Morning by Morning, October 16, 2026 — “Is There Not A Cause?”
Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill me with Your Spirit and lead me in Your ways (Romans 8:9). …
As I wait for Your leading, the words of young David come to mind as he sought to rally the men of Israel in the face of Goliath’s threats:
“Is there not a cause?” (1 Samuel 17:29)
I’m thinking of mid-term elections coming up soon. Polls and sentiment seem to be leaning against the perspectives I hold, which I see as positions in favor of biblical values and principles honoring faith, family, and freedom. A guiding principle for how I make my decisions and cast my votes is “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).
But to those who are complacent about participating in elections or speaking up for issues of righteousness, I say, “Is there not a cause?”
I’m thinking of the everyday battles we face in our everyday world. Sometimes we feel like we’re facing our own giants: fear, discouragement, sickness, financial challenges, struggles within and without, and all around. And we feel outnumbered and overmatched, like we’re just a little boy with a slingshot coming against a giant with a sword.
But to those who feel weary or alone, ready to give up hope, I remind you of this truth, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). And I say, “Is there not a cause?”
Young David answered the call. He was stirred up to action in faith by the cause. In the boldness that faith imparts, in the courage that only You can provide, David declared his dependence on You, his confidence in You, and the righteousness of his cause. He refused to sit back passively for somebody else to fight the battle or to shrink back from the action that the present challenge required. He rose to the occasion to see Your victory through his actions of obedience and faith in You:
“Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you!’” (1 Samuel 17:45-46).
And so he did (v. 48-51).
When David rose to the occasion and took up the cause, the others rallied to action (v. 52). And there was great victory! (v. 53)
“Is there not a cause” in our times, in our nation, in our families and our world? Is there not One who is in us who is greater than the one who is in the world? Is this not the time to be active instead of passive, to be bold and courageous instead of cowardly and silent?
Yes, “the battle is the Lord’s” and at the same time, You put the battle “into our hands” (v. 47). May we be found faithful in our times to rise to the occasion and answer the call and take up the cause. As best as we can and all by the power of Your grace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
