Morning by Morning, November 12 - Identity and Authority Entrusted to the Children of God
Good morning, Lord Jesus. My Lord and Savior, King of kings and Lord of lords, come rule and reign in my heart and my life today. ...
“O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
You have set Your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
You have founded a bulwark because of Your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
the moon and the stars that You have established;
what are human beings that You are mindful of them,
mortals that You care for them?
Yet You have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is Your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1-9)
You are our Sovereign Lord, O God. There is none like You. How majestic is Your name in all the earth!
And yet, in Your sovereignty, You have chosen to create humanity in Your image -- “in the image of God” (Genesis 1:27). And You’ve entrusted “dominion” of the earth into our hands (Genesis 1:26).
“The heavens are the Lord’s heavens,
but the earth He has given to human beings” (Psalm 115:16).
And when Your Word speaks of how mindful of us You are and of our place in Your creation, Psalm 8, verse 5 declares, “You have made (us) a little lower than God, and crowned (us) with glory and honor.” Redeemed from our fall through the Blood of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, Your Word in Romans 8 affirms our extraordinary place of honor, identity, authority, responsibility, and dominion in Your sight under our New Covenant in Christ, as You declare we are “children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and join heirs with Christ -- if, in fact, we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him” (Romans 8:16-17).
That’s astounding, astonishing, so hard for our human minds to fully comprehend and grasp, let alone accept as our true identity and priceless significance in Your sight.
Even in the some of the translations of the Bible in Psalm 8:5 that declares we are created “a little lower than God,” it has been translated we are created “a little lower than the angels” (KJV). But the key word being translated from Hebrew is the word Elohim, which means God, not angels. It’s the same Hebrew word from Genesis 1:27, declaring we are created “in the image of Elohim” -- “in the image of God” not “in the image of angels.”
O Lord, give us grace to see ourselves as You see us. With the eyes of heaven and the Father heart of God -- not through the eyes of our insecurities and self-deprecations. You have redeemed us by Your blood and called us by Your name as children of God -- not by anything we have done, but by all that You have done.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which He loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ -- by grace (we) have been saved -- and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:4-7).
What is man that You are mindful of us? And yet You are. Not only mindful, but merciful. And not only merciful, but honoring us and establishing us even as children of God, created and redeemed to the image of God and entrust by God to a place of dominion over the earth, with “the keys of the kingdom of heaven” You’ve placed in our hands, so that not even “the gates of hell” can prevail against us with Your Spirit in our hearts and the authority of Your name on our lips (Matthew 16:18-20 and 18:18-20; Romans 8:11).
Your Word even declares that we are to “judge the world” and even “judge angels” (1 Corinthians 6:2-3). Even the angels are “spirits in divine service, sent to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation” (Hebrews 1:14). They are “mighty ones who do (Your) bidding, obedient to (Your) spoken word (Psalm 103:21).
So give us grace to hear Your words in humility and speak Your words with authority, as You grow us up “to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ,” growing up “in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-16). Give us grace to believe and honor Your Word speaking of the extraordinary place of identity and authority You’ve entrusted to us in Christ:
“Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen!” (1 Peter 4:10-11) In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
