Morning by Morning, August 19 - Loving Correction of a True Friend Good morning, Lord Jesus. I seek Your face and trust in Your grace to seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit. ... “Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful” (Proverbs 27:5-6). As expressed in the Easy English Bible Version of these Verses: “When a friend is not afraid to warn you that you are wrong,     it shows that he really loves you. You can trust a friend when he says things that hurt you.     But when an enemy kisses you, he is deceiving you” (Proverbs 27:5-6 EASY). Thank You for true friends who will speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Though they may wound our hearts in the moment, we can trust a true friend’s correction when spoken in honesty and love. When they love You and their hearts are surrendered to Your heart, their words are an expression of Your words, just as their heart is an expression of Your heart. So we can receive the correction, even embrace the rebuke, as a means of Your grace to help us learn and grow. And that’s the point--to learn and grow up into the image of Christ, to be conformed to the image of the Son of God (Romans 8:29). We’ll always need Your conviction and correction on our spiritual journey into Christ-likeness—"until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13). Where I’ve fallen short, where I’ve disappointed, where I’ve failed, help me learn from my mistakes of failing to love my friends as I should. And through repentance and prayer, saturated in mercy and love, may You make my true friendships even stronger than before, as You redeem all things and set all things right again (Romans 8:28). “As iron sharpens iron, So a (a person) sharpens the countenance of (their) friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Thank You for the iron—even when the blade is sharp and forged in fire, but coming from the heart of a true friend who loves You and loves me. Thank You that “Love bears all things, believes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:7). Thank You that “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8). And even though I do sometimes, You never do. You never have and You never will. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; (Your) mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is (Your) faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, August 15 - Reflections of Glory Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart, as I embrace “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16) and embrace You as “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). ... As I wait on You--embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, filled afresh with the Holy Spirit--this Word comes to mind: “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). As we behold You, we are reflections of Your glory. As we behold You, You are changing us, transforming us into Your “same image from glory to glory.” We can’t do it. But You can. And You do--by Your Spirit, “by the Spirit of the Lord.” And one of the ways You do it is by removing the “veils” from our faces. You remove the barriers between us, the distortions of how we see You and how we see ourselves, the beliefs and attitudes that confuse us and deceive us from allowing us to know the truth of who You are and who You are in us. Come, Holy Spirit. Spirit of the Lord, come remove any veils from my face, from my heart. Let me see You as You are--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God--“with unveiled face” as I behold You and worship You in spirit and truth. “The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23-24). You deserve all my worship. And at the same time, You’re using even my worship of You to change me into Your image, to make me more like You--“from glory to glory”--as I behold You “with unveiled face.” As You are, so am I to be in my world (1 John 4:17). You’re at work in me to conform me into the image of the Son of God (Romans 8:29). By the power of Your grace at work within me, may I become a reflection of Your glory in my world, along with every one of Your sons and daughters who are disciples of Christ and even “ambassadors for Christ” to display Your glory in our world (2 Corinthians 5:20). By the liberty and power and grace of Your Holy Spirit, as You remove the veils from our faces, may we “Arise, shine; for (our) Light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon (us)!” (Isaiah 60:1) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, August 12 - “If the Lord Wills,” then Let It Be My Will

 

Morning by Morning, August 12 - “If the Lord Wills,” then Let It Be My Will Good morning, Lord Jesus. Grounded in Your Word, filled with Your Spirit, I draw near to You as You draw near to me--here in my heart and here in my day (James 4:8). ... “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that’” (James 4:13-15). Too much of the time, I go about the moments of my day making my own decisions for my life as if I know best. But the truth is I don’t know best. Only You know best. “Instead (I) ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, (I) shall live and do this or that’” (v. 15). I ought to say, “If the Lord wills, then let it be my will.” Help me be more humble. Help me recognize and repent of my pride of insisting on my will apart from Your will, my lordship instead of Your Lordship, me being in control instead of entrusting control to You. Help me set aside my pride of insisting on my own will and my own way, to do whatever I want to do whenever I want to do it, in my own power by my own wisdom. You resist the proud, but give grace to the humble (v. 6). Give me Your grace to humble myself to first take time to seek Your wisdom and Your will before just trusting and insistingly on my way. As I humble myself to willingly choose to be desperately dependent upon You alone, then I’ll have receive the blessing, guidance, power, and favor of the One who knows best in all I am and in all I’ll do. As I humble myself in Your sight, then You will lift me up, then You will guide my steps and direct my path--day by day, one step at a time (James 4:10). According to ancient wisdom of Your Word: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones” (Proverbs 3:5-6). As You said so simply so long ago, You continue to speak into the hearts of all who will listen today: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Yes, Lord. I seek You first--first in humility rather than pride, first in seeking Your will and Your plan for my day and all the decisions along the way rather than insisting on my own. Come lift me up into Your Presence and into Your will, as I trust in You and acknowledge You as the One who knows all about me, who knows what’s best for me, and who knows what’s best for all You’ll do through me this day and every day. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, August 8 - Seeds of the Kingdom

 

Morning by Morning, August 8 - Seeds of the Kingdom   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let my spirit arise into communion with You--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--as my soul yields in mind, will, and emotions, along with my body, to wait and listen and follow Your leading (1 Thessalonians 5:23; Romans 8:14). ... As I wait for Your leading this morning, this Scripture comes to mind: “And (Jesus) said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come’” (Mark 4:26-29). In many ways, we have no idea what You’re doing with the “seeds” You’ve sown through our lives. Here a seed of kindness, there a word of encouragement, a simple smile, a good laugh, a helping hand, a heart-felt prayer, a proclamation in the authority of Your name according to Your will--these are seeds of the kingdom You’re sowing in love and power in the hearts of people and even in the earth through our lives. Sometimes we may get to see those seeds sprout up quickly in evidence of an immediate harvest. But it seems most of the time, we’re more like the farmer who sows the seeds and then patiently waits for the harvest to come, trusting in faith those seeds are growing to fulfill at that’s intended, even though hidden at the present. Seed. Time. Harvest. First the seed, then the time, then the harvest. But from the planting until the harvest, from the sowing to the reaping, You are at work in all You have sown through us. And every seed of Your kingdom will grow through the process--little by little, set by step, day by day until one day the shoot springs up out of the ground for all to see. Then it continues to grow: “first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head” until the time “the harvest has come” (v. 28-29). These seeds of Your kingdom are just like the word of Your will “that goes forth” and “shall not return to (You) void,” but “shall accomplish what (You) please” and “shall prosper in the thing for which (You) sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). These seeds are growing and working and accomplishing Your purposes, even when we don’t see it, even as we just have to trust in faith to believe it. But You do give us grace to believe it. You give us the grace to “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Whether we get to see the full “harvest” of these seeds of the kingdom here on earth or one day from heaven, even right now You can give us the grace to see those seeds in harvest with eyes of faith from the perspective of heaven. Your part is to cause those seeds You have sown through us to grow up to maturity; our part is to sow as You lead and “only believe” (Mark 5:36). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, August 8 - Home Good morning, Lord Jesus. You are “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6). Come lead the way in my life today. ... “Then the disciples went away again to their own homes” (John 20:10). Your first disciples encountered You at the empty tomb. And before their next encounter with You at the upper room, they went “to their own homes.” After my own encounters with You--moving in Your healing love and resurrection power in deep inner healing and spiritual freedom, here and abroad--it’s good to be home again. After traveling for back-to-back ministry in Tennessee and Colombia, next we’ll be leaving at the end of the month for ministry in Pakistan for more encounters with You among the nations. But right now, it’s good to be home. Right now, it’s good to encounter You right here in my heart, in my own home--Heart to heart, Spirit to spirit, Deep to deep--in the restful and deep Presence of the Lord. Be at home, here in my heart, Lord, as You allow my heart to be at home in You. You always invite us all, as Your disciples and ambassadors--whether at home or to the nations--to rest in You, to be refreshed and renewed in You. When we’re at home with You in our hearts, “(Your) yoke is easy and (Your) burden is light” as You welcome us all to rest in You: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28-30). As my heart is full of all You’ve done and will continue to do, right here, right now, it’s good to rest in You--right here at home, right here abiding in the deep place of Your Presence (John 15:4).
