Mothers are More! - October 18, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, October 18 - Mothers are More! Good morning, Lord Jesus. Keep me grounded in Your Word and filled with Your Spirit, as I begin my day seeking Your face and listening for Your leading -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ... As God, You have no gender. You are neither male nor female. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). And in bringing human images to our human minds to try to grasp the Nature of our Spiritual God, Your Word uses imagery of a good father who would give good gifts to his children (Matthew 7:11) and of a loving mother who would gather her chicks under her wings for protection (Matthew 23:37). You’ve even described Yourself in Your Word as being “like a woman in childbirth” gasping and panting in the pangs of labor to give birth to Your purposes for Your people: “For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held Myself back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant…I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation…I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them” (Isaiah 42:14-16). So when I read of the denigration of motherhood in our culture, of the blurring of the God-given gender identity of women, I am repulsed in my spirit and sickened in my gut. For we are created “male and female” in the image of God. “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). In yet another barrage of assaults by a certain trend in our culture against the God-given identities of our genders, I was sickened again by the latest attack I just read on the honor and sanctity of the female image of mothers. Instead of “mothers,” they are referred to as “pregnant, lactating, and postpartum individuals” in the current “reconciliation package” being presented in our national government. Surely mothers are more. As soon as I read that in the news, my heart defiantly declared, “Mothers are more!” God help us. Come move in Your power. Come move in revival -- here in our hearts, here in our nation, before it’s too late. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Your righteousness is what we need and Your revival may be our only hope. So we are truly positioned for revival, if we would only turn to You in repentance and prayer. As Your Word declares in Your Covenant of Revival: “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14). As we turn to You in passion and prayer, come convict us again of our wicked ways. Come move again in our humble hearts. Come set things right again in our repentant land. Your response to repentance -- whether in our hearts or on behalf of our nation -- is always the same: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Come cleanse us and restore us in a great revival of Your righteousness, O God. In Jesus’ name I pray. Be encouraged today! Shaken But Not Stirred- October 15, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, October 15 - Shaken But Not Stirred Good morning, Lord Jesus. In the sovereign place of Your will and the certain embrace of Your love, I trust in You and rest in You, as I begin my day grounded in Your Word and filled with Your Spirit. ... “For the mountains may depart     and the hills be removed, but My steadfast love shall not depart from you,     and My covenant of peace shall not be removed,     says the Lord, who has compassion on you” (Isaiah 54:10) Out of the deep compassion of Your mercy and grace, Your “steadfast love” and Your “covenant of peace” will never falter and never fail. They’ll never depart and never be removed. Even when it feels like the mountains are shaken and the hills are trembling, You are our Steadfast Security, our Strong Tower of Certain Hope. If fact, we shouldn’t be surprised by the shakings and trembling of the world around us. Sometimes what we think is Satan is really our Savior -- shaking up what needs to be shaken up, exposing what needs to be lighted up, pruning away what needs to be cut off, carry away, and consumed in Your Holy Fire.  As Your Word reveals to us and warns us to prepare us for these very times:  “See that you do not refuse the One who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the One who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the One who warns from heaven! At that time His voice shook the earth; but now He has promised, ‘Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven.’ This phrase, ‘Yet once more,’ indicates the removal of what is shaken -- that is, created things -- so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a Consuming Fire!” (Hebrews 12:25-29) Come, Holy Consuming Fire of God! Come burn everything out of me that needs to be cut off and carried away and consumed. Come shake off of me everything that’s no longer to remain. As You’re doing it in the world and the times around me, do it in my heart and soul within me. For this “kingdom that cannot be shaken” is also a kingdom within me -- the territory and domain of my heart and life where You rule and reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. As You said, “The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21 KJV). “For the kingdom of God is ... righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). No doubt our spiritual enemy, “the thief (who) comes only to steal and kill and destroy,” is at work trying to stir things up (John 10:10a). But at the same time, our Savior and Sovereign Lord is at work shaking things up so that we “may have life, and have it abundantly” in Him alone (John 10:10b). So we’re shaken but not stirred, as we remain steady in Your love and confident in our faith. Lord, give me grace to endure the enemy’s stirrings and Your shakings -- without fear and full of faith. “For all the promises of God in (Jesus Christ) are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us” (2 Corinthians 1:20) So I’m eternally counting on Your Promise that eternally assures me Your steadfast love and Your covenant of peace will never depart and never be removed. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “Our Everyday, Ordinary Life -- Our Sleeping, Eating, Going-to-Work, and Walking-Around Life” - October 14, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, October 14 - “Our Everyday, Ordinary Life -- Our Sleeping, Eating, Going-to-Work, and Walking-Around Life” Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your leading, as I seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ... This morning You’re bringing to mind the calling of Romans 12:1 to “present (our) bodies to You as a living sacrifice” and how You then apply that to our calling as the “body of Christ” together -- each presenting the part we have, with each part being necessary to fully living into our calling and destiny as Your body in the earth: “For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another” (Romans 12:4). And now I’m seeing how powerfully this Word is freshly expressed and jumps off the page to come to life in The Message translation. This is the stirring in my spirit, as I take hold of Your Message in my heart today -- for me and my part in the body of Christ, and as I pray the same for every part joined with me and joined together in You: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life -- your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life -- and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for Him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. I’m speaking to you out of deep gratitude for all that God has given me, and especially as I have responsibilities in relation to you. Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what He does for us, not by what we are and what we do for Him. In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of His body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ’s body, let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t. If you preach, just preach God’s Message, nothing else; if you help, just help, don’t take over; if you teach, stick to your teaching; if you give encouraging guidance, be careful that you don’t get bossy; if you’re put in charge, don’t manipulate; if you’re called to give aid to people in distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond; if you work with the disadvantaged, don’t let yourself get irritated with them or depressed by them. Keep a smile on your face. Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle. Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality. Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down. Get along with each other; don’t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody. Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. ‘I’ll do the judging,’ says God. ‘I’ll take care of it. Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person lunch, or if he’s thirsty, get him a drink. Your generosity will surprise him with goodness. Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good” (Romans 12:1-21 The Message). Yes, Lord. That’s my prayer. Let it be so in me and in the body of Christ, as we present our lives, our body of Christ to You as a living sacrifice. Not just a “shallow, churchy, religiosity life” but our “everyday, ordinary life -- (our) sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “Listen to Him!” - October 13, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, October 13 - “Listen to Him!” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me hear Your voice and follow the leading of Your Spirit into the will and ways of My Father today, for Your sheep hear Your voice (John 10:27) and the children of God are led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14). ... This morning I’m reminded of the Mount of Transfiguration, when our Father spoke to Your disciples to listen to Your voice: “Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him. Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a Voice said, ‘This is My Son, the Beloved; with Him I am well pleased; listen to Him!’ When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Get up and do not be afraid.’ And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone” (Matthew 17:1-8). Father, Your words from heaven speak to my heart today: “Listen to Him!” (v. 5). Your heart has not changed. Your will has not changed. You still call the disciples of Jesus to listen to the Voice of Jesus. It was upon on a “high mountain” that they had their powerful, intimate encounter with You in every dimension of Your Being. They heard Your Voice from heaven (v. 5). They saw Jesus as the Beloved Son of God “transfigured” in His eternal glory before their eyes (v. 2). And I believe it was the “Bright Cloud” of Your Holy Spirit who “overshadowed them” to they could hear Your Voice and see Your Son in the Light of His glory (v. 5). You’re still calling us to come up to the “high mountain” of worship and prayer to encounter Your Presence in every dimension of Your Being. You’re still calling us to “Listen” to the Voice of Your Son, our Savior and our Shepherd, as we learn to hear His Voice to follow in Your ways. And You’re still overshadowing us and filling us with Your Holy Spirit in the deep and personal and intimate encounters with You in all Your glory. Yes, we may be “overcome by fear” in the holy, reverential fear of the Lord to be drawn so near to You and these expressions of Presence. But You overcome our fears, as You touch us in our hearts and lift us up in our spirits, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid” (v. 7). In this place, this “high mountain” of Your Presence, not only are You “transfigured” before us. But at the same time, we are “transformed” by You, as Your Word teaches us: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another (“from glory to glory” KJV); for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). Lord, I know You are speaking something very deep into my spirit about all this today. Give me grace to ponder this, to take hold of this, to live into this deep revelation of Your Word and Your ways that I sense You are imparting to me today. ... I’m drawn again to first Verse Your Spirit spoke to my spirit and brought up to my mind this morning from the “Red Letter” Words of Jesus: “My sheep hear My Voice. I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). Father, like You said those first disciples on that “high mountain” of both transfiguration and transformation, You’re still speaking to me and to every disciple of Jesus: “Listen to Him!” (v. 5) In both the fear of the Lord and the intimacy of the Lord, what rises up in my heart to say in response is “Yes, Lord. Yes, Father. I will seek to listen to Your Beloved Son, as I’m overcome and infused with Your Holy Spirit.” The thought comes to me just now -- I don’t have to build a dwelling for You on this “high mountain,” as Peter was thinking. I am the dwelling for You, as I abide in You and You abide in me (John 15:4). The “Spirit of God” who is “the Spirit of Christ” dwells in me (Romans 8:9), bearing witness with me that I am a child of God, a beloved son, in Christ, as Your Word reveals: “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ -- if, in fact, we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him” (Romans 8:14-17). This fresh revelation of these timeless truths is almost more that I can bear right now. But by Your grace, I will ponder these words and take them into my heart, seeking to keep my spirit in this “high mountain” of Your Presence abiding in me as I seek to keep abiding in You. In Jesus’ name pray. Amen. Be encouraged today! “Christ Will Shine on You!” - October 12, 2021

 

Morning by Morning, October 12 - “Christ Will Shine on You!” Good morning, Lord Jesus. Arise in my heart and shine through my life today. ... “Sleeper, awake!     Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:14). Lord, where I’m sleeping, wake me up. Where I’m experiencing dissipation or death in places in my heart and life that should be alive and thriving, breathe the Breath of Your Resurrection Power to bring me back to life and embrace the fullness of the life You have for me. Where I’m dull or dim or hidden away, let Light of Christ arise and shine upon me. I pray for awakening in the nation and in the nations of the earth. And I pray for awakening in me! In the name of Jesus, I renounce and rebuke every form of slumber, lethargy, and death. I renounce and rebuke everything that would try to cover me up or hide me away, to keep me out of Your timing, out of Your will, or out of Your ways. I renounce and rebuke all that would hold me back or weigh me down or trip me up from running the race You’ve set before me, looking to You, the Author and Finisher of my faith (Hebrews 12:1-2). Yes, these are dark days, just as Your Word said would come (Isaiah 60:1-3). And these are challenging times, just as You prophesied (Luke 21:7-28). But even in the darkness of the days -- even in the heaviness of the times, even when we’re tempted to hide away or go back to sleep until the nightmare of life in a broken, fallen world plunging into deeper darkness every day is finally over and we can wake up into a new day on the other side of eternity -- You call us to wake up, to rise up, and to shine! You even say, “(We) are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill (and) cannot be hidden” (Matthew 5:14). That can only be true because of You, because You are “the Light of the world” and “(the one) who follows (You) shall not walk in darkness, but have the Light of Life” shining within them and shining through them (John 8:12). That’s how You can even say that by Your mercy and grace, You’ll empower us to be “blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation in which (we) shine like stars in the world” (Philippians 2:15). So yes, Lord. Arise in me. Shine Your Light in me. Drive the darkness out of me. For in the Glory of Your Light, all darkness has to flee (James 4:7). “The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness (cannot) overcome It” (John 1:5). Forgive me, cleanse me, fill me with Your Light and Your Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). Fill me with Your Resurrection Power, as You arise and shine through me today and every day -- even on this side of eternity. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
