Morning by Morning, December 29 - Prophetic Warnings for Our Protection and Provision
Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I draw near to You, You draw near to me -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God (James 4:8). ...
“Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the Child, to destroy Him.’ Then Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have called My Son’” (Matthew 2:13-15).
Just as You spoke to the wise men through a dream, You spoke to Joseph through a dream. To both, You warned them of the plans of the kingdom of darkness so that they could fulfil the plans of the kingdom of God.
When Herod sought to destroy this Child just born from His mother, I think of another prophetic warning recorded in Scripture that speaks of a warning from the plans of darkness and the provision of God:
“A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pangs, in the agony of giving birth. Then another portent appeared in heaven: a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a Child, so that He might devour her Child as soon as it was born. And she gave birth to a Son, a male Child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. But her Child was snatched away and taken to God and to His throne; and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, so that there she can be nourished for one thousand two hundred sixty days” (Revelation 12:1-6).
I know the pictures and prophecies and parallel Scriptures of Your Word speak in many different layers of fulfillment. And in so many of these, we see the plans of the enemy revealed and thwarted, as the plans of God are fulfilled despite great opposition. “When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him” (Isaiah 59:19 NKJV).
A further prophetic parallel declares this warning and this rescue of the Child just born as well:
“So when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male Child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle, so that she could fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her place where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. Then from his mouth the serpent poured water like a river after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood. But the earth came to the help of the woman; it opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth. Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her children, those who keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus” (Revelation 12:13-17).
Thank You for Your revelation of both the plans of the enemy and the plans of God. Thank You that “When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him” (Isaiah 59:19 NKJV).
In a sense, we are “the rest of her children, those who keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus” in the face of our spiritual opposition and in the fulfillment of Your plans for our lives. And just as Herod sought to destroy the Child and the spiritual enemy of our souls seeks to destroy us and the plans of God for our lives, You rescue us and provide for us.
Sometimes You send a dream of prophetic warning. Sometimes You send an angel. Sometimes You send someone who will gather us up like Joseph gathered up Mary and her Child or the great eagle gathered up the newborn Child from the pursuing serpent. Sometimes You send the earth itself to open up and swallow up the floods and rivers of destruction coming at us.
But no matter what comes at us, You are always with us (Matthew 28:20). You will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). “When the enemy comes in like a flood, (You) will lift up a standard against him” (Isaiah 59:19). Praise You, Lord! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
