Morning by Morning, June 18 - Fear Not Through the Fires Good morning, Lord Jesus. I draw near to You and thank You that You draw near to me--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God--just was Your Word welcomes me, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). ... Two fast-moving fires have erupted in the mountains where my mom, stepfather, brother, and dear friends live in the New Mexico village of Ruidoso. With the rest of the town, they have evacuated down through the valley as the only open road of escape to Roswell, New Mexico to wait and to pray. As I turn my heart to You to pray Your Word and Your will back to You, this Scripture immediately comes to mind: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (Isaiah 43:2-3). Your Word goes on to declare: “Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.... Fear not, for I am with you” (v. 4-5). Your Word says: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine” (Isaiah v.1). As fires rage and storms invade, as we face destruction in many forms during this sliver of time we all have on our journey through this broken and fallen world under siege, help us keep our eyes on You. Help us keep our faith in You. Our faith is not that we will never have to be challenged with bad things--difficult, destructive or even wicked, evil things where death entered the world through sin in the very first generation that continues to besiege us and affect us all through every generation (Romans 5:12). Our faith is in You and that You are with us through it all (Matthew 28:20). That You never leave us nor forsake us through it all (Hebrews 13:5). And that You will cause it all--no matter the immediate source of it all--to work together for good (Romans 8:28) and to work together for us, as You make us more like You through all we endure and overcome by the power and mercy of Your grace (Romans 8:29). At the same time, we pray against this fire. Lord, send Your rains! Lord, stop the winds! Lord empower with Your wisdom and strength Your sons and daughters who are on the front lines of defense to stop these fires and save these towns under this siege! Lord Jesus, You came that we would “have life and have it abundantly,” while it is the thief who “comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10). Lord, stop this thief in its tracks, along with every means it is using to try to steal and kill and destroy--whether physical or spiritual. We join in praying Psalm 91 over every person and all that is involved, as You draw them into “the shelter of the Most High” to “abide in the shadow of the Almighty” as their “Refuge” and “Fortress” in whom we trust (Psalm 91:1-2). Let there be deliverance from this “destruction” (v. 6). And may many souls turn to You for salvation, for protection, and for redemption of whatever they suffer, endure and overcome through this siege, without fear, for You are the Lord our God, our Savior, who loves us and who is always for us. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
