Morning by Morning, January 10 - “Life. Liberty. And the Pursuit of Happiness.” Good morning, Lord Jesus. King of Kings and Lord of Lords, come rule and reign as King of my heart and Lord of my life today. ... As I wait for the leading of Your Holy Spirit, these words come to my heart this morning: “Life. Liberty. And the pursuit of happiness.” ... My first thought, of course, is that these words are from the Declaration of Independence instead of the Bible. And I wonder if these are just words from my own thoughts and not Your words forming in my thoughts through the communion of prayer. But I wasn’t thinking any thoughts at all about these things when I settled in to pray this morning, and tend to think they are from You. Looking up these words in this historic document, I find their Source is from You after all: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The same Creator who wrote the Bible is the same Creator who endowed every person with these “unalienable Rights” -- “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” We’re created for life. You said, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). “I AM the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). “The Spirit gives life” (John 6:63). Likewise, true Liberty only truly comes from You. “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). “For the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV), “there is freedom” (ESV). And You’re the One who’s put the passion and desire for the pursuit of happiness in our hearts. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’” (Isaiah 52:7) “Happy are the people whose God is the Lord!” (Psalm 144:15) So today, as I harken to Your voice in my heart, as I discern the leading of Your Spirit in my spirit, I declare my independence from the ways of this world and embrace the ways of God. And I declare my dependence upon You. “Depend upon the Lord; trust Him, and He will take care of you” (Psalm 37:5 NCV). You’ve given me and every person these rights and these desires. So by the power of the grace of God I receive them today, thank You for them today, and take time to appreciate You for them today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
