The Miracle of Hanukkah Fulfilled in the Messiah - December 7, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, December 7 - The Miracle of Hanukkah Fulfilled in the Messiah   Good morning, Lord Jesus. Light of the World, come light up my life this day and every day, for You have said for all eternity, “I AM the Light of the World. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the Light of Life” (John 8:12). ...   Last night at our New Wine Worship gathering on the First Wednesday of every month, a new friend of mine, Ze’ev Nevo, joined us in worship and prayer for revival in our hearts and our community. Ze’ev was born in Jerusalem and now leads a ministry of evangelism, especially for the Jewish people, called Israel Media Ministries. Speaking of this time of the Jewish celebration of Hannukah, also called the Feast of Dedication, the Festival of Lights, and the celebration of the Miracle of Lights, he spoke a word of blessing over us before we prayed over him on behalf of all the people in the land of Israel (Psalm 122:6).   As recorded in the Bible, You were there in Jerusalem during the days of this celebration in Israel: “Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple...” (John 10:22). Those at the temple that day questioned whether You were the Christ, the Messiah of Israel; and “(You) answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe” (v. 25).   They believed in the Miracle of Hanukah, the days when the oil miraculously burned in the temple that had been defiled by an occupying nation and cruel dictator upon its rededication in 164 BC, but they could not believe in You. They celebrated the days of deliverance when the Maccabees led the people like a savior to recapture Jerusalem and rededicate the temple, but they could not see and celebrate that their eternal Deliverer and Savior was there among them at the present. They remembered the ancient days of how the golden menorah was restored to the temple, where the oil of the lamp was to burn continually with sanctified oil (Exodus 27:20), but they could not see that the Light of the World, carrying in Your heart the eternal Oil of the Holy Spirit of the Living God, was standing and shining right there in their midst.   You had come to set them free from their spiritual oppression and open their eyes to see that You were the Light of their World. You replied to their question with the declaration of Your Deity: “I and My Father are One” (John 10:30).   You were the Prophetic Fulfillment of the very story and feast they were celebrating: “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the Light of Life’” (John 8:12).   Light of the World, shine in us with Your Light of Truth. You are the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father but through You (John 14:6). You are the Christ, the Messiah of Israel and of all the world. You are our Savior and our Deliverer (John 3:16).   Fill us with the Oil of Your Holy Spirit that will never burn out and will eternally shine with the Light of Your Glory (Romans 8:9). For now in Christ, our bodies are Your temple (1 Corinthians 6:19); and Your Spirit is the Light that shines through us into the darkness of our world (Matthew 5:14). The darkness of this world cannot overcome the Light of the Glory of God shining forth in You (John 1:5) and now shining through us--“Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).   Light of the World who steps into our darkness, I say this day, “Shine, Jesus, shine!” Shine in my heart and into the heart of every soul who needs Your Light and Your Love and Your Life--whether Jew or Gentile--throughout our world. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Morning by Morning, December 6 - Come, Let Us Worship and Bow Down and Listen for God’s Leading   Good morning, Lord Jesus. I come to You -- faithful, joyful, and triumphant -- all by Your grace, seeking Your face, to begin my day centered and hopeful in You. ...   “O come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice...” (Psalm 95:6-7).   To kneel before You is to humble myself before You. To worship and bow down is to acknowledge You as Lord, as God. To draw near to You in the posture of prayer in my heart and to listen for Your voice in my spirit is to welcome You into the moments of my day as my Shepherd, my Father, and my Best Friend.   And as I embrace Your Presence and accept Your invitation to hear Your voice this morning, what I hear in my heart, rising up into the thoughts in my mind is this:   “I AM your Security and Strength. I AM your Savior, your Healer, your Deliverer. I AM the Song in your spirit and the Hope in your heart. As You seek Me and trust Me, I go before you into your day aligning your heart with My purposes to display My glory, My love, and My power through your life. Do not worry. Do not fear. Do not let the troubles of this world overwhelm your soul, but trust in Me, keep your eyes on Me, keep your heart pursuing Me. And you will see Me move in ways you did not expect and make a way for My purposes in ways you had not known. I will display My glory despite what goes on in Your world.” ...   Yes, Lord. As I test what I believe I’m hearing in my heart against the authority of Your Word, the witness of my spirit, the character and the fruit of what I believe I’m hearing as I listen for Your voice, these Scriptures come to mind to confirm Your words:   “For not, for I am with you” (Isaiah 43:5).   “Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I AM God and there is no other!” (Isaiah 45:22)   “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27).   “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14).   “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33)   Thank You, Lord -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God -- for speaking to my spirit, for moving in my heart, for leading me in peace and joy, in confidence and trust, as I get up now from my place of prayer and go about my day in constant communion with Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. Prophetic Words of the Coming Word Made Flesh - December 5, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, December 5 - Prophetic Words of the Coming Word Made Flesh   Good morning, Lord Jesus. You’re with me always (Matthew 28:20). Let me always be aware of Your Presence with me and Your Spirit within me (Romans 8:9). ...   “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting” (Micah 5:2).   Seven hundred years before Your birth, the Prophet Micah wrote these words, declaring the place where Messiah would be born in Bethlehem of Judea. This is but one of the hundreds of prophecies written of You long before these Words of God were fulfilled in You. They are Words of hope, expectation, anticipation, and faith. And they are Words that make us stand in awe of You, even as we bow down in worship of You.   During this Christmas season, let Your Words of Scripture come alive afresh in my heart. As You explained to Your first disciples long ago, “all these things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me,” as You “opened their understanding that they might comprehend the Scriptures” (Luke 24:44-45).   Open my understanding, Lord Jesus. Stir in my spirit, Holy Spirit of God. Draw me near to hear Your voice and embrace Your Son, my heavenly Father. As I meditate on these prophetic Words of God, I bow down and worship the One who is the Word of God, for “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).   “O come, all ye faithful.” Let us behold the glory of God revealed in Jesus the Christ, the Word of God made Flesh, in this season and every season. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today. The Journey to Bethlehem in Our Hearts - December 4, 2023

 

Morning by Morning, December 4 - The Journey to Bethlehem in Our Hearts   Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your leading to begin my day pursuing Your Presence. ...   “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him” (Matthew 2:1-2).   Long before Christmas Day, the wise men from the East began their journey to Bethlehem. With their eyes, they saw a sign. With their hearts, they yearned to come find and worship the One who would be born King of the Jews. And not only King of the Jews, this One would also be revealed as King of Kings and Lord of Lords of all the heavens and all the earth (Matthew 28:18; Revelation 19:16).   In this season of the year we call “advent” -- named after the adventure of the journey to Bethlehem in anticipation of the coming of the Messiah, the Christ, who comes to rule and reign as King and Lord of our hearts -- I want to prepare my heart for Your coming.   I’m well aware of the history lessons and theological discussions of why “Christmas” is not really the time of the real birth of Jesus and just the co-opting of a pagan holiday with its imagery and mythology of trees and wreaths and angels, etc., etc., etc. I acknowledge the validity of the arguments. But I’m also well away of Your power to redeem all things--"redeeming the time” (Colossians 4:5), redeeming the curse (Galatians 3:13), redeeming us (Ephesians 1:7) -- and causing all things to work together for good according to Your plans and purposes (Romans 8:28).   Dubious origins or not, there’s no doubting this is a season when people are speaking of Jesus, looking to Jesus, celebrating Jesus, all around the world. So I join in the redemption of this time, this season of anticipation of Your coming, in the adventure of advent. Prepare my heart as I prepare You room, here in my life -- this day and every day, this season and every season. As they say, “Wise men still seek Him.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
