The Blessing of Rain from the Mercy of God - October 28, 2022

Morning by Morning, October 28 - The Blessing of Rain from the Mercy of God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me hear Your voice in my heart and follow Your leading in my walk, as I begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit of God. ...

I woke up to “the sound of abundance of rain” this morning (1 Kings 18:41). In the days of Elijah there was drought in the land. And here in Fredericksburg, Texas, we’ve had our fourth driest year in 128 years. Lord, let it rain! Just like the worship song declares, “Open the flood gates of Heaven. Let it rain!”

I thank You, Lord, for the promise of this spiritual principle concerning the blessing of Your rain:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:43-45).

Your rain is a sign of Your mercy. Even when we don’t deserve it -- which we never do by any of our own goodness or righteousness apart from You. Even when we’re unjust and surrounded by the unjust, even when we’re acting in evil and surrounded by those who act in evil, You cause Your rain to fall and Your sun to rise.

The abundant rain and the consistent sun are blessings of God from the goodness of God whose heart is full of mercy and love for us all, whether we deserve it or not. And it’s usually “not.” But here’s the promise of Your Word and the expression of Your heart in one of my favorite Scriptures of all time:

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;

    His mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning;

    great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

And our response:

““The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul,

    ‘therefore I will hope in Him’” (v. 24).

Your mercies are new this morning -- here in my community and here in my heart -- on the just and the unjust, on the good and the evil. And may this blessing of Your abundant mercy and steadfast love turn hearts and souls to You, to put our hope and faith in You alone. “Great is Thy faithfulness. Great is Thy faithfulness. Morning by Morning, new mercies I see.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be blessed by the abundant mercies and steadfast love of God in your life and in your community, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

Fiery Trials Produce Fearless Followers of Christ - October 27, 2022

Morning by Morning, October 27 - Fiery Trials Produce Fearless Followers of Christ

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and every moment of my day. ...

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when His glory is revealed” (1 Peter 4:12-13).

Fiery trials purify our hearts and fashion our character. Fiery trials reveal our hearts and expose our character. And fiery trials make us more like You, as we “share Christ’s sufferings” and reveal Christ’s glory. Fiery trials produce fearless followers of Christ. That’s another dimension of understanding our true identity in Christ and the true Identity of Christ in us -- “Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).

We can’t have a testimony without the tests. We can’t be victorious unless we’ve fought some battles. We can’t be overcomers unless we’ve overcome some challenges. And we can’t be more than conquerors unless we’ve conquered what was set before us on our journey into our personal promised land.

None of that’s in our power. In fact, that’s the point -- to learn that apart from You, we can do nothing -- nothing lasting, nothing of significance, nothing of eternal meaning. That’s how we learn what’s just “wood, hay, and stubble” and what’s “gold, silver, and precious stones” among the moments and the meaning of our lives here in this short sliver of time we have between life and death on this earth with our one opportunity to allow You to make us more like You (1 Corinthians 3:12). “Each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done” (1 Corinthians 3:13).

So I thank You for the Fire. And I thank You that You’re right here with me through fiery trials, just as You promised:

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;

    I have called you by name, you are Mine.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;

    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;

when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,

    and the flame shall not consume you.

For I am the Lord your God,

    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (Isaiah 43:1-3).

Though there are times when it seems like it gets almost too hot to bear, when it seems all-consuming, unrelenting. Yet that’s just what we need, as You burn everything out of us that is not yet like You, “for our God is a consuming Fire” (Hebrews 12:29). And that’s just what You promised, as John said of You:

“I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and Fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will clear his threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn, but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable Fire” (Matthew 3:11-12).

The same Fire that brings the power of God is the same Fire that brings the holiness of God, the character of Christ in us -- here in our hearts and here in our lives, wholly surrendered and committed to You.

So I pray for Your grace to embrace the Fire and endure the fiery trials, as You make me more like You each day (Romans 8:29; 1 John 4:17).

“In this (we) rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, (we) have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of (our) faith -- more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though (we) have not seen Him, (we) love Him. Though (we) do not now see Him, (we) believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of (our) faith, the salvation of (our) souls” (1 Peter 1:6-9). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you be empowered and emboldened by the Holy Spirit to stand up and speak out and take action as the Lord leads in your community and your nation to come against the tide of godlessness in our day, in Jesus' name. God bless you!

“Justice is Turned Back” and “Truth has Stumbled” but God will Answer if We Do Our Part in His Power - October 26, 2022

Morning by Morning, October 26 - “Justice is Turned Back” and “Truth has Stumbled” but God will Answer if We Do Our Part in His Power

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I open up my heart and speak out Your name to begin my day abiding in You as You abide in me (John 15:5). ...

“Justice is turned back,

    and righteousness stands far away;

for truth has stumbled in the public squares,

    and uprightness cannot enter.

Truth is lacking,

    and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey” (Isaiah 59:14-15).

Last night our local School Board met. On the agenda was the issue of whether we would allow pornographic books in our schools. As one advocate said, “This is the kind of pornographic material that would get any ordinary citizen arrested if you were reading it in the public park.” On an earlier vote by the School Board, the decision was made to take these kinds of books out of our schools.

But last night justice was turned back and righteousness stood far away. Truth stumbled. The voices for what is right and good and true were no longer heeded and heard as the voices for what’s called “consciously awakened and culturally aware” in the local paper carried the day -- a day that makes me sick to my stomach to hear this is the kind of decision that was made in our community.

As the prophet Isaiah spoke into the culture that was awakened to sin and calling it good in his day, he was not pleased with the failure of the people of God to stand up and speak out against the swelling tide of rebellion against the word and the heart of God. By the unction of the Holy Spirit, he declared:

“We hope for light, and behold, darkness,

    and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.

We grope for the wall like the blind;

    we grope like those who have no eyes;

We stumble at noon as in the twilight,

    among those in full vigor we are like dead men.

We all growl like bears;

    we moan and moan like doves;

we hope for justice, but there is none;

    for salvation, but it is far from us” (v. 9-11).

He was saying there was too much hoping and groping and not enough praying through and standing up and speaking out to turn back the tide of rebellion and perversion of the godlessness that was washing over the land.

But they were not alone. And we are not alone. There is One who is greater, One who ready and willing to hear and to answer our call if we will be available and ready to take our stand and allow His voice to be heard through us and His power to move through us. We must pray, but we must also act. We must pray, but we must also vote. We must pray, but we must also make phone calls, send emails, write letters to editor, show up for school board meetings, town hall discussions, and legislative committee meetings.

Not in our power, but Yours. Not in our wisdom or determination or will power, but Yours. I’m convicted to do more. I’m awakened to say more. And I’m ready to join my fellow citizens who are followers of Jesus Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit, listening for the heart of our Father who will take a stand in our community in our day.

Isaiah expressed Your heart and Your response in His day and we pray the same in our day:

“The Lord saw it, and it displeased Him

    that there was no justice.

He saw that there was no man,

    and wondered that there was no one to intercede;

then His own arm brought Him salvation,

    and His righteousness upheld Him.

He put on righteousness as a breastplate,

    and a helmet of salvation on His head;

He put on garments of vengeance for clothing,

    and wrapped Himself in zeal as a cloak.

According to their deeds, so will He repay,

    wrath to His adversaries, repayment to His enemies;

    to the coastlands He will render repayment.

So they shall fear the name of the Lord from the west,

    and His glory from the rising of the sun;

for He will come like a rushing stream,

    which the wind of the Lord drives.

“‘And a Redeemer will come to Zion,

    to those in Jacob who turn from transgression,’ declares the Lord.

“And as for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the Lord: ‘My Spirit that is upon you, and My words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children's offspring,’ says the Lord, ‘from this time forth and forevermore’” (v. 15-21).

Yes, Lord. Put Your Spirit in our hearts, Your words in our mouths, and Your action to our feet as we get up off of our couches and get into this fight for the hearts and minds of our children and their children and their children. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Bloom Where You’re Planted to Flourish and Thrive - October 25, 2022

Morning by Morning, October 25 - Bloom Where You’re Planted to Flourish and Thrive

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead me by Your Spirit into all You have for me today -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...

As we begin to settle into our home for this next season near the heart of our community -- a little cabin with a lot of character -- I hear this in my heart this morning:

“Bloom where you’re planted. Pray from where I’ve strategically positioned you. Flourish and thrive with the life of My Spirit in you.” ...

Yes, Lord. Your Word comes to my heart from the Prophecy of Jeremiah:

“Pursue the well-being of the city I have deported you to. Pray to the Lord on its behalf, for when it thrives, you will thrive” (Jeremiah 29:7 CSB).

You sent the Jewish people to Babylon for a season; You’ve sent us to Fredericksburg. Though we were called to this city and not deported to it, the principle is the same -- pray for the city, bless the city, become a part of the city with God’s heart for all that city is to become, despite whatever conditions or challenges it currently endures. The same principle applies to a nation or a family or a neighborhood or church or a business or a school or wherever we find ourselves planted or positioned for that season. It’s for a reason. And it’s to make a difference.

We make a difference not by striving in our strength but by carrying Your Presence. Wherever we go, You are there (Matthew 28:20). Wherever we live, You are at home (1 Corinthians 6:19). The Light of Your Glory arises and shines in us and through us (Isaiah 60:1-3; Matthew 5:14).

The atmosphere is changed, the spiritual realm is shifted because we carry Your Presence and manifest Your Kingdom, as Your Presence and Your Kingdom come with us wherever You send us and plant us and position us (Luke 17:21; Colossians 1:27). “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in (us). And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, He will give life to (our) mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within (us)” (Romans 8:11 NLT).

By the power of Your grace, may we bloom where we’re planted, thriving with the Life of Christ in the Spirit of God -- here in this place You’ve positioned us, here in this city and this nation, here in our hearts and in all that touches us and all that You touch through us.

In the expressive words of The Message Version of the Bible, You said it this way:

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand -- shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16 MSG).

Lord, let it be so -- in us and in Your people everywhere You’ve positioned us to bloom and to thrive and to make a difference -- as best as we can and all by Your grace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you bloom where you're planted to flourish and thrive with the light of the glory of God arising and shining through you to make a difference in your world by the grace of God, in Jesus' name. God bless you!
