Holy Fire Fall! - March 26, 2021

Morning by Morning, March 26 - Holy Fire Fall!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. As I draw near to You, You draw near to me -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit of God (James 4:8). As I open my heart to You, let Your Holy Fire fall in me. ...

I’ve been given the opportunity to speak into the hearts of some men this weekend at their yearly retreat, just getting away with God and with one another, where “iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17). And with the eyes of my heart, I see an image of a fiery forge that forms a sword for its purpose in the fire. But the emphasis in my spirit is not on the sword as much as it is on the fire. And this Word comes to mind:

"So Ahab sent to all the Israelites, and assembled the prophets at Mount Carmel. Elijah then came near to all the people, and said, 'How long will you go limping with two different opinions? ... Let two bulls be given to us; let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it; I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. Then you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the Lord; the God who answers by fire is indeed God.' All the people answered, 'Well spoken!' ... As midday passed, (the prophets of Baal) raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice, no answer, and no response.... At the time of the offering of the oblation, the prophet Elijah came near and said, 'O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel, that I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your bidding. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so that this people may know that You, O Lord, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back!' Then the Fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and even licked up the water that was in the trench. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, 'The Lord indeed is God! The Lord indeed is God!'" (1 Kings 18:20-39)

Holy Fire, fall on us! Fall on Your sons and daughters who are pursuing Your Presence. Give us courage and determination to fully surrender our lives as a living sacrifice to You (Romans 12:1).

Let us not be limping between the ways of this world and the Word of God, between the gods of this age and the God of the Word. Let us not be compromising or complacent, double-minded or doubting to question the authority of Your Word or wavering about the power of Your Spirit. Let us never settle for the false “gods” and empty “promises” of powerless “faith.” May we pursue You -- the Living God “who answers by Fire!”

Come, Holy Spirit! Come, consume our offering in the Fire of Your Spirit with Your Presence and Your power! (Acts 1:4-8)

Come like “a refiner’s fire!” (Malachi 3:2) Burn out of us all that is not yet like You. Purify us and sanctify us --wholly, completely, entirely-- in our “spirit and soul and body,” that we may be sound and blameless at the coming of my Lord Jesus Christ! (1 Thessalonians 5:23) "For indeed our God is a consuming Fire! (Hebrews 12:29)

You indeed are God! You indeed are God! You are the God who answers by Fire! Let Your Holy Fire fall! Fall on us and everything around us! Keep on consuming us so that the Fire down in our soul is forever fanned into flame and never burns out! (2 Timothy 1:6; Leviticus 6:12; Matthew 25:1-13) In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Coming Up to the Mountain of God’s Presence Every Morning - March 24, 2021

Morning by Morning, March 24 - Coming Up to the Mountain of God’s Presence Every Morning

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Put Your thoughts in my mind, Your desires in my heart, and Your words in my mouth, as I seek to be more like You today. ...

“When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. Then He began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven....” (Matthew 5:1-3).

You began to speak and teach when Your disciples followed You up to the mountain to come sit in Your Presence to listen for Your voice.

These first moments of my morning are my mountain-top encounters with You, Lord Jesus. I come up here with You. And I welcome the Presence of Your Spirit down here in my spirit in the communion of prayer, in the intimacy of worship, as I abide in You and You abide in me (John 15:4).

You speak to my spirit. You teach me Your truth and lead me in Your ways. You reinforce the bond of love and trust, as You rekindle the flame that never goes out and consumes my soul.

It doesn’t matter where I am physically -- a few days ago I was in a little upper loft of a pastor’s home in Kentucky; this morning I’m tucked away in a friend’s sculpting studio over in the hill country of Texas. What matters is where I am spiritually -- seeking Your face, listening for Your voice, embracing Your Spirit, as I come up here to the mountain of Your Presence -- spirit to Spirit, heart to Heart, deep to Deep. Every morning You fulfill Your Word, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8).

Then what begins in these first moments of my morning continues on throughout the moments of my day. Step by step, moment by moment, You guide my heart and direct my paths along this adventure of faith for another day. And it all begins when I first take a little time to come up here to the mountain with You.

“O God, You are my God; early will I seek You” (Psalm 63:1). “My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up” (Psalm 5:3). “Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life.... Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; may Your good Spirit lead me on level ground” (Psalm 143:8-10). Your “steadfast love” never ceases and the tender mercies of Your ever-abiding Presence are “new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

“Spring Forth!” into the Spring Time of the Spirit - March 22, 2021

Morning by Morning, March 22 - “Spring Forth!” into the Spring Time of the Spirit

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me hear Your voice and be led by Your Spirit as I begin my day centered in You. ...

“Do not remember the former things,
or consider the things of old.
I am about to do a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
    and rivers in the desert.
The wild animals will honor Me,
    the jackals and the ostriches;
for I give water in the wilderness,
    rivers in the desert,
to give drink to My chosen people,
the people whom I formed for Myself
so that they might declare My praise” (Isaiah 43:18-21).

We’ve entered the Spring of the year. And I hear in my heart it’s time to “spring forth!”

You’re the God who makes “a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Through many disappointments from unfilled dreams this past year, through much discouragement from dashed hopes this past year, through all the ups and down, the shut downs and the pressures to shut up this past year, may are battle-weary and faith-drained. But that’s just the kind of desperation of spirit where You love to display Your glory to refill us with faith and infuse us with hope.

Just as You spoke Your words of faith and hope to those who were weary and desperately in need of a Savior so long ago, You still speak Your words of Spirit and Life today:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:3-11).

Come, Holy Spirit. Give us eyes to see the Spring Time of the Spirit at hand! Fill us afresh with faith and hope, to dare to believe again -- unwilling to stay stuck in disappointment, unrelenting in our pursuit to take hold of the hope You’re stirring again in our hearts. By the power of Your grace moving in us, we will “spring forth” as You make a way in our wilderness and burst forth with a flowing river of Your Spirit out of our desert! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

In It to Win It! - March 19, 2021

Morning by Morning, March 19 - In It to Win It!

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Help me hear what You’re saying and go where You’re leading, as I seek to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with the Holy Spirit. ...

“Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives a prize? Run in such a way that you may win it” (1 Corinthians 9:24).

We’re in a spiritual race. We’re in a spiritual war. But whether we’re running our race or fighting our war, we’re in it to win it!

And we win it when we’ve allowed You to make us like You. We’re in this world to be “conformed” into the image of the Son of God (Romans 8:29). As You are so are we to be in this world (1 John 4:17). As we behold You -- in worship, trust, and surrender of every area of our lives -- You are changing us, transforming us, by Your Spirit into Your image “from glory to glory” (1 Corinthians 3:17-18). We’re learning to love and becoming like the One who is Love (1 John 4:8).

We’re running this race “looking the Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1-2). We’re fighting this war in the battlefield of our souls and on the frontlines of the war of good and evil, truth and lies, right and wrong following “the Commander of the army of the Lord” (Joshua 5:14).

By the power of Your grace, I’m in it to win it! As the Apostle Paul expressed in the midst of his running his race and fighting his battles:

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do:  Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12-14).

Through the victory of the cross, You’ve already won this race and this war in victory for me (Colossians 2:13-15). And now, by the power of Your grace at work within me, may I take hold of all You’ve done as You keeping taking hold of all I am. I’m in it to win it because You’ve already won it for me! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

Stimulus Gift - March 17, 2021

Morning by Morning, March 17 - Stimulus Gift

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Fill me with Your Spirit and make me more like You today. ...

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

Our “stimulus check” hit our bank account this morning. It said it came from the US Treasury, but You are the ultimate Source of every good gift. So I give You the thanksgiving and praise.

And since all I have and all I am already belongs to You, I pray You’d stimulate the economy of heaven and advance the kingdom of God with every good gift You’ve ever poured into me. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s grace” (1 Peter 4:10).

Lord, let souls be saved. Let lives be changed. Let the Good News of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God be proclaimed with power and authority in the mighty name of Jesus to the ends of the earth. “For by grace (we) have been saved through faith, and that not of (ourselves); it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).

Thank You for Your good gifts. And thank You for the greatest Gift of all -- my salvation through faith in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As You stimulate a stirring revival and great awakening in our world, let every heart be open wide to receive Your great Gift. And let every good gift You’ve given me be a part of the great move of Your Spirit in our days. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

My friend, may you embrace and share the great Gift of your salvation through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in Jesus' name. Please pray the same for me. God bless you!

“Come. Follow Me.” - March 16, 2021

Morning by Morning, March 16 - “Come. Follow Me.”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name and listen for Your voice, for Your sheep hear Your voice and Your disciples follow Your leading. ...

As I wait and watch with the eyes of my heart and the ears of my spirit, I sense You saying, “Come. Follow Me.” ...

Yes, Lord. This Word comes to mind: “Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow Me” (Mark 10:21).

To come and follow You means to quit following the lesser things that take up our time and our treasure. To come and follow You means there’s a shifting in our priorities and a renewed focus of our perspectives. There’s a realignment of our realities and a redistribution of our resources. And at the heart of it is all is a change in our heart to direct our first love to the One who first loved us.

I’ve heard Your “Come. Follow Me.” before. I was a trial lawyer and You called me to a full time focus of ministry. I was in Texas and You called me prepare for ministry in Kentucky. I was in ministry in Kentucky and You called me to come back home to Texas. And so many other places in my heart, in my thinking, in my understanding of who I am in light of Who You are, where You’ve continued to call me every step of the way, “Come. Follow Me.” I’ve not always heard You clearly, but I can say I’ve always loved You dearly. And I thank Your loving me so dearly to keep forgiving me, teaching me, and leading me on this adventure of a lifetime.

So, Here I am, Lord. Ready to come and follow You, wherever You lead. Everything’s always an adventure of faith with You!

A friend was telling me just the other day that Your word is a lamp to our feet and not a spotlight. Most of the time, it’s just enough light of revelation to see the next step, not the whole journey or even much of the path just up ahead. Maybe we’d find it harder to go if we really knew what all is set before us. Maybe that’s why we walk by faith and not by sight on this journey with You.

But I’ve learned this much along the way and every day of trying my best by the power of Your grace to “Come. Follow You.” It’s way better to trust in Your wisdom than my wisdom, Your ways than my ways, Your plans than my plans. For Your ways are higher than my ways and Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). For Your plans for me always good and full hope for my future (Jeremiah 29:11). And it’s way better to trust in the One who sees the end from the beginning and the beginning from the end, instead of trying to trust in the self-centered, self-limiting, and so often self-defeating plans of one who can only see in a mirror dimly on this side of eternity (Isaiah 46:10; 1 Corinthians 13:12).

A fool trusts in his own way, but a wise person gets off his rear and gets his gear to get up and go without looking back when he hears the Master say, “Come. Follow Me.” Maybe that’s not quite a Proverb, but it sure is the truth.

So I can tell You’re up to something. Some say another one of Your names is “Jehova Sneaky.” But I’ve read Your Book and taken a look at Your sneak previews of things to come, so I say, “I’m all in. I’m all Yours. Where else would I go? I have decided to follow You. No turning back. I’m answering Your call, whatever it is, to Come. Follow You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Be encouraged today! In the Love of Jesus, Tommy Hays

“Living Menorahs” Worshipping God - March 15, 2021

Morning by Morning, March 15 - “Living Menorahs” Worshipping God

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I lift up my face and open up my heart to seek You and embrace You to begin my day embraced by my Father, centered in Christ, and filled with Your Holy Spirit. ...

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, ‘Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.

Then I turned to see Whose voice it was that spoke to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands I saw One like the Son of Man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash across His chest. His head and His hair were white as white wool, white as snow; His eyes were like a flame of fire, His feet were like burnished bronze, refined as in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. In His right hand He held seven stars, and from His mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining with full force” (Revelation 1:10-16).

We were worshipping together at a home group gathering at a friend’s house last night, where the only agenda was to have no agenda but to watch and wait for the leading of the Lord. We wound up in a circle around the living room, with faces and hands lifted up as we sang and prayed and embraced the deep presence of Your Spirit. And a vision came to my heart with this Word from the Book of Revelation.

In the vision in my heart, we were the “lampstands.” With our faces and arms and palms of our hands lifted up in worship, we were like living menorahs -- the lampstand of gold in the inner court of the tabernacle with seven lamps burning with fire from the oil. Our faces were the center lamp and our arms were the branches, lifted up and burning with a fiery passion for You from the Oil of the Holy Spirit rising up within us.

And You were standing in the midst of us. ...

What a picture of Your Presence. Just as You said: “Where two or three are gathered in My name, I AM there among them” (Matthew 18:20). “Abide in Me as I abide in you.... I AM the Vine, you are the branches” (John 15:4).

At a time when some bubbled up with expressions of joy, this Word of confirmation from Your Scripture came to mind: “Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body rests secure.... You show me the path of life. In Your Presence there is fullness of joy; in Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:9-11).

Thank You for the intimacy and the joy of Your Presence, as welcome we You into our homes and our hearts. Thank You for standing in the midst of us, speaking to us like the sound of many waters in all the different ways You communicate Your abiding Presence with us.

As Your Word encourages us to pursue Your Presence: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). “Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His Presence continually” (1 Chronicles 16:11). “You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness -- (for the One Who is our righteousness) -- for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). And Your never-changing reply from Your steadfast love, “I AM with you always” (Matthew 28:20). In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
