Morning by Morning, January 4 - What is Good, What is Required Good morning, Lord Jesus. Where You lead me, I will follow -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). You’re a good God. And I want to be a good son. I know my salvation doesn’t depend on me being good or not, it depends upon my personal relationship with You (John 3:16). But when I’m in a personal relationship with You, I want to be good and I want to do good, like You. How do I do good? I “do justly.” I “love mercy.” And I “walk humbly with (my) God.” So increase my heart for justice. Increase my heart for mercy. As You do, I’ll need to know when it’s time to pursue justice or to pursue mercy in the challenges and choices before me. The way I will know is to walk humbly with You -- to realize I don’t know what to think, I don’t know what to do, I don’t even know how to pray apart from You, but I desperately need You to show me the way (Romans 8:26). I need You to put Your thoughts in my mind, Your desires in my heart, Your words in my mouth. Because apart from You, I can do nothing (John 15:5). By Your grace, I’m never apart from You (Matthew 28:20). Your Spirit fills me (Ephesians 5:18) and goes with me everywhere I go and into every moment of I make a choice (Romans 8:9). That’s how I know whether to “do justly” or “love mercy” -- moment by moment, choice by choice, step by step on my journey of “walking humbly with (my) God.” That’s how I can both “do justly” and “love mercy” at the same time, in the way only You can do. So do it in me. Do it through me, in every way You require of me, my good God. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
