Morning by Morning, January 16 - Nothing Good Apart from Jesus

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and listen for Your voice to begin my day centered in You. ...

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5).

Apart from You, I can do nothing.

Well, in the true context of Your Words, I can do something apart from You, alright. But it sure won’t be something good. It won’t be something of any significance and certainly won’t be anything of any eternal value. It’ll be just like the worthless branches of a vine that never bear any fruit, to be “gathered, thrown into the fire and burned” (v.6). It’ll be just the “wood, hay, and stubble” of my own efforts apart from Your Presence that will be burned up in the fire at the judgment of all things (1 Corinthians 3:12-13).

So I don’t want to do anything apart from You. I don’t want to be wasting my time in this little sliver of time I have on this side of eternity where my place in eternity is determined (1 Corinthians 3:14; Matthew 10:42; Luke 6:35; Luke 23:41).

And I don’t want to spend a moment of any day apart from You. You never leave me nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5). You’re with me always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).

So I want to answer Your call and embrace Your invitation to come abide in You. I in in You and You in me. You bearing Your fruit though me. “The riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in (me), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). “For (I) have died, and (my) life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is (my) life appears, they (I) will also appear with Him in glory” -- all by the mercy of this mystery of the grace of God (Colossians 3:3-4). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
