Volunteers on the Day of Battle - March 7, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, March 7 - Volunteers on the Day of Battle   Good morning, Lord Jesus. King of kings and Lord of lords, come rule and reign in my heart and every moment of my day. ...   “Your people shall be volunteers in the day of Your power; in the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth” (Psalm 110:3 NKJV).   I saw that over one hundred thousand Ukrainians from around the world have returned to fight for their homeland -- volunteers in the day of battle.   In some ways, the battle for the soul of Ukraine is a prophetic picture of the battle for the soul of the earth. At times the constant shelling of all we hold dear is unbearable, while the seemingly indiscriminate bombing of the innocent is unthinkable. At times the odds seem overwhelming and victory, or even a return to some form of peace, seems hopeless.   But Your Word encourages us: “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4 NKJV). And Your Words encourage us: “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).   Lord Jesus, we look to You--for the people of Ukraine and for ourselves as the children of God, called by Your name throughout the earth and chosen to live out our lives and our calling through these times. By the stirring of the Holy Spirit within us, we volunteer freely on the day of battle. And this is the day of battle--the day of battle for our souls and for the soul of the world.   After the witness of the courage of the Ukrainian people, give us Your courage to fight the battles before us--“strong and very courageous” (Joshua 1:7). Put Your weapons in our hands and Your words in our mouths, with Your Spirit stirring in our hearts. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).   Armed with Your spiritual weapons and clothed in Your spiritual armor, may we run to the battle and volunteer willingly to take our place and make our stand in You, just as Your Word commands:   “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.   Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints” (Ephesians 6:10-18). Crying Out to the God of Justice - March 4, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, March 4 - Crying Out to the God of Justice Good morning, Lord Jesus. Lead my heart, guide my steps -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, ‘In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my opponent.’ For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’ And the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to His chosen ones who cry to Him day and night? Will He delay long in helping them? I tell you, He will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?’” (Luke 18:1-8). I join my heart and my prayers with Your “chosen ones” who are crying out to You “day and night” for justice -- whether from tyrannical aggression in Kyiv or human trafficking in Houston, whether from silencing the voice of freedom in Ottawa or the murder of unborn children in their mothers’ wombs in New York. Even among those who are called by Your name, we may disagree about what is just and right and true. But to You, it is clear. To You, there is only one truth and only one right way. “Righteousness and truth are the foundation of Your throne” (Psalm 89:14). You are “the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17). You alone are righteous in all Your ways (Psalm 145:17). You alone are called “Faithful and True” and You alone are “called The Word of God” (Revelation 19:11-13). For You alone are “the Way and the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). So we seek You. We passionately pursue You. We implore You to put Your thoughts in our minds and Your desires in our hearts, so that Your ways become our ways and Your will becomes our will (Romans 8:29). And from that place of humility and prayer, as those who do fear God and seek to have respect for all people, we do cry out to You, God of justice, God of righteousness. O God, come and set things right -- here in our hearts and here in our world, here at home and to the ends of the earth.  Expose the “works of darkness” (Ephesians 5:11). Let the Light of Your glory push back the darkness, for the darkness cannot overcome the light (John 1:5). And by the grace of God, let Your light shine in us and shine through us and shine through our prayers in agreement with Your heart. “For once (we) were darkness, but now in the Lord (we) are light. (May we now) live as children of light--for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true” (Ephesians 5:8-9). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Overcoming Our Sufferings, Developing Our Character - March 3, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, March 3 - Overcoming Our Sufferings, Developing Our Character Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be at the Center of my heart, here at the beginning of my day. ... “Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” (Romans 5:1-5). Whether our cities are bombarded by a tyrant or our souls are bombarded by Satan, You don’t waste a moment of our sufferings. Though You don’t will evil and You don’t will sin, You will use it all to shape us into the character of Christ. For “suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character.” And it’s the character of Christ in our hearts that leads us to put all our hope and trust in You, our Father. As we open our hearts to You, You pour Your Holy Spirit into our hearts to continue shaping our character into the character of Christ. For that is Your goal and that is our prize -- to be conformed into the image of the Son of God -- not just through the blessings, but also through the sufferings. Through whatever sufferings we endure and whatever challenges we overcome on our journey through this broken and fallen world, full of broken and fallen people, You are making us more like You every day (Romans 8:29; 2 Corinthians 3:18; 1 John 4:17; 2 Peter 1:4).  There are many blessings to the one “who overcomes” by the power of Your grace at work within us (Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26, 3:5, 12, 21). “Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:5). For Your Word declares this promise and prize for all who overcome: “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he will be My son” (Revelation 21:7).  Lord, let it be so in me and all who are honored to be chosen to be alive and overcome through these days. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “Looking to Jesus” - March 2, 2022

 

Morning by Morning, March 2 - “Looking to Jesus” Good morning, Lord Jesus. You said Your sheep hear Your voice, that You know them and they follow You (John 10:27). I’m listening for Your voice to follow Your leading, as I seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ... “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2). When I’m feeling weary and worn from all that’s going on the world at large and also just the small world around my own life, Your Word reminds me to keep “looking to Jesus.” When I’m wondering if we’re in the prophetic fulfillment of the prophecies of Ezekiel or the unfolding days of Elijah, Your Word reminds me to keep “looking to Jesus.” When I’m seeking to discern the next right step, to walk only through the doors that only You can open and no man can shut, to hear the voice of one speaking behind me, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ Your Word reminds me to keep “looking to Jesus.” When I’m looking to You, my eyes are looking up and my heart is lifted up. When I’m looking to You, I’m seeking the things are above and beyond anything less in this world, as Your Word invites me: “So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:1-4). And when I’m looking to You, You are changing me into Your image; You are making me more like You every day, as Your Word promises: “And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18). “From glory to glory” (NKJV). So keep removing the veil from my face. Keep removing the distractions from my sight. By Your Spirit, keep moving in my heart to keep lifting my eyes to seek You, to keep “looking to Jesus.” May I learn from David’s prayers and psalms, expressing his heart to You as as a man after Your own heart: “As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness;     when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding Your likeness” (Psalm 17:15).  “‘Come,’ my heart says, ‘seek His face!’ Your face, Lord, do I seek” (Psalm 17:8). Yes, Lord. I lift up my eyes and my heart to You, as I begin my day seeking Your face, meditating on Your Word, “looking to Jesus.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
