Morning by Morning, August 11 - Freed from Our “Lack of Faith” and Filled with the Power of God’s Holy Spirit Good morning, Lord Jesus. I look to You and listen for Your leading, as I seek to begin my day as a faithful disciple and follower of Christ. … “Later (Jesus) appeared to the eleven themselves as they were sitting at the table, and He upbraided them for their lack of faith and stubbornness, because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen. And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the Good News to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using My name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” “So then the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and proclaimed the Good News everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the Message by the signs that accompanied it” (Mark 16:14-20). I’ve read this Passage of Your Word many times. By Mark’s account this Passage expresses Your final instructions to Your first disciples before You ascended back to Heaven. But what strikes me this morning is how this short Passage of Scripture begins with Your criticism of the disciples lack of faith but immediately turns to Your commission of these same disciples to go forth full of power. In one breath, You “upbraided them for their lack of the faith and stubbornness” and in the very next breath of the very next sentence of Scripture, You commanded them to “Go into all the world and proclaim the Good News to the whole creation.” And You assured them signs and wonders of God would accompany them. Today, what I hear from Your Word is that Your answer to our doubts and unbelief is to step out in faith despite our doubts and unbelief. As we “Go” in obedience, You build up our faith and break off our doubts. What changed in them? What made the shift in them from “their lack of faith” to their experience of “signs” of Your power that would “accompany those who believe”? Each of Your Gospel writers, Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John tell us in Your Word. It’s not their great faith, but Your great grace. It’s not their mere power of their own human spirits, but the mighty power of Your Holy Spirit. That’s what would make all the difference. Your Holy Spirit abiding within them, coming upon them, setting them free from doubt and unbelief and setting them on fire with the authority and power of Your name. That’s what would make all the difference! That’s Who would make all the difference! (Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 24:49; John 21:22; Acts 1:8) Send me forth today, Lord. Fill me up afresh with Your Holy Spirit, just as the Word of Your Scripture commands every disciple and follower of Christ: “Be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Break off my doubts; set me free from my “lack of faith.” Fill me up and send me forth in the power of Your Spirit — the power of Your name to proclaim Your Good News “everywhere” by both Your Word and Your Spirit confirming Your Scripture and fulfilling Your Commission, just as You said. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Be encouraged today!
