Morning by Morning, December 28 - Led by the Spirit “By Another Road”
Good morning, Lord Jesus. I’m listening for Your leading, as I wait to hear and seek to follow -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. ...
“And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, (the wise men) left for their own country by another road” (Matthew 2:12).
Thank You for all the ways You speak to us, all the ways You seek to communicate with us. Sometimes by the written Word of God, brought to life and applied to our lives by the Spirit of God. Sometimes by Your still, small voice in our hearts, rising up by Your thoughts in our minds. Sometimes by pictures, images, impressions, parables from the surroundings of our world around us. Sometimes by visions, trances, even by Your audible voice. And sometimes You speak “in a dream” like You did when You warned the wise men to go home “by another road.”
However, You choose to speak to us, whether to encourage us or correct us or warn us or just because You want to walk and talk in intimate relationship with us, You encourage us to listen. You said, “My sheep hear My voice. I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). Your Word says, “All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God” (Romans 8:14).
The wise men heard Your voice in a dream. We don’t know for certain their faith or religion or spiritual practices before they followed Your star to come and worship the new born “King of the Jews” (Matthew 2:2). They were known as “Magi from the east,” astrologers who sought the stars for knowledge and guidance (Matthew 2:1 NIV).
But we do know they came from afar -- whether merely far away from their own country or far away from their religious faith -- and they had a personal encounter with the Living God. They offered You the gifts of their treasure chests (v. 11). And they offered You the gifts of their worship and their hearts, as they “bowed down and worshipped (You)” (v. 11 NIV).
Then You offered them the gift of Your guidance, as You spoke to them in a dream. You saved their souls and You saved them from Herod (v. 12). And they went home “by another road” -- speaking as much of “another road” home to the East as it was “another road” home in their faith. Now they weren’t merely trusting in the stars to lead them, but trusting in the Living God.
Lord, You are the Living God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God. Speak to me. Lead me. Encourage me, correct me, warn me. But above all, help me learn to listen and embrace Your invitation to come walk and talk with You in intimate relationship with You -- wherever You lead, on whatever road, on my journey of faith. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
