Consuming “The Bread of Life” in Deeper Intimacy with Jesus - December 3, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, December 3 - Consuming “The Bread of Life” in Deeper Intimacy with Jesus Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the center of my heart and every moment of my day. ... “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35). The day before You spoke these words, You had fed the five thousand out of the five loaves of bread and two fish, with twelve baskets full of bread left over (v. 8-13). And “when the people saw the sign that (You) had done, they began to say, ‘This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world” -- the long-awaited Messiah (v. 14). Then they pursued You to other side of the sea of Galilee. Yet even after that, many were focused on the blessings of Your power rather than the glory of Your Presence. You confronted their motives and their hearts, challenging them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on Him that God the Father has set His seal” (v. 26-27). You awakened them with the revelation that even in the wilderness with Moses, when the manna from God came down to feed their ancestors in the desert, You were the Manna that sustained them, declaring, “I am the Living Bread that came down from heaven” (v. 51). And then You shocked them with the most challenging words of all: “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood you have no life in you. Those who eat My flesh and drink My blook have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for My flesh is true food and My blood is true drink. Those who eat My flesh and drink My blood abide in Me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats Me will live because of Me. This is Bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died, but the one who eats this Bread will live forever” (v. 53-58). It was more than many could bear. Even “many of (Your) disciples turned back and no longer went about with (You)” (v. 66). So it is today. This depth of intimacy with You is more than many can bear  -- even among those who follow You and would say they are Your disciples. But You’re calling is not merely to follow You, but to “abide in (You)” (v. 56). You’re invitation is not merely to call upon You but to spiritually consume You -- for You are the Bread of Life. “(Your) words are Spirit and Life” (v. 63). And You are “the Word (that) was made Flesh” to dwell among us in Your glory, “the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Today, You call us as Your true disciples, to embrace Your words, to consume Your Presence, as we abide in You and You abide in us, in the depths of spiritual intimacy that few are truly willing to pursue (John 15:4). We are to become “one” with You and “one” with our Father, just as You and our Father are “one” (John 17:21). As You prayed as the Son of Man on earth before ascending to the Father after Your resurrection from Your death upon the cross for every one of us: “The glory that You have given Me I have given them, so that they may be one, as We are one, I in them and You in Me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that You have sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me” (John 17:22-23). These are the ones who will truly represent You in our world -- the surrendered ones, the intimate ones, the ones who embrace Your words and Your Presence, consuming You as the Bread of Life to become one with You. It’s more than most can bear. So Lord, give me the grace to be one of those  -- one of Yours, one of Your intimate ones who have become “one” with You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Speaking Up for “The Least of These” - December 1, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, December 1 - Speaking Up for “The Least of These” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Guide my heart and direct my thoughts in the ways of truth and love -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “Then He will say to those at His left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from Me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome Me, naked and you did not give Me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (Matthew 25:41-46). Surely among “the least of these” in our world are the most vulnerable children, created by God, being knit together, fearfully and wonderfully made, and waiting expectantly for birth from the security and safety of their mother’s womb. And surely You expect us to stand up and speak out for the lives of these unborn children, created in the image of God, against all that would harm them.  There will come a day “when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and He will put the sheep at His right hand and the goats at the left” (v. 31-33). On that day of judgment, nations will be judged for how they treated “the least of these” (v. 40 and v. 45). On that day, let our nation be found faithful and judged among the righteous -- a nation who stood up and spoke out for life, for the most vulnerable among us, for “the least of these.” Now, while we can, may we have the courage and conviction to defend life and not destroy it, to honor life and not despise it. “For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. For it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me,     and every tongue shall give praise to God.’ So then, each of us will be accountable to God” (Romans 14:10-12).  Come, Holy Spirit. Awaken us to Your Word of Spirit and Life and Truth from Psalm 139: “For it was You who formed my inward parts;     You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.     Wonderful are Your works; that I know very well.      My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret,     intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In Your book were written     all the days that were formed for me,     when none of them as yet existed” (Psalm 139:13-16). You “set before (us) life and death, blessings and curses;” and You beseech us “Choose life so that (our) descendants may live!” (Deuteronomy 30:19) Give us grace, give us wisdom, give us compassion, give us obedience and faithfulness and courage to choose life. To speak up for life. To defend life. To honor the priceless value and eternal worth of “the least of these.” As one nation under God. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing - November 30, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, November 30 - Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing Good morning, Lord Jesus. Make me more like You today. ... “The seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, in Your name even the demons submit to us!’ He said to them, ‘I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven’” (Luke 10:17-20). The disciples were excited and filled with joy when they saw the power of God being released through their ministry in the authority of the name of Jesus. And You were excited and filled with joy to see the kingdom of Satan being destroyed, as the kingdom of God was coming on earth as it is in heaven: “At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, ‘I thankYou, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was Your gracious will” (v. 21). Yet in all the excitement and joy, You were reminding Your disciples then -- just as You’re still reminding Your disciples today -- to keep “first things first” and that “the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” And the first thing, the main thing, was their personal relationship with You, so that their names were written in heaven. I’m so humbled and excited to see You move in the power of Your love and the authority of Your name through this simple little ministry You’ve entrusted to us at Messiah Ministries. You’ve called us to “prepare the way of the Lord” in peoples’ hearts and in the earth. You’ve called us to “minister the healing love of God” -- especially through the prayer ministry of inner healing and deliverance, what I’ve come to call “healing from the inside out.” And Yet, I’m most humbled and excited to know I’m a child of God, a disciple of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, and that my name is written in heaven. Wow! Thank You, Jesus! So I do believe You’re still rejoicing in the Holy Spirit at the right hand of the Father, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come” (Ephesians 1:20). And I do believe that by the mercy of God and the mystery of faith, that I’m also raised up there with You in the Spirit, with heaven in my heart and my name written in heaven, as Your Word proclaims:  “But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which He loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ -- by grace you have been saved -- and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:4-7). That’s a little hard to fully comprehend, but it’s not very hard to rejoice in what You’ve done for me! Give me grace and faith to keep living into this joyful truth more every day! That’s the main thing! Thank You, Jesus! Thank You, Father! Thank You, Holy Spirit! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! The Miracle of Hanukkah Fulfilled in the Messiah - November 29, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, November 29 - The Miracle of Hanukkah Fulfilled in the Messiah Good morning, Lord Jesus. Light of the World, let Your Light shine into every area of my heart and through every moment of my day. ... “In Him was Life, and that Life was the Light of all mankind. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:4-5). Throughout the world, the Jewish people are celebrating Hanukkah -- the Festival of Lights -- for when they recaptured Jerusalem and rededicated the temple in 164 BC. A wicked Greek ruler, Antiochus Epiphanes -- self-named “Epiphanes” because he demanded to be worshipped as a god -- had mercilessly persecuted the Jewish people and defiled their temple until the spiritual resistance movement of the Maccabees. It was a miracle defeat of a world ruler by a small band of those who united in their faith of God to overcome the spiritual and political oppression of their times. They restored the golden menorah to the temple, where the oil of the lamp was to burn continually with sanctified oil (Exodus 27:20). But there was only enough sanctified oil to last for one day when they took over the temple from the Greeks. Then by a miracle of God, the oil lasted and burned brightly for eight days until new oil could be gathered and sanctified to burn again in the temple as commanded by Scripture. These are the eight days celebrated as Hannukah -- also called The Festival of Lights or the Feast of Dedication or the Feast of the Maccabees. When You walked this earth on the streets of Jerusalem in human form, You also celebrated this feast: “At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem; it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple area, in the portico of Solomon. The Jews then surrounded Him and began saying to Him, ‘How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly’ (John 10:22-24). You were, in fact, the Christ, the Messiah of Israel, whom they were seeking to deliver them from their political oppression. But You had come to set them free from their spiritual oppression and open their eyes to see that You were the Light of the World. You replied to their question with the declaration of Your Deity: “I and My Father are One” (John 10:30).  You were the prophetic fulfillment of the very feast they were celebrating: “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the Light of Life’” (John 8:12). Light of the Word, give us courage to stand firm in our faith in whatever oppression our generation may face in our days. Give us courage to overcome whatever would seek to defile Your temple in our lives -- for now in Christ, our bodies are Your temple (1 Corinthians 6:19) and Your Holy Spirit is the Light that shines through us into the darkness of our world (Matthew 5:14). And the darkness cannot overcome It (John 1:5). “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). Shine, Jesus, shine! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Spiritual Strategy of Thanksgiving and Praise - November 25, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, November 25 - Spiritual Strategy of Thanksgiving and Praise Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I begin my day with You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- I enter Your gates with thanksgiving and Your courts with praise! ... Thanksgiving to God was the key to the battle the days of King Jehoshaphat: “A great multitude” was against him and his people. “Jehoshaphat was afraid; (so) he set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. Judah assembled to seek help from the Lord; from all the towns of Judah they came to seek the Lord” (2 Chronicles 20:2-4). And as the king and all the people of the land came to seek You and cry out to You, in their fear and distress for Your answer to their great need in the face of this great multitude of their enemies, You spoke to them a word of encouragement through one of Your prophets and gave them the spiritual strategy of thanksgiving and praise: “Meanwhile all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the middle of the assembly. He said, ‘Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not fear or be dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but God’s. Tomorrow go down against them; they will come up by the ascent of Ziz; you will find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel. This battle is not for you to fight; take your position, stand still, and see the victory of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.’ Then Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. And the Levites, of the Kohathites and the Korahites, stood up to praise the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice. They rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, ‘Listen to me, O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God and you will be established; believe His prophets.’ When he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise Him in holy splendor, as they went before the army, saying, ‘Give thanks to the Lord,     for His steadfast love endures forever.’ As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set an ambush against the Ammonites, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. For the Ammonites and Moab attacked the inhabitants of Mount Seir, destroying them utterly; and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they all helped to destroy one another. When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; they were corpses lying on the ground; no one had escaped” (2 Chronicles 20:13-24). The song in hearts of the people that shifted the spiritual atmosphere from fear to victory was a song of thanksgiving -- thanksgiving for the steadfast love of the Lord. Not a song of their might or power, but a song of thanksgiving for the might and power of Your love! It was the power of Your love that cast out their fear and it was the power of Your love that overcome their enemies, as they worshipped You with thanksgiving and praise. Lord, we know there are different strategies for every battle. But let the Spirit of the Lord fall upon us and rise up within us to seek You and worship You with thanksgiving in our hearts for Your love that endures forever. As we sing praise, You move in power, You move in battle on our behalf, You shift the spiritual atmosphere and bring victory out of the grip of defeat to display Your glory in the face of our spiritual enemies.
