Morning by Morning, November 16 - “Praying in the Holy Spirit”
Good morning, Lord Jesus. My eyes are on You, as I seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ...
“But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 1:17-21).
These are those days. This is that, which was spoken of long ago. These are days of mockery and division, full of those who walk by their own ungodly lusts and demand we do the same.
But You call us to keep ourselves in the love of God. You call us to keep building ourselves up in our most holy faith. And You call us to keep praying in the Holy Spirit.
When we’re “praying in the Holy Spirit,” we’re praying Your perfect prayers, we’re praying according to Your will, as You release Your word from Your Spirit through our spirits into our world.
As Your Word explains, it takes humility and faith to pray that way: “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:26-27)
As You explained though the Apostle Paul in Your Word, we must surrender our control to Your control, as You pray Your will through Your words of Your Spirit, being prayed through our spirits: “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unproductive. What should I do then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will sing praise with the mind also” (1 Corinthians 14:14-15).
Come, Holy Spirit. Move in our spirits to pray according to the word and the will of God. Unite us from division. Empower us to stand firm in the face of the mockery and muck of the lusts of this world. Strengthen us in our most holy faith in the ways that only You can do. Come pray Your perfect prayers through us -- For You know what is the will of our Father and long to come release the will of God in our world through the Spirit-filled, Spirit-led prayers of God’s people.
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with (us) all” (2 Corinthians 12:14). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
