Fire and Glory - God’s “Spiritual Refining Process” - November 2, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, November 2 - Fire and Glory - God’s “Spiritual Refining Process” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Align my heart with Your Heart, my thoughts with Your Thoughts, and my ways with Your Ways -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “Friends, when life gets really difficult, don’t jump to the conclusion that God isn’t on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, with glory just around the corner. If you’re abused because of Christ, count yourself fortunate. It’s the Spirit of God and His glory in you that brought you to the notice of others. If they’re on you because you broke the law or disturbed the peace, that’s a different matter. But if it’s because you’re a Christian, don’t give it a second thought. Be proud of the distinguished status reflected in that name!” (1 Peter 4:12-16 The Message) Lord, help me see everything I go through on my journey through this world as Your “spiritual refining process.” These “fiery trials” are just opportunities for me grow in the character of Christ (v. 12 NKJV). They’re producing in me a “faith, being much more precious than gold” (1 Peter 1:7). So give me grace to stand up and speak up, for the sake of Christ and in the character of Christ -- even when it costs me something. In fact, especially when it costs me something. That’s the spiritual principle of fire and glory. As we go through the fire, You’re displaying Your glory through us. You’re developing the glory of Your Presence in us. “Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). Just like when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were cast into Nebuchadnezzar’s fiery furnace because they were standing up and speaking up for the Lord our God rather than bowing down to the religion of the culture of their day, it cost them something. They were willing to lay down their lives for Your sake and face the fire (Daniel 3:16-23). But You were with them in the fire! Even Nebuchadnezzar himself could see the glory of God upon them in fire and the Son of God with them in the fire! “‘Look!’ he answered, ‘I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God!” (Daniel 3:25). Their fiery trial revealed Your glory with them. Their fiery trial produced Your glory within them -- for the world and the rulers of this world to see. Even the world’s fiery trials become the instrument of Your grace to make us more like You if we keep trusting You through the fire. Fire and glory. Our fires and Your glory. Christ in us, the hope of glory. Lord, give me courage and grace for every trial I’ll face. For there will always be One with me in the fire of Your “spiritual refining process” of my journey through the fires and trials of this world. And You’ll use it all to keep making me more like You each day (Romans 8:29; 1 John 4:17). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! The Word of God is Honey to My Soul - November 1, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, November 1 - The Word of God is Honey to My Soul Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and every moment of my day. ... “The voice said to me, ‘Son of man, eat what I am giving you -- eat this scroll! Then go and give its message to the people of Israel.’ So I opened my mouth, and He fed me the scroll. ‘Fill your stomach with this,’ He said. And when I ate it, it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth” (Ezekiel 3:1-3). Lord, give me a deep hunger for Your Word and a tender sensitivity for Your voice. Give me a razor-sharp discernment for what I believe I hear You saying that comes out of a solid rock foundation of what I’ve read in Your Word. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). So let Your Word guide my steps. Let Your Word inform my thoughts. Let Your Word be the plumbline for my standards and the foundation for my beliefs. Let Your Word be the filter for all I receive, all I perceive, and all I release. By the power of Your grace, let this be the attitude of my heart: “Your Word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. Blessed are You, O Lord! Teach me Your statutes. With my lips I have declared All the judgments of Your mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches. I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways. I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your Word” (Psalm 119:1-16). “How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103). With Your Word hidden my heart, like honey to my soul, fill my thoughts with Your ways, guide my steps with Your light, so that the words I speak are grounded in Your Word and filled with Your heart. Led by the Pillar of Cloud and Fire of the Holy Spirit - October 27, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, October 27 - Led by the Pillar of Cloud and Fire of the Holy Spirit Good morning, Lord Jesus. Here I am, Lord. Steady me in Your Word and fill me with Your Spirit, as I walk out the steps of my day with You. ... “The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people” (Exodus 13:21-22). That pillar of cloud and pillar of fire, that led Your people under the Old Covenant speak of the Holy Spirit of the Living God who now leads Your people under the New Covenant in Christ. “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” (Romans 8:14). The Cloud of Your Glory fills my heart, as Your Holy Spirit fills my body as Your temple. “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19). And the Fire of Your Presence consumes my heart with a burning Fire to follow You, as I seek to become more like You. “For indeed our God is a Consuming Fire” (Hebrews 12:29). When I sense the Cloud and the Fire of Your Spirit leading me out into my day, give me Your holy sensitivity to know it’s time to go. Lead my heart and guide my steps. And when I sense the Cloud and Fire of Your Spirit holding steady, give me Your holy patience to wait on You and trust in Your timing. For from the day I welcomed Your Spirit into my heart -- “the Spirit of Christ” within me (Romans 8:9) -- my body was no longer my own and my life is no longer my own, for “(I) belong to Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:23). “It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). So come, Holy Spirit -- Pillar of Cloud and Pillar of Fire, Spirit of the Living God and “Spirit of Christ” in me. Spirit, lead on. “Make me know Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; For You I wait all the day” (Psalm 25:4-5). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Praying and Responding to the Lord of the Harvest - Here I Am, Lord - October 26, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, October 26 - Praying and Responding to the Lord of the Harvest - Here I Am, Lord Good morning, Lord Jesus. I look to You and listen for Your leading. ... “Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest’” (Matthew 9:35-38). Lord Jesus, what You spoke to Your first disciples, I believe You are still speaking to Your disciples today. I believe the “harvest” You spoke of has not come and gone. It hasn’t just withered on the vine or been plowed over and left as fallow ground. No, I believe every seed You’ve sown in Your harvest field is coming to maturity. Just as every seed the enemy of our souls has sown into that same field is coming to maturity. In Your parable of the wheat and the weeds, both coming to maturity as they grow up from seeds to the time of harvest in the same field, You said, “the harvest is the end of the age” (Matthew 13:24-43). And as we near “the end of the age,” the harvest will come. You said “the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one” (v. 37). We certainly see both in our world today -- both growing up into full maturity, whether good or evil. And the times are ripe for harvest. So in obedience to Your Word, I pray the prayer You taught Your disciples to pray: Lord of the harvest, send out laborers into Your harvest.  And as I pray for others to be sent, what stirs in my heart is, “Here I am, Lord. Send me.” ... And an old song from much earlier in my life, from the early days of my deeper journey with You, comes rising up in my spirit right now: I the Lord of sea and sky I have heard My people cry All who dwell in dark and sin My hand will save I who made the stars of night I will make their darkness bright Who will bear My light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night I will go Lord, If You lead me, I will hold Your people in my heart I, the Lord of snow and rain I have borne My people's pain I have wept for love of them They turn away I will break their hearts of stone Give them hearts for love alone I will speak My words to them Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord? I have heard You calling in the night I will go Lord, If You lead me I will hold Your people in my heart I, the Lord of wind and flame I will tend the poor and lame I will set a feast for them My hand will save Finest bread I will provide 'Til their hearts be satisfied I will give My life to them Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night I will go, Lord, if You lead me I will hold Your people in my heart (written by Dan Schutte) Yes, Lord. Here I am, Lord. Send me into Your harvest today. I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart. And I pray You will send Your other laborers of Your love into Your harvest too. Each Part, Fully Expressed - October 25, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, October 25 - Each Part, Fully Expressed Good morning, Lord Jesus. Your Word is a Lamp to my feet and Light to my path. Guide my steps today, I pray, as I seek to start my day grounded in Your Word and filled with Your Spirit. ... I’ve been in many different gatherings recently where there was a powerful flow of Your Spirit from one person to another, with each offering their part as You wove together all the parts into a whole. It reminds me of one of the places in Your Word where every dimension of Your Holy Trinity is expressed in drawing us near to You in worship and prayer: “Be filled with Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:18-20). And it reminds me of Your heart to unite us together, with each sharing our part so that You can fit together all the parts in worship and prayer, when each part is fully expressed: “What should be done then, my friends? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn; and let one interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let them be silent in church and speak to themselves and to God. Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. If a revelation is made to someone else sitting nearby, let the first person be silent. For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged. And the spirits of prophets are subject to the prophets, for God is a God not of disorder but of peace” (1 Corinthians 14:26-33). “One by one” we can each share our part “so that all may learn and all be encouraged” (v. 31). When we do, by the leading of Your Holy Spirit and with guidance of Your Father heart, all is done in “peace” as we experience Your Presence and Your power in our midst (v. 32). There’s room to “weigh what is said” with wisdom and discernment, to weed out the flesh and embrace the Spirit (v. 29). And there’s a right way with a right spirit that “all things (are) done for building up” the body of believers, when we come together in freedom and love, with no agenda but Yours (v. 26). In humility and in honest expression of our need for one another in the bonds of love together in worship and prayer, passionately pursuing our need of You, Your Word reminds us that “we know only in part and we prophesy only in part” so that we need all the parts to be fully expressed (1 Corinthians 13:9). By the power of Your grace, set us free from reluctance and fear, feelings of insecurity or inadequacy, or anything else that would hold us back from sharing the hope that is within us all for the good of us all (1 Peter 3:15). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
