Morning by Morning, October 6 - One Day of Atonement, Every Day of “At-One-Ment” Good morning, Lord Jesus. King of kings and Lord of lords, be King of my heart and Lord of my life -- this day and every day. ... From sundown to sundown, yesterday was the Day of Atonement on the Biblical calendar among the appointed times of the Lord set apart in Scripture: “‘This shall be a statute to you forever: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble yourselves and shall do no work, neither the native-born nor the alien who resides among you. For on this day atonement shall be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins you shall be clean before the Lord. It is a Sabbath of complete rest to you, and you shall humble yourselves; it is a statute forever. The priest who is anointed and consecrated as priest in his father’s place shall make atonement, wearing the linen vestments, the holy vestments. He shall make atonement for the sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the Israelites once in the year for all their sins.’ And Moses did as the Lord had commanded him” (Leviticus 16:29-34). All the appointed times and holy days, all the feasts and festivals, all the Law and the Prophets point to You and are fulfilled in You (Matthew 5:17). You are the pure and perfect, atoning Sacrifice that cleanses us from our sin. You are our Sabbath of complete rest -- resting from any labors or works of our own to try to earn our own salvation, as we rest in the finished work of the Cross. “For it was fitting that we should have such a High Priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, He has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for His own sins and then for those of the people; this He did once for all when He offered Himself. For the Law appoints as high priests humans, who are subject to weakness, but the Word of the Oath, which came later than the Law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever” (Hebrews 7:26-28). Through You, we are forgiven and welcome into the Holy of Holies of Your Presence. No veil, no sin between us, by the Sacrifice of the Blood of the Lamb of God who has taken away the sin of the world (John 1:29; Revelation 5:9). The Day of Atonement was forever fulfilled on the Day of the Cross. One Day of Atonement that we can live every day “at-one-ment.” At one with You, as we abide in You and You abide in us (John 15:4). As You said it would be, by Your Holy Spirit, by Your holy Presence abiding in us, “I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you” (John 14:20). “Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). Through Your atonement, we can live “at-one-ment,” we can live in fellowship, in spiritual intimacy, unseparated from the Presence and the goodness of God. This is the fulfillment of Your High Priestly Prayer for all who would believe in You and draw near to You and embrace the grace of all You’ve done for us: “I ask not only on behalf of these but also on behalf of those who believe in Me through their word, that they may all be one. As You, Father, are in Me and I am in You, may they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. The glory that You have given Me I have given them, so that they may be one, as We are One, I in them and You in Me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that You have sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me” (John 17:20-23). As I look back in remembrance, I thank You for the Day of Atonement, fulfilled in You. And as I look forward in faith, I thank You for every day of my new life in Christ, in my life of “at-one-ment” with You forever. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
