First and Foremost - May 10, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, May 10 - First and Foremost Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let my spirit arise in worship and praise to You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- as I begin my day in right alignment: First the spirit. Then the soul. Then the body. ... “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you” (Matthew 6:33). Before I study my calendar and all I’ll do today, I seek You first. Before I go through my correspondence and phone messages, my bills and my blessings, I seek You first. Even before I get out my list of prayers and needs, of battles to fight and souls to win, I seek You first. It’s not that I won’t try to practice the presence of God throughout the moments of my day and with every breath I breathe. But at the same time, I want to give You first place in my heart, first place in my thoughts. I want Your name to be the first thought in my mind and the first word from my mouth, as I deliberately, intentionally, begin my day focused upon You before anything else. Then when the struggles and challenges of the day come, when the pressures of the problems start to build, when “the evil one comes (trying to) snatch away what was sown in (my) heart,” I’m already steadfast in You, taking hold of the One who has taken hold of me (Matthew 13:19). I’m already “rooted and grounded” in You, “filled with all the fullness of God” because I already began my day with You and entrusted my day to You (Ephesians 3:14-19). “Like a tree planted by the waters” I shall not be moved (Jeremiah 17:8). I’m already abiding in You and You’re abiding in me (John 15:4). I’m already “filled with the Spirit” before the world, the flesh, and the devil try to fill my plate with all the tyranny of the urgency and the perceived priority of everything else besides You and Your Kingdom and Your righteousness (Ephesians 5:18). So thank You for the gift of giving my first focus to You. I’m only responding to Your invitation (Matthew 11:28). I’m only giving my first love and attention to the One who first loved me (1 John 4:19). So here I am to worship. Here I am to welcome You here in my heart right now and into every moment of my day -- first and foremost. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! First the Spirit -- Dividing “Soul from Spirit” - May 7, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, May 7 - First the Spirit -- Dividing “Soul from Spirit” Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift up my heart and open up my spirit to welcome You into every dimension of my being and every area of my life -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). Lord, let Your living word cut through any spiritual dullness or hardness of heart, dividing “soul from spirit” to set things right within me as I begin my day in You. Expose my “thoughts and the intentions of (my) heart” and align my thoughts with Your thoughts and my desires with Your desires -- now and throughout the moments of my day. From a Biblical perspective of our human nature, we are “spirit and soul and body” (1 Thessalonians 5:23). According to Your Word these are the three dimensions of our being: “May the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and bodybe kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do this (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).  First the spirit. Then the soul. Then the body. There's a right alignment of every dimension of our being that affects every dimension of our lives. And through the years of my spiritual journey with You, You’ve been teaching me that understanding each part of our being and how each part is to relate to the others, according to Your created order and perfect plan for the peaceful, joyful fulfillment of our lives, is such a strategic key of the Kingdom of God. Our human spirit should abide in deep communion with Your Holy Spirit. Then our human spirit—infused and led by the Holy Spirit—should direct the mind, will, and emotions of our human soul, which should manifest in the health and well-being of our human bodies. All is well with my soul when all is well with my spirit. All is well with my body when all is well with my soul. But for all to be well, I must learn to allow Your Holy Spirit to correctly align my spirit and soul and body: First the spirit. Then the soul. Then the body. When I’m correctly aligned with my human spirit first, I can live out my daily journey with more spiritual health and growing maturity, being fulfilled with more peace and joy, and walking in the wisdom of God instead of the ways of the world. In right alignment, my human spirit which is receiving my sense of guidance and discernment by abiding in communion with Your Holy Spirit, directs my soul. My soul is my mind, will, and emotions. So my spirit -- in communion with Your Spirit -- should direct my mind and how I think, my will and the choices I make, my emotions and how I sense and feel and experience the world around me. Then then my soul should direct my body.  In right alignment, my body manifests what’s going on in my soul; and my soul manifests what’s going on in my spirit; and my spirit manifests my abiding relationship with Your Holy Spirit. First the spirit. Then then the soul. Then the body. This is what I’ve come to understand as “Spiritual Alignment” or walking out my spiritual journey as a “Spiritual Christian.” But the trouble is that much of the time I can be tempted to live out my daily life in a different order than Your created order. Instead of living in right alignment, the pull of the world, the flesh, and the devil draws me to live out of a wrong alignment. First the soul, instead of first the spirit. First the soul. Then the spirit. Then the body. That’s what I’ve come to understand as “Soulish Alignment” or walking out my spiritual journey as a “Soulish Christian.” In that wrong order, when I’m out of proper alignment, I am more “soulish” than “spiritual.” And all will not be well with my soul.  In the Soulish Alignment, I’m driven more by my own desires in the mind, will, and emotions of my soul rather than humbling myself to be led by Your Holy Spirit directing my human spirit. When I’m in Soulish Alignment, my mind insists on my own thoughts instead of yielding to Your thoughts. My human freewill insists on my own will instead of yielding to Your will. And my emotions insist on driving my actions by reacting from my soul instead of responding by the leading of my spirit being led by Your Holy Spirit. Whether my spirit is the place of authority and in charge, directing my soul, or whether my soul is in the place of authority and in charge, suppressing my spirit, makes all the difference. So come, Holy Spirit, and set things right in me today. As I worship You “in spirit and truth,” You cause my human spirit to arise into the place of communion with Your Holy Spirit (John 4:23). As I wait on You in the silence of surrender, to wait for Your leading in contemplative prayer, You cause my human spirit to ascend to place of authority and in charge, as my soul yields to my spirit, and as my spirit yields to Your Spirit (Isaiah 40:31).  First the spirit. Then the soul. Then the body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Thank You, Lord, for helping me begin my day with things set right in my soul. Right now, all is well with my soul. And now I pray for Your grace to keep living into the rest of my day in this right order of Spiritual Alignment instead of Soulish Alignment: First the spirit. Then the soul. Then the body. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “Come Up Here” -- Invitation to Intimacy - May 5, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, May 5 - “Come Up Here” -- Invitation to Intimacy Good morning, Lord Jesus. Your sheep hear Your voice. And I’m listening for Your leading, as I seek to begin my day with my spirit in communion with Your Spirit -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... As I wait and listen, it seems I hear in my heart, “Come up here with Me.” ... Yes, Lord. As I think about what that means, a funny thought comes to mind: “Not up on your roof in the physical realm. Up here with Me in the spiritual realm. Worship and pray in spirit and truth. Seek Me and embrace Me in spirit and truth. Your human spirit arising into the intimacy of My embrace -- spirit to Spirit, heart to Heart, deep to Deep. Up here in the heavenly realm of your heart united with My heart and your spirit communing with My Spirit.” ... Yes, Lord. As I seek to test and discern whether I’m hearing Your voice or just my own thoughts, Your Word comes to mind: “After this I looked, and there in heaven a door stood open! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, ‘Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.’ At once I was in the spirit...” (Revelation 4:1-2). And this Word comes to my remembrance: “But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which He loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ -- by grace you have been saved -- and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus...” (Ephesians 2:4-6). Thank, my Father, for Your invitation to come up here with You “in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” Thank You for this “great love with which (You) loved (me) even when (I was) dead through (my) trespasses, (You’ve) made (me) alive together with Christ.” By Your Holy Spirit, You “raised (me) up with Him” on the day I was saved, but You also want to raise me up right now into the intimate embrace of Your Presence “in the heavenly places” of the spiritual realm “up here” with You. Here I come, Lord. Up here with You -- spirit to Spirit, heart to Heart, deep to Deep. For “anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him” (1 Corinthians 6:17). So I “worship (You) in spirit and truth” and pursue You in this time of deep communion of contemplative prayer “in spirit and truth” (John 4:23). What a wonderful gift You’ve given me, and all who embrace Your invitation to intimacy, to begin my day “up here” with You. And thank You for the gift that I don’t have to leave this place “up here” with You as I get up out of my prayer chair and go on with my day, because I’m not “up here” with You on my roof; I’m “up here” with You in my heart. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! All About You - May 4, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, May 4 - All About You Good morning, Lord Jesus. Take me by the heart and lead me by Your Spirit into all You have for me today -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “For ‘In Him we live and move and have our being’” (Acts 17:28). It’s in You that we live. It’s in You that we move. It’s in You that we have our being. You move me and live through me. You put Your thoughts in my mind and Your desires in my heart. You open the doors before me and send Your favor toward me. You’re with me always, guiding me always, into all You have for me and all You are in me. As King David discovered long ago, I’m discovering more every day. And right now my words can’t express what I’m trying to say and to pray any better than his words, eternally recorded in Psalm 139: “O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up;     You discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down,     and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue,     O Lord, You know it completely. You hem me in, behind and before,     and lay Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;     it is so high that I cannot attain it. Where can I go from Your Spirit?     Or where can I flee from Your Presence? If I ascend to Heaven, You are there;     if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning     and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me,     and Your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me,     and the light around me become night,’ even the darkness is not dark to You;     the night is as bright as the day,     for darkness is as light to You. For it was You who formed my inward parts;     You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.     Wonderful are Your works; that I know very well.      My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret,     intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In Your book were written     all the days that were formed for me,     when none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are Your thoughts, O God!     How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them--they are more than the sand;     I come to the end--I am still with You” (Psalm 139:1-24). Everlasting God. Ever-present God. God who sees every moment, every thought, every desire, every level and depth of my being -- and yet loves me and leads me, forgives me and empowers me to be all You’ve created me and called me to be in You.  The truth I’m discovering is that everything about me is ultimately all about You. “For in (You), (I) live and move and have my being.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “We Arrived” and at the Same Time, We’re Still on the Journey - May 3, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, May 3 - “We Arrived” and at the Same Time, We’re Still on the Journey Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ... “When we arrived in Jerusalem, the brothers welcomed us warmly. The next day Paul went with us to visit James; and all the elders were present. After greeting them, he related one by one the things that God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry. When they heard it, they praised God!” (Acts 21:17-20) Step by step, season by season, all along our journey, we praise God for all You do in our lives and through the ministry You entrust to each of us. All glory, honor, and praise belong to You. And we thank You that we get to be a part of all You’re doing in our days! Sometimes the battles are intense and the challenges almost overwhelming. But it’s all in Your plan to help us learn to love, to grow in grace, to surrender more of our will to more of Your will, as our ways become more like Your ways. “For this is the will of God, (our) sanctification” (1 Thessalonians 4:3).  And this is the way of God, to teach us through the moments of real time to experience what’s it really like to truly trust in You and depend upon You for every breath, every provision, and every expression of Your nature through our lives in our world. “As He is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17). We’re to “grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ” through all we endure and overcome, through all we celebrate and embrace, “until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-16). “Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). This weekend, my wife Rocio and I made the move from San Antonio to Fredericksburg. We’ve been welcomed warmly! Now among old friends and new, we’re excited to see all You will do! May we receive and may we impart, as we grow in grace right from the start! “We arrived” and at the same time, we’re still on the journey! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
