When “The Time Came” - December 21, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, December 21 - When “The Time Came” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Savior of the world and Lord of my life, fill my heart with Your Spirit, as I wait upon You and Your leading to begin my day. ... “Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a Child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her Child” (Luke 2:4-6). When “the time came” for one of the most spiritually significant events of all eternity -- the birth of Christ -- Mary and Joseph were at a different place than they had been before. They were in a place called Nazareth, but when “the time came” for this dramatic day in their lives, they were in a new place called Bethlehem. And it was exactly the right place to be at exactly the right time to be there. Somehow in the mystery of the alignment of human free will and the divinely determined will of our sovereign God, all things aligned for the day of this event. The Emperor of Rome had ordered them to travel there to Bethlehem (v. 1). Mary and Joseph had chosen to travel there to Bethlehem (v. 5). And at the same time, the prophetic Word of God had foreseen and foretold over seven hundred years before that day that Bethlehem would be the exact place for this specific event when “the time came” for the birth of Christ: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for Me One who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times” (Micah 5:2). In the same way, I ask You to align my heart with Your heart, my days with Your days, my time with Your time, so that I’m at the right place at the right time for all You’ve purposed for my life when the time comes for every spiritually significant event of my life. In the mystery of Your sovereignty and my freedom, I ask You to line up what the government of the world is doing with what the government of heaven has decreed, as You guide me to make my choices along the way according to Your plan. When I look back on these days from the side of eternity to come, I pray I’ll be able to say -- like Mary and Joseph -- I was at the right place at the right time when “the time came.” In Jesus’ name I pray. “Good News of Great Joy!” - December 20, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, December 20 - “Good News of Great Joy!” Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and wait for Your leading, as I direct my thoughts and open my heart to begin my day embraced by my Father, abiding in the Son, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ... “Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see -- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord’” (Luke 2:9-11). You’re still our Good News of Great Joy! You were when You were born in the manger at Bethlehem 2,000 years ago and You are still are today when You’re born in every heart that embraces Your mercy and love as Savior, Messiah, and Lord. When we hear the Good News, we’re filled with great joy. And when we take hold of that Good News to make it our own and share it with the world in such desperate need of the peace and joy that only You can provide, You still release Your joy to the world through us. For by Your Spirit abiding in us, we are Your messengers of hope and carriers of joy as Your disciples and ambassadors. “We are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making His appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20). In the mystery of faith and mercy of grace, we are “the body of Christ and individually members of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27). “Christ in (us), the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27) -- Christ in us, sharing the hope and peace and love of God to bring joy to our world today, as Your Holy Spirit turns human hearts to You to embrace Your good news of great joy! When we pray the Lord’s prayer, that “Your Kingdom come” and “Your will be done,” we’re praying for more joy in our hearts and more joy on earth as it is in heaven. For You said, “the kingdom of God is within (us)” (Luke 17:21 KJV). And Your Word says, “the kingdom of God is ... righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). Come, Holy Spirit. Fill my heart with the Good News of Great Joy of Jesus  -- my Savior, Messiah, and Lord today. Let it bubble up and flow out of me everywhere You send me to bring more of Your joy to our world. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Joseph the Stepfather of Faith - December 17, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, December 17 - Joseph the Stepfather of Faith Good morning, Lord Jesus. Arise in my heart with Your Spirit as I seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ... “Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When His mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with Child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the Child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son, and you are to name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son,     and they shall name Him Emmanuel,’  which means, ‘God is with us.’  When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a Son; and he named Him Jesus” (Matthew 1:18-25). We don’t really hear that much about Joseph, maybe because he’s not mentioned again in Scripture after Your birth and early years. But he was a man of faith and obedience. He was a man of honor and character, compassion and mercy. He was a man with prophetic dreams and supernatural encounters, willing to make life-changing decisions based upon his faith in God and seeking to discern the will of God above his own. We think of Abraham as the father of faith (Romans 4:16). And maybe we should think of Joseph as the stepfather of faith. In a sense he was the stepfather of Jesus -- not the biological father because You were conceived by the Holy Spirit rather than by a human father, but entrusted to Joseph to “father” You as an expression and extension of Your heavenly Father. Like many men of these times, I’ve also been entrusted with the role of a stepfather, as well as my role as a natural father. And I pray that by the grace of God, I can “father” like Joseph as a man faith and obedience, honor and character, compassion and mercy, led by the Spirit to seek and obey the will of God for my life and to be a godly influence in the lives entrusted to me. I pray the same for each of us called to be an expression and extension of the Father heart of God in our world through these times. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! Jesus Messiah who Reigns Forever and Ever - December 15, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, December 15 - Jesus Messiah who Reigns Forever and Ever Good morning, Lord Jesus. My life is in Your hands; come live Your life through mine today (Colossians 3:4). ... “The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a Son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end’” (Luke 1:30-33). You shall reign forever and ever -- over the house of Jacob and here in my heart and the hearts of all who put their hope and faith in You. You are the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the Son of the Most High, who comes to set things right in our world as You set things right in our hearts. At Your first coming, You came as a Child -- conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary (Luke 1:35). At Your second coming, You’ll come as a King -- ruling and reigning forever and ever as “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” (Revelation 19:16). And right now, in between Your first coming and Your second coming, Your Holy Spirit moves on the hearts of all to turn to You, to open up our hearts to You, to surrender to You to rule and reign in our hearts, in our lives, and in our world. That Message declared from the beginning by Your first disciples has never changed: “Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, so that times of refreshing may come from the Presence of the Lord, and that He may send the Messiahappointed for you, that is, Jesus, who must remain in heaven until the time of universal restoration that God announced long ago through His holy prophets” (Acts 3:19-21). By the power of Your grace, I do repent; I do turn my heart to You and turn over my life to You. Rule and reign in me -- my Messiah, my King, my Lord and Savior -- now and forever and ever. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! The Favor of God is the Presence of God - December, 14, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, December 14 - The Favor of God is the Presence of God Good morning, Lord Jesus. You’re welcome here in my heart and every moment of my day. ... “In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you’” (Luke 1:26-28). The favor of God is the Presence of God. Favor doesn’t mean it always makes sense. Favor doesn’t mean it’s always going to easy. Favor doesn’t even mean that somehow we’ll have immunity from heart-breaking, soul-crushing experiences all along our journey through a broken and fallen world full of broken and fallen people. Just look at Mary’s life. She was suspected of adultery by her fiancé, rejected at the inn to give birth in a stable, whisked out of her country in the middle of the night to flee from a madman ruling an insane government killing innocent children, watched her son being wrongfully arrested, wickedly beaten, and cruelly nailed to a cross to suffer the most excruciating torture to death known to man. But through it all, she saw the most amazing miracles. She saw lives changed, hearts healed, and hope restored. She experienced resurrection joy, the coming of the kingdom of God in our midst, and the outpouring the Holy Spirit. With the favor of God upon her, she lived out her days with the Presence of God all around her -- finding security in her identity and fulfilling her destiny. Your favor was Your Presence for Mary. And Your favor is Your Presence for us. The favor of God for Mary was prophesied long before Your birth in Bethlehem: “Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). “They will call Him Immanuel which means ‘God with us’” (Matthew 1:23). Dear God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -- thank You for the favor of Your Presence. Thank You for being with us through all we encounter and endure on our own journeys through this broken and fallen world, where You’re at work in us and all that happens to us. You don’t waste a moment of our sufferings, as You make us more like You and teach us to love like You through it all (Romans 8:29; 1 John 4:17). You are our Favor. You are our Immanuel -- God with us. For the Favor of God is the Presence of God. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
