The Holy Communion of Oneness with Christ - January 6, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, January 6 - The Holy Communion of Oneness with Christ Good morning, Lord Jesus. You’re One with the Father, One with the Holy Spirit, and in the mystery of faith and mercy of God, You desire to be One with me and with all who join themselves to You. “The one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him” (1 Corinthians 6:17 NASB). ... As You prayed for each of us at the end of Your earthly days, in Your High Priestly Prayer: “I am not asking on behalf of these alone, but also for those who believe in Me through their word, that they may all be one; just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:20-21). Our unity in the communion of oneness with You -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- is more than our spiritual intimacy with You, it’s also part of our witness to the world. Just as You continued in Your Prayer: “The glory which You have given Me I also have given to them, so that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and You loved them, just as You loved Me” (John 17:22-23). You want us with You, wherever You are; and You want us to be as one with You, wherever we are. As You continued to pray: “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24). This unity in the holy communion of oneness with You, Lord Jesus, is a deep yearning of Your heart and powerful witness of Your love. As You expressed with passion in the final words of Your High Priestly Prayer: “Righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:25-26). It’s only by Your grace, only through faith, and in a way that we can hardly grasp with our human minds and limited understanding that we “may become partakers of the divine nature” in our communion with You (2 Peter 1:4). Seeking You, surrendering to You, embracing You by the grace in which You are embracing us -- spirit to Spirit, heart to Heart, deep to Deep -- we are joined together with You, united as one with You. That’s all part of what it means to be “the body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:27), to be “the bride” of Christ (Revelation 21:9), to have “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16), to be filled with “the Spirit of Christ” (Romans 8:9). “Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). “If we have become one with Christ in His death, we will be one with Him in being raised from the dead to new life” (Romans 6:5 NLV). Thank You for the gift of this holy and intimate communion with You, this unity with You, this spiritual journey of becoming one with You -- day by day, moment by moment, morning by morning. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with (us) all” (2 Corinthians 13:14). Morning by Morning, January 5 - “Astonished” by “The Boy Jesus” Who is “About My Father’s Business”   Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I draw near to You, You draw near to me -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God (James 4:8). ...   “(Jesus’) parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day's journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, ‘Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.’ And He said to them, ‘Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?’ But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them” (Luke 2:41-50).   We often think of Jesus as the Baby in the manger at Christmas time or the Lord Jesus waking, talking, and teaching His disciples while ministering to the people or our Savior Jesus upon the Cross as the Sacrifice for our sins or even the King of Kings and Lord of Lords Jesus coming in glory on His white horse to judge the nations at the end of days. But there is also “the Boy Jesus.”   It's as “the Boy Jesus” that You “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” (v. 52). And it’s even as “the Boy Jesus” that You were already “about (Your) Father’s business” (v. 49). You were “in the temple” while You were “listening” to the teachers and “asking them questions” (v. 46). But even then, even as “the Boy Jesus,” everyone who heard You was “astonished” at Your wisdom and understanding.   On my own journey from conception to adulthood, from my new birth in Christ to my maturity in Christ, let me be found “in the temple” -- in the place where Your Presence dwells. Let me be listening and learning to the Word of God and growing in relationship with the One who is the Word of God (John 1:1, 14). And let me never cease to be “astonished” at Your wisdom, as I marvel in Your Presence that You are the God who is with me, who draws near to me, as I draw near to You (Matthew 1:23; James 4:6). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Growing in Wisdom and Stature and Favor with God and with Man - January 4, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, January 4 - Growing in Wisdom and Stature and Favor with God and with Man   Good morning, Lord Jesus. I begin my day seeking Your face and listening for Your voice in the communion of prayer -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...   “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52 RSV).   You are both Son of God and Son of Man, truly God and truly man. And in that dimension of Your humanity, You “humbled (Yourself)” to be “born in the likeness of men,” and You grew from a child to a man. During those thirty-three years You walked this earth in humanity, You “emptied (Yourself)” from “the form of God” and set aside “equality with God ... being found in human form” (Philippians 2:5-8). As a man, You lived Your life on this earth in perfect faithfulness to God the Father -- only doing what You saw Him doing, only speaking what You heard Him speaking -- in perfect surrender and obedience, as You “became obedient unto death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:8).   Sometimes we can overemphasis Your Deity and underemphasize Your humanity. But the truth is, in that human dimension of Your Being, You “became obedient” and You “increased in wisdom.” In other words You grew in spiritual maturity from the moment You were conceived by the Holy Spirit in Mary’s womb to the moment gave up Your Spirit and breathed Your last breath from the Cross to declare, “It is finished” (John 19:30). “Although (You were) a Son, (You) learned obedience through what (You) suffered” throughout Your spiritual journey through this broken and fallen world (Hebrews 5:8).   In this way, You are not only our Savior, but You’re also our Example. You show us how to grow up in spiritual maturity, how to in increase in Godly wisdom, how to become obedient in committed faithfulness through all that we suffer and endure and overcome by the power of Your grace on our own spiritual journey through this same broken and fallen world. You empower us by Your Spirit to “Let the same mind be in (us) that was in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).   By the power of Your grace at work within us by Your Holy Spirit, we keep growing and increasing, in favor with God and with man, “until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.... no longer children.... But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ” (Ephesians 4:13-15).   So I look to You as my Lord and as my Example. As I seek You and behold You, as I worship You and become one with You, You are making me more like You each day (2 Corinthians 3:18; John 17:22-23). You are causing me to grow up and increase, just like You, as I “follow in (Your) steps” (1 Peter 2:21) and mature into Your likeness (1 John 4:17). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Hungry for the Presence of God Like Anna - January 3, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, January 3 - Hungry for the Presence of God Like Anna   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Listening for Your leading, I’m watching and waiting for You to bring Your thoughts to my mind and Your words to my heart. ...   “And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of Him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem” (Luke 2:36-38).   Along with the prophet Simeon, the prophetess Anna was there that day Mary and Joseph dedicated You to God at the temple, as they “performed everything according to the Law of the Lord” (v. 39). It was no accident Anna and Simeon were there. Simeon had longed to see You before he died (v. 26) and Anna wouldn’t leave the temple until she found the One she was waiting for as “the redemption of Jerusalem” and Savior of all (v. 38).   The heart of Anna speaks of a heart that’s hungry for the Presence of God. She was always at the temple -- worshipping and watching and waiting. Hungering and thirsting for more of You with fasting, pressing in for more of You with persevering prayer. As You would later say, maybe even with Anna in mind, along with all who are never satisfied with settling for something less that all You have for them in their spiritual life, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). As the apostle Paul would later express, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). And as James, Your brother, would encourage us all, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8).   You drew near to Anna. You came to personally answer her prayers. She came to the temple to encounter You. And she did.   Lord, give me a deeper hunger for Your Presence. May I pray without ceasing down in my spirit, which is Your temple in my heart, where I can encounter You night and day (1 Corinthians 6:19). Even as I go about my day, I don’t have to depart from this temple or leave this place of the abiding Presence of God, where I can keep connected with You -- heart to Heart, spirit to Spirit, deep to Deep. Just as You promise, “Abide in Me, as I abide in you” (John 15:4). “You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 29:13-14). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Morning by Morning, January 2 - Living “In the Spirit” and Blessing by the Spirit Like Simeon   Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I behold You, You are changing me into Your image by Your Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18). ...   “Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the Law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said,   “‘Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your Salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.’   “And His father and his mother marveled at what was said about Him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, ‘Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed’” (Luke 2:25-35).   Even before the Day of Pentecost, Simeon was a man of God consumed by the Spirit of God. “The Holy Spirit was upon him” (v. 25). The Holy Spirit brought prophetic revelation to him of this coming encounter, as “it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit” (v. 26). And at just the right moment, in the fullness of time, “he came in the Spirit” to just the place of his long-awaited encounter (v. 27). And finally, the Holy Spirit moved in words of prophetic blessing over Mary and Joseph (v. 34).   What was the focus of all this activity of the Holy Spirit? Who was the focus? You were the focus. You are always the ultimate focus of the Holy Spirit. As You would later declare of the Holy Spirit, “He will glorify Me” (John 16:14).   Come, Holy Spirit. Fill me and lead me (Ephesians 5:18; Romans 8:14). Lead me to Jesus. Give me a hunger for the Presence and revelation of Jesus. Give me grace to wait upon You and Your timing, to be “in the Spirit” to be at just the right places at just the right times for the fulfillment of Your plans and purposes for my life through my encounters with You. Like Simeon, let my eyes see my Salvation and know Your peace. Then speak Your words of blessing through me into the hearts of those who need to hear Your encouragement and hope through their own encounters with Christ (2 Corinthians 14:3). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
