friends and new opportunities of ministry there. It’s the home of Fredericksburg peaches and the heart of the Texas wine country. And we pray for a new season of the fresh fruit of Your Spirit (Galatians 5:22), as You pour Your New Wine into the new wineskins of the home and community You’ve set apart for us there (Mark 2:22). We’re not Abraham and Sarah, but we are praying to be a blessing to everyone we meet and everywhere we go. So as we pack up and “go” to land You’ve shown us, we thank You for the good seed You’ve sown in us here and the good fruit You’ve brought forth here. We’re excited to see what lies ahead. And we’re confident of Your promise for all who trust and obey to follow Your leading -- as best as we can and all by Your grace -- that the best is yet to come (Haggai 2:9). “As it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love Him’ -- these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10).  Holy Spirit, be with us today and lead us on today. We thank You, Father God, for all that lies behind and now we take hold of all that lies ahead. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Casting Down Our Crowns - April 29, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, April 29 - Casting Down Our Crowns Good morning, Lord Jesus. King of kings and Lord of lords, be the King of my heart and the Lord of my life -- this day and every day. ... “Day and night without ceasing they sing, ‘Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God the Almighty,     who was and is and is to come. And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the One who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall before the One who is seated on the throne and worship the One who lives forever and ever; they cast their crowns before the throne, singing, ‘You are worthy, our Lord and God,     to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things,     and by Your will they existed and were created’”  (Revelation 4:8-11). You are worthy of it all. You’re worthy to receive all glory and honor and power. You’re worthy to receive all my worship, thanksgiving, and surrender. I’m still learning about the “crowns” and all that means in our lives and spiritual journey with You. It seems there are many “crowns” mentioned in Your Word: the “imperishable crown” (1 Corinthians 9:25), the “crown of rejoicing” (1 Thessalonians 2:19), the “crown of righteousness” (2 Timothy 4:8), the “crown of glory” (1 Peter 5:4), and the “crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).  By the mercy of Your grace and the mystery of faith, we are “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation” (1 Peter 2:9). You have “made us to be a kingdom and priests to our God and (we) will reign upon the earth” (Revelation 5:10). “Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:6). I have so much to learn, but this I know: Whatever “crowns” there are, whatever “crowns” may ever be entrusted to me by the grace of God, You alone are worthy to receive all “glory and honor and power” -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. You alone are worthy to receive our worship and praise. And one day You alone we see every crown we’ll ever have cast down at Your feet before Your throne.  You are worthy of it all, O “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:16). May You be crowned with many crowns -- here in my heart and throughout my world. For one day we will see this Word completely fulfilled: “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Strengthened in the Lord for the Battle - April 28, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, April 28 - Strengthened in the Lord for the Battle Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lift me up into the embrace of Your Presence -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- as I begin me day in deep communion with You. ... “Now when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negeb and on Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag, burned it down, and taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great; they killed none of them, but carried them off, and went their way. When David and his men came to the city, they found it burned down, and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept, until they had no more strength to weep. David’s two wives also had been taken captive, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. David was in great danger; for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in spirit for their sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God” (1 Samuel 30:1-6). David was already weary from the battles. Then he was shocked and dismayed at the loss of all he held dear and all that was entrusted to his care. Everyone with him wept and cried out in aguish and grief, nearing hopeless despair for all that their enemies had done to them. Then, in great danger of betrayal and blame, David was nearly stoned to death as everyone’s rage and pain was turned against him. More than a bad day, it was maybe David’s worse day. But “David strengthened himself in the Lord his God” (v.6). He turned to You. In the humility of desperate dependence upon You alone, He “inquired of the Lord” (v. 8). He waited on You for Your answer, Your wisdom, Your guidance. And then he obeyed everything he heard, as best as he could and all by Your grace. You called him to get up from his grief and be girded up with faith to “pursue” his enemies until he had taken back all that was stolen from him and from all entrusted to his care (v. 9). Some were too weary to go with him. Maybe some were too mad at him to go with him. But he gathered those who were of one heart with his to trust God and obey, and “went on with the pursuit” (v. 10). By the power and the grace of God, David found his enemies, still gloating over their plunder (v. 16). And with unrelenting faith in the word of the Lord and the power of Your might, he and his men engaged their enemies in the fierce courage that only You can supply, until “not one of them escaped” (v. 17). He took back all that was taken. “Nothing was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that had been take. David brought back everything” (v. 19). Your Word says that all that happened to those under the Old Covenant in former times and all that happened in the battles and struggles against their enemies of flesh and blood speak to us of the spiritual principles in our battles against our spiritual enemies today. Their struggles and battles, their failures and successes, “serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come” (1 Corinthians 10:11). “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). So come, Holy Spirit. Teach me Your ways. Teach me how to “strengthen myself in the Lord” like David did. No matter how desperate the times, how disappointing and devastating the failures I face or the battles I’m in, You’re always drawing me to a deeper place of humility in You -- desperately depending upon You alone.
